12 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

THE WEEKND – “HEARTLESS”

The Weeknd is back with new music. He teased the new song “Blinding Lights” in a Mercedes ad, and he officially released the Metro Boomin-produced “Heartless” which isn’t far removed from the type of sad, druggy R&B he became known for at the beginning of this decade.

CITY GIRLS – “YOU TRIED IT”

City Girls have dropped their second new single since JT was released from prison, and it comes with a twerk-filled video, but it’s not just a party song. It’s pretty menacing stuff too.

BOMBAY BICYCLE CLUB – “EVERYTHING ELSE HAS GONE WRONG”

Bombay Bicycle Club have shared a second single (and title track) off their first album in six years, Everything Else Has Gone Wrong, and it’s another promising taste of this record. It adds a hint of psychedelia to their sugary indie pop, and it finds this band sounding reinvigorated after their hiatus. “I found my second wind,” Jack Steadman sings. Indeed.

NICOLAS GODIN (AIR) – “THE FOUNDATION” FT. COLA BOYY

Air co-founder Nicolas Godin released “The Border” earlier this year and he’s now announced that song will be on his new solo album, Concrete and Glass, which will be out January 24 via Because Music. With the announcement comes new single “The Foundation,” which features vocals from Cola Boyy. It’s a typically, chilled out track, lush and groovy and comes with a sci-fi themed video.

QUANDO RONDO – “MARVELOUS” (ft. POLO G)

Rising rappers Quando Rondo and Polo G team up for some heavily melancholic sing-rapping.

VALEE – “JAY LENO”

Valee left a huge mark on hip hop last year with his oft-imitated flow and his great single “Womp Womp.” Now he’s back with another new loosie, “Jay Leno.”

TRENT REZNOR & ATTICUS ROSS – WATCHMEN: VOLUME 2 (LP STREAM)

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are releasing their score to HBO’s fantastic Watchmen series in three parts. Volume One came out earlier this month, and here’s the second, 13-track installment; the third is due on December 16.

CHARGER – “WATCH YOUR BACK”

Rancid bassist Matt Freeman’s band Charger are following this past spring’s self-titled EP with the “Watch Your Back” 12″ single on Pirates Press Records, and that new song is streaming now. Like the EP, “Watch Your Back” finds Freeman & co mixing in some Motorhead worship with classic street punk, and here’s what Freeman says about it: “The impetus to Watch Your Back is there is surveillance everywhere. Whether it’s the government, tech companies, or your neighbors, you have to watch your back.”

FOREST SWORDS – “TAKING OFF,” “SWARM,” “DO DRONES GO TO HEAVEN?”

Forest Swords, aka Liverpool producer and artist Matthew Barnes, is scoring his first film, a task he seems well suited to. The film in question is “speculative architect” and director Liam Young’s The Machine Air, which is billed as “part art film, part performance piece” and “the first to be recorded entirely on drones.”

KVELERTAK – “BRATEBRANN”

Kvelertak have announced their first album with their new singer, and this is the first single off of it. Read more here.
