Yo La Tengo celebrated their new LP at Brooklyn Steel (pics, video, setlist)

Yo La Tengo‘s tour supporting new album There’s a Riot Going On hit NYC on Friday night (4/6) for a sold-out show at Brooklyn Steel which also marked the one-year anniversary of the venue. It was “An Evening With” show and Yo La Tengo played two sets: the first darker and mellow, and the second brighter and more rocking. As usual, they included a few covers in their set, including songs by Velvet Underground and John Cale, and Ira Kaplan went into the crowd and passed around his guitar during “Ohm.” Check out video of “Ohm” and their cover of VU’s “She’s My Best Friend” below.

At the merch table was a free crossword puzzle that was made by YLT’s Ira and college professor Ben Tausig. (Take that, Weird Al.) Speaking of factoids: did you know Georgia Hubley is the daughter of acclaimed animators John and Faith Hubley? John created Mr. Magoo after working on many classic Disney films, including Snow White and Pinocchio. Georgia’s sister Emily is also an animator who worked with her parents and whose resume includes the animation in the film version of Hedwig and the Angry Inch (Yo La Tengo did a cover for the tribute album Wig in a Box).

Pictures from Yo La Tengo’s Brooklyn Steel show are in the gallery above and setlist (via Setlist.fm) is below.
