Bun B Return of the Trill

10 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

BUN B – “MYSELF” (ft. RUN THE JEWELS and BIG K.R.I.T.)

The surviving half of legendary Southern rap duo UGK, Bun B released a new album today, Return of the Trill. It’s got a lot of impressive guests, but perhaps most excitingly is Run The Jewels on “Myself.” Bun B, Killer Mike, and El-P sound as menacing as ever, and hearing them together over this song’s psychedelic, trunk-rattling production is a real treat. Making it even better, it’s got a hook from Big K.R.I.T. (who’s got verses on two other songs on the album).

BLACK EYED PEAS – “CONSTANT PART 1 & 2”

When we left off with Black Eyed Peas, they had gone fully into EDM-pop territory, but now they’re back (without Fergie) and have been dropping songs with more of a nostalgic hip hop vibe, like the new “Constant Part 1 & 2” which samples Slick Rick and has a cameo from The Ruler in the song’s video.

AVA LUNA – “CHILDISH”

Ava Luna‘s new album Moon 2 is out next week, and here’s one more taste before you get the whole thing: the slinky, sultry “Childish.” It comes with a striking video, directed by Becca Kauffman and Bucky Illingworth. “Childish features multiple facets of self. It takes you through self-doubt counteracted by buoyant confidence and back down again,” says Ava Luna’s Felicia Douglass. “I wanted the chorus melody to sound like a cheerful tune you could hear kids singing during recess. Inviting, whisking you away from what ails you. There’s no monster under the bed but that doesn’t mean it won’t cross your mind.”

SICK OF IT ALL – “INNER VISION”

NYHC legends Sick Of It All are dropping new LP Wake the Sleeping Dragon on November 2 via Century Media, and they’ve unleashed one of its tracks, “Inner Vision,” along with its dragon-themed lyric video. Other than the more modern production, it sounds like it could’ve fit on Sick Of It All’s debut, but there’s no need for SOIA to reinvent the wheel at this point. “Inner Vision” reminds you that, even three decades later, few bands spin it as ruthlessly as they do. SOIA are also touring.

MILO – “STET”

Prolific rapper milo will release his new LP budding ornithologists are weary of tired analogies on September 21 via his own Ruby Yacht Records, and just like much of milo’s headier work on releases like So The Flies Won’t Come, this new single is a wonderful showcase of milo’s experimental, freeform rapping style, and features an erratic instrumental from The Jefferson Park Boys. Catch milo on tour with a full band after the album is out.

ARMAND HAMMER – PARAFFIN (ALBUM STREAM)

In related news, milo’s new album follows his collaboration with Elucid (aka Nostrum Grocers), and today Elucid dropped yet another collaborative album. This one’s by Armand Hammer, Elucid’s project with the great Billy Woods. It’s a 15-track journey through blistering rhymes and dark, gritty production. While both rappers are great on their own, together, they’re a totally different beast.

PLANNINGTOROCK – “TRANSOME”

Planningtorock – aka Jam Rostron – will release their fourth album (and first in four years), Powerhouse, on November 9 via Human Level / DFA. With it’s pitched-down vocals, and bright synths, the atmospheric, deeply personal “Transome” makes for an excellent first look at the LP.

GALLANT – “HAHA NO ONE CAN HEAR YOU!”

The latest single from alt-R&B vocalist Gallant is a bassy, seductive slow jam, centering around personal themes of depression and insecurity, which serves as an interesting contrast to the track’s futuristic, soulful sound. And as always, Gallant’s voice is impeccable. According to a press release, “Right now, he’s putting the finishing touches on his anxiously awaited second full-length—coming soon.”

DON Q – “PULL UP (ft. G HERBO & DAVE EAST)

Bronx rapper Don Q just dropped a new album, Don Season 2, which includes “Pull Up,” a tough-sounding team-up with Chicago’s G Herbo and Harlem’s Dave East.

BRANT BJORK – “CHARLIE GIN”

Stoner rock vet (and former Kyuss and Fu Manchu member) Brant Bjork is following 2016’s Tao of the Devil with new album Mankind Woman on September 14 via Heavy Psych Sounds. Its new single “Charlie Gin” “is a song that Bubba [Dupree] and myself put together, combining early rock ingredients like ‘church riffs’ and ‘folk-storytelling’ lyrics,” Brant told Ultimate Classic Rock. “Even with it’s ‘toasting’ to the early-to-mid ’60s post beat, pre-hippie styled song, it has a super fresh feel and sound. It’s one of the songs on the new record that could be indirectly hinting towards where Bubba and I go with our next record.”
