12 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

THE HELIO SEQUENCE – “NO REGRETS” (ACOUSTIC)

In addition to touring behind the 10th anniversary of their most-loved album Keep Your Eyes Ahead, indie vets The Helio Sequence will will put out a newly remastered deluxe reissue of the album on October 12 via Sub Pop. Today they released the remastered version of “Lately” and one of the 11 bonus tracks, an acoustic version of “No Regrets,” which is noticeably different from the original album version. This version is a lovely folk song, sort of in the same vein as Keep Your Eyes Ahead‘s “Shed Your Love.” Full tracklist, pre-order, and more info here.

JOHN GRANT – “HE’S GOT HIS MOTHER’S HIPS” and “TOUCH & GO”

John Grant releases his new album Love is Magic on October 12 via Partisan, and following the electro-glam of the title track, he’s shared two more songs off the album. John says the first, “He’s Got His Mother’s Hips,” is “about a cheeseball doing all he can to get into a woman’s pants, making a total ass of himself.” The second, “Touch & Go,” is a tribute to Chelsea Manning with poignant lyrics and easy listening sounds. “I was very touched by her incredible story,” John says. “What kind of strength does it take to survive like that, hated by people who say she’s a pervert who doesn’t deserve to live?”

GABBY’S WORLD – “REAR VIEW”

Formerly known as Ó and before that, Eskimeaux, Gabby’s World is the new name for Gabrielle Smith’s musical project. She’s announced a new album under the name, Beast On Beast (due November 2 via Yellow K Records), and shared its first single, “Rear View,” a dose of bright indie pop.

MIKE SIMONETTI – “OF ONE MIND”

While best known as former owner of labels Italians Do it Better and Troubleman Unlimited, Mike Simonetti makes music as well and is set to release Solipsism (Collected Works 2006 – 2013) on September 28 via his new label, SMR. The album culls mostly unreleased material during his tenure at Italians Do it Better. Many of them were originally for a Hollywood film that never ended up getting made. Here’s “Of One Mind,” a four-on-the-floor number that is atmospheric as well. He’s DJing on Labor Day in Brooklyn, too.

HOVVDY – “EASY”

Saddle Creek describes their Document Series, which features “unreleased music from artists outside of the label’s roster, along with a specially curated zine created by the artist,” as “an attempt to highlight our home city through music and art.” The fifth edition features Austin, TX band Hovvdy, and they’ve shared a song from it, the lovely, laid back “Easy.”

GRAHAM VAN PELT – “RELEASE YOURSELF”

He was in Think About Life and made music as Miracle Fortress, but now Graham Van Pelt is releasing an album under his own name. Check out the first single and read more about it HERE.
