11 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

CASS MCCOMBS – “ESTRELLA”

Cass McCombs has shared a second single off his anticipated new album Tip of the Sphere (due 2/8 via ANTI-), “Estrella,” which is another dose of his laid-back, unique singer/songwriter style, and features him singing a little in Spanish. Cass also performed that song and first single “Sleeping Volcanoes” for a Take Away Show via La Blogotheque and you can watch those below too.

AMERICAN FOOTBALL – “SILHOUETTES”

Influential emo vets American Football have announced their third album and shared the seven-minute lead single, which we wrote more about here.

MEAT PUPPETS – “WARRANTY”

Meat Puppets are back with their original lineup, and “Warranty” is the first single off this lineup’s first album since 1995. Read more here.

MERCURY REV & HOPE SANDOVAL – “BIG BOSS MAN”

Mercury Rev are releasing the guest-filled tribute to Bobbie Gentry, The Delta Sweete Revisited, in February and they’ve just shared “Big Boss Man” that features vocals from Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval. It’s a radical rework from Gentry’s funky, southern-fried original, and its chilled-out vibe fits perfectly with Sandoval’s smoky delivery.

SELF DEFENSE FAMILY – WORKING PEOPLE (PART 1) (EP STREAM)

Self Defense Family released Have You Considered Punk Music on Run for Cover earlier this year, and now they’re sharing a new EP, Working People (Part 1). Proceeds go to SWOP Behind Bars (a chapter of the sex workers outreach project). The band explains the charity choice on Twitter, saying, “We don’t fuck with being told what to do. So FOSTA-SESTA and this whole little snitch culture moment is some shit we’re against. Between physical releases we’re gonna record some charity tracks. Money to good causes. SWOP Behind Bars this time. Selected by @emocutie69. In the past it’s been hard to get us to agree on a cause to direct some money to. But y’all finally went too far and pissed off the lot. So this is part one of a whatever we can do on the topic. Kick up a few dollars for a cause, then do it again in a few months. Format will likely be the same. One ‘single.’ One more difficult track. And a cover. This time we did a Cat Power song that fit the theme.”

THE CLAYPOOL LENNON DELIRIUM – “EASILY CHARMED BY FOOLS”

Primus’ Les Claypool and Sean Ono Lennon will release a new album in February and here’s another twisted wig-out, about the dangers of being hoodwinked.

FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS – “FATHER AND SON”

Brett and Jemaine have released “Father and Song,” which is in their recent HBO live special. A tender back and forth between a boy and his dad, “Cats in the Cradle” this is not.

BOY HARSHER – “FATE”

Brooding synthwave duo Boy Harsher are back with new LP Careful in February, and “Fate” is another alluring, icy jam — this one complete with a somewhat disturbing video.

DAVE HARRINGTON GROUP – “WELL”

Dave Harrington, of Darkside and many other projects, has announced a new DHG album, Pure Imagination, No Country, that’ll be out February. You can get a taste with “Well,” a skittering two-minute dose of jazzy, glitchy psychedelia that’s 100% Harrington.

NATE YOUNG – “IN THE SHADOW OF”

Wolf Eyes frontman Nate Young is putting out a solo ambient/synth album, Volume One: Dilemmas Of Identity, on February 8 via Lower Floor, and Nate shared the minimal but gripping “In The Shadow Of” from that release.

AMANDA PALMER – “DROWNING IN THE SOUND”

Amanda Palmer announced a new full length album, her first since 2012, There Will Be No Intermission, and shared the first single, “Drowning In The Sound,” which we wrote more about here.
