What’s going on Wednesday?

Action Bronson at The Meadows
Action Bronson at The Meadows 2017 (more by Sachyn Mital)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Action Bronson, Trash Talk, Mayhem Lauren @ Terminal 5
Queens rap staples Action Bronson and Meyhem Lauren have been collaborators for years. This year, they both released worthy new albums that feature each other. Now they’re also on tour together. Hardcore band Trash Talk, who are no stranger to playing on rap shows, make this an excellent triple bill.

The Life and Times, Sweet Cobra, Ageist @ Saint Vitus
Two great post-hardcore bands, Shiner offshoot The Life and Times and Sweet Cobra, are playing a few shows together this month, including Vitus tonight.

Trash Talk, Onyx Collective @ Saint Vitus (late show)
Later at Vitus, hardcore maniacs Trash Talk will play a free show after they open for Action Bronson at the much larger Terminal 5. RSVP is required.

Chris Rock @ Theater at MSG
Chris Rock has been in the midst of a comeback year, which has recorded his ongoing first tour in nine years. He played two BAM shows recently, where he taped a forthcoming Netflix special, and tonight he begins another NYC run. This is the first of three consecutive shows at the Theatre at MSG, and then he plays Barclays Center on 12/9.

Cass McCombs, Doug Shaw @ Union Pool
Cass McCombs had a very busy 2016 that included the release of his latest solo album Mangy Love, an album with his band The Skiffle Players, and contibutions to the Grateful Dead tribute album on 4AD. He’s been quieter this year, but tonight he plays this intimate one-off that he announced last week. It’s unsurprisingly sold out.

“Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas – In Concert – Live To Film” @ Barclays Center
Tim Burton‘s classic holiday film The Nightmare Before Christmas comes to Brooklyn as a live-to-film concert event. Danny Elfman, who wrote the songs and score and was the singing voice of Jack Skellington, will sing live, as will original voice actors Catherine O’Hara (Sally) and Ken Page (Oogie Boogie). They’ll be backed by a full orchestra and choir during a screening of the movie.

Home Blitz, The Love-Birds, RIPS @ Alphaville
San Francisco’s The Love-Birds make the kind of fuzzy, hook-filled indie rock that was all over college radio in the mid-’90s: think Teenage Fanclub’s sense of melody with Pavement’s sense of tuning. Their debut album will be out next year via Trouble in Mind. The other two bands on this bill fit right in and are both worth catching.

Delicate Steve, James Chance & The Contortions, Roya, Gemma @ Elsewhere
Guitar-slinger Delicate Steve kicks off a short tour tonight as part of a very disparate lineup that includes No Wave icon James Chance, indie rock band Roya and more.

The Messthetics, Royal Arctic Institute, Amy Bezunartea @ Monty Hall
The Messthetics are a new instrumental trio featuring Brendan Canty and Joe Lally, who you may also know as Fugazi’s rhythm section. The band are rounded out by experimental/jazz guitarist Anthony Pirog who has played with Henry Kaiser, Elliot Sharp, Mary Halvorson, as well as in groups. Tonight’s show is with  The Royal Arctic Institute — another instrumental trio which features former members of Phantom Tollbooth, Das Damen, Roky Erickson’s backing band, and more.

Tanya Tagaq @ National Sawdust
Part of National Sawdust’s “Winterreise Nights” series, the Polaris Prize winner and Inouk throat-singer Tanya Tagaq teams with  Jeffrey Zeigler and other musicians to perform a live score for film We Breathe Again (which premiered on PBS’s “America Reframed”).

The-Dream, Bria Jhane @ Gramercy Theatre
R&B singer and in-demand songwriter The-Dream returned over the summer with the “Summer Body” single featuring Fabolous, and recently he’s been celebrating the 10th anniversary of his 2007 debut Love Hate at live shows.

Chad VanGaalen, Un Blonde @ Rough Trade
The consistently great indie singer/songwriter Chad VanGaalen returned this year with Light Information (on Sub Pop), which is as instantly enjoyable as Chad always is. Opening tonight is recent ANTI- signees Un Blonde.

Bill Nace/Daniel Carter/Samara Lubelski, Utter Nots, Crammm @ The Glove
Headlining this show is a trio set from three staples of experimental music, Bill Nace, Daniel Carter, and Samara Lubelski (all three of whom have previously worked with members of Sonic Youth).

Springsteen on Broadway
The Boss is currently in the midst of his completely sold-out “Springsteen on Broadway” run at the Walter Kerr Theatre, which has now been extended through June! At these shows, Bruce plans to give fans shows “that are as personal and as intimate as possible.”

Cindy Wilson (of The B-52’s), Kaki King, Amy Rigby and more @ The Bell House
A great lineup comes together for this benefit for Planned Parenthood.

Bridget Everett @ Joe’s Pub
With an Amazon pilot that will hopefully become a series, Bridget Everette could soon be a lot more well-known, so don’t miss a chance to catch her unexpurgated live show with backing band The Tender Moments.
