Wye Oak, Ted Leo, Bully, & Bodega played BrooklynVegan’s SXSW showcase (pics)

Just a couple hours after the first of our three “Lost Weekend 2″ day parties at Cheer Up Charlies wrapped up, BrooklynVegan’s official nighttime SXSW showcase took play at Historic Scoot Inn. It was a busy Thursday. Part of the Brooklyn Bowl Family Reunion, our showcase featured sets from Wye Oak, Bully, Ted Leo, and Bodega. Pictures fron the night are in the gallery above.

Bodega were a perfect opener for the night (not just alphabetically speaking), and chances are it was the crowd’s first exposure to the Brooklyn band. Their punchy, post-punk sound, highly quotable lyrics, and fun live show won people over pretty quick. They played a good chunk of their debut album which was produced by Parquet Courts’ Austin Brown and will be out in June via What’s Yr Rupture.

Bully were up next and split their set pretty evenly between their 2015 Columbia debut and their 2017 album on Sub Pop. Alicia put down her guitar for the last song to just sing, and it turns out she’s an even more compelling performer without a guitar holding her back from going totally nuts. Folks in NYC can catch Bully tonight at House of Vans.

Ted Leo started off his only SXSW show of the week by saying he was going to set the tone and take the mood down. Ted is compelling whether he’s playing with The Pharmacists or, like here, solo and his set featured songs from last year’s The Hanged Man, along with some older stuff and he finished the night with “Let’s Stay on the Moon.”

This was the last SXSW show for headliners Wye Oak and only their third show so far with their current trio lineup. They played almost all of their new album — including one which made its live debut — and they sounded great as usual.
