Yo La Tengo wrapped up Hanukkah w/ Steve Wynn, Peter Stampfel, Todd Barry & more (pics, video, setlist)

The final night of Yo La Tengo‘s 2018 Hanukkah run had a couple of familiar appearances. Todd Barry, who has done a lot of YLT Hanukkahs, was the night’s comedian along with another Todd, WFMU’s Todd-o-phonic Todd (aka former Maxwell’s booker, Todd Abramson) and Ira’s mom, Marilyn Kaplan, came out during the encore. The night started with a nice surprise, however: Canadian surf instrumentalists and Kids in the Hall soundtrackers Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet were in the house as the night’s opener, and they joined Ira, Georgia and James for part of their main set, including covers of Modern Lovers’ “She Cracked” and “Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me.”

For the second half their set, YLT brought out folk legend Peter Stampfel, including covers of fellow Holy Modal Rounder Michael Hurley’s “Polynesia #1,” The Left Banke’s “Walk Away Renee,” and The Fugs’ “New Amphetamine Shriek” (that also had Peter’s collaborator Jeffrey Lewis on vocals). Their main set opened with a cover of The Dream Syndicate’s “Tell Me When It’s Over” and included two of their most famous ’90s songs, “Autumn Sweater” and “Tom Courtney.”

The Dream Syndicate cover was also a little foreshadowing, as they brought out Steve Wynn during the encore for more Dream Syndicate songs (“That’s What You Always Say,” “Glide,” and “The Days of Wine and Roses”) and a cover of Bob Dylan and The Band’s “Apple Suckling Tree.” Peter Stampfel came out again, with Ira’s mom, for a version of Michael Hurley/Unholy Modal Rounders/Jeffrey Frederick & The Clamtones song “Griselda,” and then the night ended with “My Little Corner of the World.” Setlist, via Jesse Jarnow, and videos from the night are below.

The Feelies’ Dave Weckerman made the night’s mix CD and proceeds went to the New York Civil Liberties Union.
