Riot Fest 2017 - Friday
Death From Above at Riot Fest 2017 (more by Aaron Peipert)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Death From Above, The Beaches @ Brooklyn Steel
Death From Above (who dropped the “1979” from their name) took a decade to release a sophomore album, 2014’s The Physical World, but much less time for a third, Outrage! Is Now, which came out earlier this year. The bass/drums/vocals sound they perfected on their now-classic debut You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine remains on their newer albums, and the live shows are still as aggressive-yet-danceable as you’d expect.

King Krule, Show Me The Body @ Warsaw
Having just released his terrific second album, The Ooze, Archy Marshall brings King Krule’s jazzy, dubby, trip-hop-y sound to Brooklyn.

Mild High Club, Anemone @ Mercury Lounge
Jazzy and chill, Mild High Club’s sound is somewhere between between Steely Dan and the Beach Boys. This is their first of two shows with Montreal’s Anemone.

Lee “Scratch” Perry + Subatomic Sound System (live), François K @ Output
Dub icon Lee “Scratch” Perry has been working with Subatomic Sound System for a while now and they’ve just collaborated on a new version of Perry’s classic album Super Ape. This is one of the first shows with Output’s new live performance setup.

This Is The Kit, Helena Deland @ Mercury Lounge
British folk rock group This Is The Kit returned this year with their new album Moonshine Freeze. Like past albums, it features contributions from The National’s Aaron Dessner, and TITK have been touring (and collaborating on stage) with The National this year too. Tonight they’re in NYC for a headlining show, with support from Montreal’s Helena Deland.

Pujol, Pink Mexico, White Rope @ Alphaville
While Daniel Pujol is best known as a maker of spirited garage rock, he just released a spoken word album, Political Errors @TheEndOfThe20thCentury, so be prepared for music and prose tonight.

Yumi Zouma, She-Devils, Blood Cultures @ Le Poisson Rouge
New Zealand’s Yumi Zouma make indiepop with a delicate touch but that never feels like it might blow away on the breeze. If you’re going to tonight’s show, Montreal duo She-Devils are worth showing up early to see.

Grooms, Patio, Russian Baths @ Brooklyn Bazaar
Grooms’ new album Exit Index is a further refinement of their 2014 album Comb the Feelings Through Your Hair’s style: sleek, dark, alien. They used to get compared to Sonic Youth but these days Broadcast is probably more apt. They celebrate the new album tonight.

Brutal Measures (Lydia Lunch & Weasel Walter), Joe Coleman, Michael Foster @ Berlin
No wave legend Lydia Lunch and frequent collaborator Weasel Walter released a 20-minute composition of spoken word, harsh-sounding electronics and frantic drumming last year called Brutal Measures. Tonight, they bring that project to the stage.

Hauschka, Paul de Jong (of The Books) @ Murrmr Theatre
German experimental composer and “prepared piano” player Hauschka (aka Volker Bertelmann) returned this year with his new album What If, which introduces synthesizers and a player piano to his sound. Tonight he plays NYC, and it’s a great double bill with Paul de Jong of The Books.

The Atomic Bitchwax, Mirror Queen, Biblical, Barbed Wire @ Knitting Factory
Trusty stoner rock label Tee Pee Records throws a showcase at Knitting Factory tonight, headlined by long-running NJ band The Atomic Bitchwax, whose sixth album Gravitron came out on Tee Pee in 2015.

Man Forever, Mourning A BLKstar, True Dreams @ Secret Project Robot
Man Forever — the solo project of John Colpitts (aka Kid Millions), who drums in Oneida — returned this year with Play What They Want (on Thrill Jockey), which features contributions from members of Yo La Tengo, Laurie Anderson, and Mary Lattimore. Tonight he graces his hometown with a show at Secret Project Robot.

Willie Watson, Colter Wall, Suzanne Santo @ Rough Trade
Country singers Willie Watson and Colter Wall released new albums this year, Folksinger, Vol. 2 and Colter Wall, respectively (Colter’s was produced by go-to country guy Dave Cobb, who works with Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton, etc). They’re on a co-headlining tour that hits Rough Trade tonight and Mercury Lounge tomorrow.

Ricky Gervais @ The Theater at Madison Square Garden
Comedian, outspoken atheist, and controversial awards show host Ricky Gervais brings his “Humanity” tour back to NYC for one more big show.

2 Dope Queens @ Kings Theatre
Comedians Jessica Williams (The Daily Show) and Phoebe Robinson (Broad City) are bringing their WNYC podcast 2 Dope Queens to HBO, and are taping episodes at Kings this week.

Springsteen on Broadway
It’s the hottest ticket on Broadway: Bruce Springsteen playing solo at the intimate Walter Kerr Theatre, performing some of his biggest hits and telling stories about them. His show runs through February.
