Zhrine opening Ulcerate tour (dates & 'Unortheta' LP stream)
Icelandic metal outift Zhrine released their debut album earlier this year, the epic, black/death metal record Unortheta, on Season of Mist. They’ve been building buzz throughout the year, impressing as a last-minute addition at Maryland Deathfest (guitarist Nökkvi Gylfason’s project Svartidaud). Invisible Oranges also gave them some love in their best of 2016 (so far) lists. Now they’re set to embark on a high-profile North American tour, as they’ll be hitting the road with New Zealand death metal maniacs Ulcerate.
Unortheta mixes the kind of dissonant, knotty, Deathspell Omega-influenced black metal with both deathier and more emotional shades. There’s prog mixed in with tech-death brutality from time to time, as well as nearly ambient textures and jazzy passages. Above all Zhrine exhibit a great ear for composition that keeps these songs consistently interesting and compelling, and keeps the listener guessing at what might be around the next corner. That Ulcerate tour, which also features Phobocosm, stops in NYC for a show at Saint Vitus on November 29. Tickets for that show are still on sale.
Meanwhile, Ulcerate recently shared another new song, the title track from the upcoming Shrines of Paralysis which drops on October 28.
