10 New Rap Songs Out This Week

This week in hip hop we got the highly anticipated new Lizzo/Missy Elliott collab, the first single off Megan Thee Stallion’s upcoming Fever project, the second new Injury Reserve song of 2019 (ft. Amine), a stream of the Quelle Chris album, another new Tierra Whack song, and more. Not exactly rap, but I’d also point hip hop fans in the direction of the new Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah album, which does have some guest rapping on it. Read on for the all the hip hop we posted on BV this week…

LIZZO – “TEMPO” (FT. MISSY ELLIOTT)

Lizzo’s new album Cuz I Love You is due out April 19, and ahead of its release she’s dropped another new single, this one a dream-team collaboration with Missy Elliott. “She sent me a memoji of herself singing her verse,” Lizzo told Travis Mills on Apple Music’s Beats 1, “thats how I got the verse…I got a memoji of Missy like smiling and then she just started rapping, and I was like, ‘OMG what the hell’ so I had to hook it up to my speaker system.”

MEGAN THEE STALLION – “SEX TALK”

Megan Thee Stallion released Tina Snow last year, and the project’s steady rise came to a peak earlier this month with the release of the “Big Ole Freak” video. A few weeks later, she was the talk of SXSW, and now she has dropped a new single off her upcoming project Fever. “Sex Talk” proves that her beastly rhymes are only getting better.

INJURY RESERVE – “JAILBREAK THE TESLA” (ft. AMINE)

Having just put on a great set at the BrooklynVegan SXSW day party, avant-rap group Injury Reserve shared another single from their forthcoming album for Loma Vista. Following their Rico Nasty collab, this one features Aminé, who takes a break from his usual sunnier style and sounds great within Injury Reserve’s dark, industrial world.

JAMILA WOODS – “EARTHA”

Jamila Woods has shared a third single off her anticipated new album LEGACY! LEGACY! (due 5/10 via Jagjaguwar). “EARTHA’ was inspired by artist/activist Eartha Kitt, and Jamila says, “‘Who gonna share my love for me with me?’ These are the thoughts that play in your head after an argument with your partner. These are the pages you write in your journal the next morning. This is everything you wish you could have said, or everything you’ve said a million times without it being heard. The moment you realize you are worthy of more. Inspired by the badass spirit and wisdom of Eartha Kitt.”

QUELLE CHRIS – GUNS (ALBUM STREAM)

Indie-rap great Quelle Chris’ new album Guns comes out next week (3/29) via Mello Music Group. You can stream the whole thing at NPR and hear the latest single, “Obamacare,” below.

TIERRA WHACK – “UNEMPLOYED”

Tierra Whack continues to drop a new single a week, and she’s now back with “Unemployed.” The last one saw her in melodic sing-rapping mode, but this one’s got a neck-snapping beat and Whack sounds tough as nails over it.

SEBA KAAPSTAD – “AFRICA”

Neo-soul quarter Seba Kaapstad are releasing their sophomore album Thina on May 17 via Mello Music Group, and we wrote more about new single “Africa” here.

FLUME – HI THIS IS FLUME MIXTAPE (ft. JPEGMAFIA, SLOWTHAI & more)

Flume dropped a new mixtape this week, and among the guests are Baltimore rapper JPEGMAFIA and UK rapper slowthai.

KOFFEE – RAPTURE (EP STREAM)

While caught up in the midst of SXSW craziness last week, we missed that Jamaican singer Koffee followed her promising singles with her debut EP Rapture. It includes the singles “Raggamuffin,” “Toast,” and “Throne,” as well as two previously unreleased songs: the title track and “Blazin” (ft. Jane Macgizmo). The new songs are just as appealing as the previously-released ones, and the whole thing makes for a great introduction to Koffee’s modern, electronic/hip hop twist on reggae and dancehall.

KOOL KEITH – “UNCRUSHABLE” / DEAD CROSS – “CHURCH OF THE MOTHERFUCKERS” MASHUP

Kool Keith is releasing a 7″ on Justin Pearson’s Three One G label, and it features the previously-released Planet B remix of “Blast,” as well as this official mashup of Keith’s new single “Uncrushable” and “Church of the Motherfuckers” by metal supergroup Dead Cross (featuring Pearson, Faith No More’s Mike Patton, Slayer’s Dave Lombardo, and Retox’s Michael Crain). Whether or not you’re usually big on mashups, it’s hard to deny that these songs sound killer together. Listen at Rolling Stone.
