12 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

SLIPKNOT – “BIRTH OF THE CRUEL”

Slipknot’s first album in five years, We Are Not Your Kind, drops this week (8/9) and a third single is here ahead of its release. It’s called “Birth of the Cruel,” and like the two previous singles, it manages to sound like classic Slipknot and take some steps forward too.

BAT FOR LASHES – “THE HUNGER”

Bar for Lashes releases her new album, Lost Girls, on September 6, and she’s shared another synthy, ’80s inspired new track from it, “The Hunger.”

PIVOT GANG – “SOHO FREESTYLE” (ft. KOTA THE FRIEND) & “HOUDINI” (ft. THEMIND)

Chicago rap group Pivot Gang, who count Saba as a member, released their very good new album You Can’t Sit With Us this year and now they’re back with two new singles. One features fellow Chicago rap scene regular theMIND and the other features rising NYC rapper Kota The Friend, and both remind you that both Saba and Pivot Gang are on fire right now.

MOON DUO – “LOST HEADS”

Moon Duo’s new album, Stars Are The Light, is out in September and here’s the second single from the album which takes their droney psych out into the sunshine. “We have changed, the nature of our collaboration has changed, the world has changed, and we wanted the new music to reflect that,” says Sanae Yamada of the song which is both poppy and very much a Moon Duo song.

JOYERO – “STEEPEST STAIRS”

Release the Dogs, the debut LP from Wye Oak multi-instrumentalist Andy Stack’s new solo project Joyero, is due out August 23 via Merge. New sigle “Steepest Stairs” “is about getting knocked down, beat up, swept away in the chaos that surrounds us, but finding some kind of peace amongst all of the rubble,” Andy says. “Like, you’ve just had the shit kicked out of you, but there are some beautiful blues and purples in the bruising.”

LANA DEL REY – “SEASON OF THE WITCH” (DONOVAN COVER)

Lana Del Rey’s new album Norman Fucking Rockwell is out at the end of the month, and ahead of that she’s shared part of a cover of Donovan’s “Season of the Witch,” from the trailer of Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming film Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Like her album, the cover was produced by Jack Antonoff of Bleachers.

FLYING LOTUS – “BLACK HEAVEN” (ft. RAS G)

Flying Lotus appeared on Gilles Peterson’s BBC Radio 6 Music show to pay tribute to his friend and collaborator Ras G, who sadly passed away a few days earlier. FlyLo spoke about Ras G and also shared a new song that he said he recorded with Ras G the last time he saw him.

FLAME 2 (BURIAL & THE BUG) – “DIVE / RAIN”

Burial (William Bevan) and The Bug (Kevin Martin) collaborated last year on the Fog/Shrine single that was released under the name Flame 1. Now they’re back with a new two-track single under the name Flame 2. “Dive” is all dark, dubby ambience, while “Rain” flirts with danceability with keeping the mood foreboding.

TEMPLES – “YOU’RE EITHER ON SOMETHING”

UK pysch pop band Temples will soon release their third album, Hot Motion, and have just shared new single “You’re Either On Something” that’s propelled by a groovy beat and falsetto vocals. “I’m really proud of ‘You’re Either On Something’ lyrically because I feel deeply connected with the words – they’re so truthful,” says frontman James Bagshaw. “On that track, I can hear influences of stuff that I listened to when I was growing up. There’s almost a nostalgia to that track, even though it’s very forward-looking.”

GOLD PANDA – “TRANSACTIONAL RELATIONSHIP”

Gold Panda’s new single “Transactional Relationship” is based around a sample of Hilary Woods’ “Sever,” which is from her 2018 album, Colt. “I made the track at home. I had a track nearly done and I’d bought the Hilary Woods LP after seeing her support Low at the Barbican and decided to give it a play during a tea break,” says Dicker. “There were bits that went really well with what I’d made so I decided to chop parts up in my mpc and layered them over my track, thus ruining Hilary’s song for evermore. I did a sort of ‘live take’ and that was it.”

NOEL GALLAGHER – “THIS IS THE PLACE”

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds will release a new EP, titled This is the Place, on September 27. He’s just shared the title track, a danceable psych track nodding to the early ’90s Madchester scene.
