11 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

CAT POWER – “WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW” (JACKIE DESHANNON COVER)

Having already released her great album Wanderer this year, Cat Power now released a cover of the Burt Bacharach and Hal David-penned pop classic “What The World Needs Now,” which Jackie DeShannon released as a single in 1965. Cat Power’s version retains the charm of the original, but as on her many other great covers, she really makes it her own.

ORVILLE PECK – “BIG SKY”

Mysterious psychedelic country artist Orville Peck just signed to Sub Pop, who will release his new album in 2019. While most info on the new album (and Orville Peck’s identity) has not yet been revealed, he released the dark, eerie single “Big Sky” which is pretty promising. He’s also touring with Lord Huron next year.

SLOAN – “ACT YOUR AGES”

Sloan have shared a new song, “Act Your Ages,” which the recorded during the sessions for this year’s excellent album, 12, but was previously only released in Japan. This Chris Murphy-penned, ’70s-ish-sounding song is now available for worldwide consumption.

GUIDED BY VOICES – “MY ANGEL”

Guided by Voices get a little glammy on “My Angel” which will appear on a new 7″ single this week, as well as their new album Warp and Woof which will be their second album of 2019.

KEY! & KENNY BEATS – “REMEMBER ME” (RICO NASTY)

Producer Kenny Beats has been having a hell of a year, having produced much of Vince Staples FM! and Rico Nasty’s Nasty, a recent JPEGMAFIA single, a recent ALLBLACK EP, and more. He just released a deluxe version of 777, his collaborative project with KEY!, and includes “Remember Me” which features an awesome, fired-up Rico Nasty verse.

THE SPECIALS – “VOTE FOR ME”

The Specials will release Encore, their first album with frontman Terry Hall in nearly 40 years, in February. First single “Vote for Me” picks right up where “Ghost Town” left off.

ALGERNON CADWALLADER – “SERIAL KILLER STATUS” & “KATIE’S CONSCIOUS”

One of the first major emo revival bands, Algernon Cadwallader, are releasing a compilation later this month and here are two previously unreleased songs from it. You can read more here.

POLYENSO – “BASTARD”

Art rockers Polyenso are releasing a new EP in January and we wrote more about new single “Bastard” here.

HARLEM – “QUEEN OF MOSQUITOS”

Late-’00s indie rockers Harlem are back and gearing up to release their first LP in nine years. Here’s another early taste with lovely, mellow and somewhat bummed-out “Queen of Mosquitos.”

JANE CHURCH – “BLEED”

Jane Church, the new band from Matthew Stevenson (who used to lead Spires), will release their debut LP, Calimocho Molotov!, on January 18 via Greenway Records. Lead cut “Bleed” takes NYC influences (Lou Reed, Television) to heart, with a little Eno and Bowie in there as well.
