10 New Metal & Hardcore Songs Out This Week
It's a shorter week with less new music than usual because of the Fourth of July, but there are still some great new metal, metal-adjacent, and hardcore albums out this week (all of which are from non-American artists, not surprisingly). I reviewed the new Boris, Jesu, A.A. Williams (ft. members of Cult of Luna), and Glorious (new band from members of Employed To Serve and Renounced) in Notable Releases, and we also got a new Depeche Mode cover by Failure, and new songs from Liturgy/LEYA, Atramentus, Year of the Knife, Deafkids/Petbrick, The Ocean, Necrot, Emma Ruth Rundle, and more. Scroll down for the new heavy songs we posted this week.
Also, today is a Bandcamp Day and we rounded up over 50 special/exclusive releases out today for that, including Sunn O))), Marissa Nadler, Spotlights (Jawbox cover), the Overgrow to Overthrow benefit comp with tons of metal bands, John Carpenter, This Will Destroy You, Mutoid Man, Sumac, Between the Buried and Me, and more.
FAILURE - "ENJOY THE SILENCE" (DEPECHE MODE COVER, 2020 VERSION)
Spacey, shoegazey alt-rockers Failure (whose drummer Kellii Scott is recovering from cancer) released a new version of their cover of Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence," which they originally recorded for the 1998 Depeche Mode tribute album For The Masses, which -- as Failure frontman Ken Andrews says -- "has all but disappeared, no longer in print and not available via streaming platforms." He adds, "But we as a band are proud of our take on that song and had wanted to re-record it for some time. With the blessing of both Martin Gore and Depeche Mode, we re-addressed our version and came up with this new version for 2020."
LITURGY & LEYA - "ANTIGONE"
Liturgy and LEYA, who were supposed to tour together this year, recorded this collaboration right before the pandemic started. You can read more about it here.
ATRAMENTUS - STYGIAN (EXCERPT I)
Canadian funeral dommers Atramentus (members of Chthe'ilist) are releasing Stygian on August 21 via 20 Buck Spin, and the first excerpt of the album is out now. It's two and a half minutes long, and it's already very promising.
YEAR OF THE KNIFE - "MANIPULATION ARTIST"
Rising metallic hardcore band Year of the Knife have debuted the third single off their upcoming Kurt Ballou-recorded Pure Noise debut, Internal Incarceration. "Manipulation Artist" is pretty fucking brutal, and vocalist Tyler Mullen tells Revolver that it's "about questioning your own sanity while you are trapped in a cycle of abuse from a manipulative, toxic partner."
DEAFKIDS & PETBRICK - "FORCA BRUTA"
Neurosis-cosigned Brazilian psych-punks Deafkids and industrial duo Petbrick (featuring original Sepultura drummer Iggor Cavalera) are releasing a collaborative album, Deafbrick, on September 4 via Neurot Recordings, and the first taste is the absolutely pummeling "Força Bruta."
THE OCEAN - "JURASSIC | CRETACEOUS" (ft. KATATONIA's JONAS RENSKE
In 2018, German progressive metal greats The Ocean released Phanerozoic I: Palaezoic, which was part one of a two-part project that they said would be completed in 2020. Now they've revealed that part two, Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic | Cenozoic, comes out September 25 via Metal Blade/Pelagic, and the first single is the truly epic, 13-and-a-half minute "Jurassic | Cretaceous" which features Katatonia's Jonas Renske.
NECROT - "INTO THE LABYRINTH" (2020 VERSION)
While we wait Necrot's highly anticipated sophomore album Mortal, we also get treated to a new recording of "Into the Labyrinth" which originally appeared on the band's 2012 EP/demo of the same name. The re-recording is for a Decibel flexi, and as you may expect, it rips.
EMMA RUTH RUNDLE - "STAYING POWER"
Emma Ruth Rundle has released a new song that was recorded during the sessions for her great 2018 album On Dark Horses (Sargent House) but didn't make the cut, and it's as dark and stunning as anything on that album. Read more about it here.
MAGGOT HEART - "GUTTER FEELING"
Maggot Heart -- the project of Linnéa Olsson (who also played in Beastmilk, Grave Pleasures, Sonic Ritual, and The Oath) -- are releasing their new album Mercy Machine next week (7/10) and new single "Gutter Feeling" finds their unique brand of dark rock in fine form.
ARS MAGNA UMBRAE - "ORACLE OF LUMINOUS DARK"
Polish black metallers Ars Magna Umbrae are releasing their new album Apotheosis on August 21 via I, Voidhanger Records, and first single "Oracle of Luminous Dark" is a punishing blend of venomous screams and dark, psychedelic atmosphere.
