Winter Jazzfest is approaching — it happens January 4-12 at various NYC venues including Bowery Ballroom, Le Poisson Rouge, The Bitter End, SOB’s. Mercury Lounge, Public Arts, Nublu, Subculture, and more — and the schedules for the two and a half marathons are out, along with some lineup additions. (There’s a “half marathon” on Saturday, January 5, along with the regular two-day marathon on Friday, January 11 and Saturday, January 12.)

The big shows happen at Bowery Ballroom, with Seun Kuti & Egypt 80, ÌFÉ. Meshell Ndegeocello & Jeff Parker’s ‘The Music of Brooklyn,’ Makaya McCraven, Ezra Collective, and DJ Joe Clausell hitting that venue on 1/11.

On 1/12, Bowery Ballroom hosts Robert Glasper Experiment drummer Chris Dave’s jazz/hip hop band Chris Dave and the Drumhedz. That show features The Roots’ James Poyser playing with special guest Bilal, drummer Justin Brown (who’s played with Thundercat, Ambrose Akinmusire, and others) with his band NYEUSI and special guest Georgia Anne Muldrow (who recently released a great new album), a Roy Hargrove tribute, Blaque Dynamite & The Murder Angels, and DJ Stutzmcgee.

Other highlights of the marathons include Meshell Ndegeocello at LPR on 1/5; Kassa Overall BLUESWAMINI at Nublu on 1/5; Mary Halvorson Code Girl at The Sheen Center on 1/11; Marcus Strickland’s Twi-Life, Brandon Coleman, and more at Mercury Lounge on 1/11; Fugazi offshoot The Messthetics at SoHo Playhouse on 1/11; Vijay Iyer & Craig Taborn at LPR on 1/12; Nubya Garcia at SOB’s on 1/12; Impressions of Pepper Round Robin feat. Makaya McCraven, Keyon Harrold, Brandee younger, JD Allen, Liberty Ellman, Nate Wood, and more at The Sheen Center on 1/12; Kassa Overall Trio feat Mark Shim at Subculture on 1/12; Now vs Now, Butcher Brown, Takuya Kuroda, Kandace Springs and Tawiah at Mercury Lounge on 1/12; Nellie McKay at Public Arts on 1/12; and more.

Winter Jazzfest will also include shows from Pharoah Sanders, Marc Ribot’s Songs of Resistance, Medeski Martin & Wood with Alarm Will Sound, Gilles Peterson, The Bad Plus, Yussef Dayes, and more. Full schedule TBA.
