Having returned to the East River (where it belongs) in 2016, Macy’s annual Independence Day fireworks extravaganza will do the same for 2017, happening Tuesday, July 4 around 9 PM. The light show launches from five barges stationed along the East River between E. 24th St and East 41st St. You’ll be able to see the display anywhere with an unobstructed view of the sky, but there are five official viewing areas:

  • 42nd Street & FDR Drive
  • 34th Street & FDR Drive
  • 23rd Street & FDR Drive
  • 16th Street & Avenue C (ADA/special needs viewing area)
  • Houston Street & FDR Drive

You can also pay for prime fireworks real estate, like from the top of 1 WTC, though a friend’s roof is always a good option to investigate. The fireworks will also be aired live on NBC, which will feature performances by Brad Paisley, Hailee Steinfeld, and Lady Antebellum. That telecast starts at 8 PM Eastern.

Coney Island has its own Fourth of July fireworks as well, which is always a fun place to spend the holiday. Jersey City has fireworks too.
