Wu-Tang Clan art pop-up in NYC this month

Wu-Tang Clan have had the spotlight on them all year, from their tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of their debut album, to two different TV series about them. Now Absolut Art is opening a two-day Wu-Tang inspired NYC art pop up on October 24 & 25 at 555 West 25th St in Chelsea featuring signed, limited edition prints by over 20 artists, including Hank Willis Thomas, Rashaad Newsome, Tiff Massey, Baseera Khan, Jayson Musson, and more. Here’s more from the press release:

Since their 1993 debut, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), Wu-Tang Clan have established themselves at the center of a global cultural movement, unapologetically vocalizing issues of class, race, and oppression that remain urgent today. From Tiff Massey’s Bitch Don’t Touch My Hair!! neon to Hank Willis Thomas’s “African American Express” credit card, representing the black bodies America was built upon, many of the artists chosen for the collection address the same racial problems that Wu-Tang has fearlessly spoken about since the 1990s.

Others, like Rashaad Newsome, have been impressed by Wu-Tang’s inventive musical production. RZA’s experiments collaging sounds and beats are echoed in Newsome’s layering of magazine cut-outs. Some artists have paid tribute to the hip-hop group more literally, like Lil Kool or Michael Lukowski, who created a piece using photography captured by friends and family of the Wu, artifacts from the original Wu-Wear store on Staten Island, and various other ephemera that represent key moments in the group’s existence.

Prints range from $275 to $10,000 and will be open from 11AM – 3PM on October 24 & 25. More info on the pop-up is here. and you can check out the full list of participating artists below.

Meanwhile, Wu-Tang Clan just played Rolling Loud in NYC and Desert Daze in California last weekend.
