We’re in the home stretch of Yo La Tengo‘s 2019 Hanukkah celebration at Bowery Ballroom with just three nights left. Night 5 (12/6), was full of surprises and great music, as usual. Smog’s Bill Callahan opened for a set with Dirty Three’s Jim White, making his second appearance of the week, on drums, and Bill also joined Yo La Tengo for their encore to cover Carly Simon’s “Touched By The Sun.”

The rest of the encore featured Big Star drummer Jody Stephens behind the kit, as Ira, Georgia and James covered T-Rex’s “Baby Strange” as well as three Big Star songs: “Way Out West,” “September Gurls,” and “Blue Moon,” the latter of which Ira said was he thought was the most beautiful song ever but “it was up to scientists to decide later” on what song actually gets that recognition.

On the comedy front, Jon Benjamin and Jon Glaser came out as the sons of gruff character actors Dennis Franz and Dennis Farina, both of whom were named Dave, and then John Oliver made a surprise appearance for a set as well.

Yuka Honda from Cibo Matto made the night’s mix CD (which was played before the show and in-between sets, and proceeds from the evening benefited the Center For Constitutional Rights.
