NYC chamber ensemble yMusic will release their new album, First, on February 17 via their own Communal Table Records. The record was composed entirely by Son Lux, produced by Thomas Bartlett (aka Doveman), and structured like a rock album with 11 tracks, a 40-minute running time and a distinct side-A/side-B feel. They’ve worked with Son Lux before — he wrote their first piece “Beautiful Mechanical” and produced 2014’s Balance Problems — and the record was made quickly with two days of rehearsal and two in the studio. You can watch a trailer for the album, which premieres in this post, below.

You may have seen yMusic open for Bon Iver at Pioneer Works this month. They also worked on Okkervil River’s new album, played with Jose Gonzaleztoured with Ben Folds for the collaborative album they made, and they’ll be performing with ANOHNI in Germany in April. Before that they’ll be touring North America, including a performance at Brooklyn’s National Sawdust on February 5. The performance is titled “The Evolution of Song” and features two new commissioned works by David Biedenbender and Gabriella Smith. Tickets for that show are on sale now.
