13 New Holiday Songs Released This Week
The holidays are upon us, and whether you’re feeling festive or not, musicians are climbing aboard the holiday bandwagon with new songs for the season. We offer to you a week’s worth of them, nestled in one place, like gifts under a tree.
SCONE CASH PLAYERS - "MY FIRST DIVORCED CHRISTMAS (SANTA GOT A DIVORCE)"
Back in November, we posted Scone Cash Players' new Christmas singles, both of which offer very different takes on the holidays. Today, we're premiering the very funny video for "My First Divorced Christmas (Santa Got A Divorce)," which as the title suggests, follows Santa and Mrs. Claus through a tough period of separation, including scenes of Santa browsing Tinder, and Mrs. Claus drowning her sorrows in a bottle of whiskey. The singles are available on vinyl and digitally.
THE VOIDZ - "I WISH IT WAS CHRISTMAS TODAY" (SNL COVER)
The Julian Casablancas side project released their cover/demo version of "I Wish It Was Christmas Today," an original song regularly performed on SNL (the most recent performance was with Ariana Grande on Fallon). Unlike the upbeat original, this version is just as weird as you'd expect from a Voidz track, with Julian's slurred, rambling delivery taking the song into much murkier territory. Julian also released a more cheery cover of the track in 2009, and you can hear both versions below.
VARIOUS ARTISTS - "A VERY SPIDEY CHRISTMAS"
The new animated Spider-Man film Into The Spider-Verse opened in theaters last week to positive reception, and the film contains a joke about a supposed Christmas album recorded by Spider-Man himself. The record now exists in reality, with cast members Chris Pine, Jorma Taccone, Shameik Moore, and Jake Johnson lending their voices to the project.
SAD13 - "NO GIFT"
Annual winter holiday songs from Speedy Ortiz' Sadie Dupuis have been a tradition for the past few years. This year's is released under her solo moniker Sad13, and features lyrics describing her desire to spend Christmas with a significant other, and her frustration with day-to-day life.
AZEALIA BANKS - "ICY COLORS CHANGE EP"
Azealia Banks shared a new Christmas EP Icy Colors Change this week, which features the original, upbeat title track, along with two soulful covers: "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" and "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve." For a three-song release, it packs a lot of punch.
RAE SREMMURD - "CHRISTMAS AT SWAE'S" / "NOTHING FOR CHRISTMAS"
Trap duo Rae Sremmurd dropped a new pair of holiday-themed tracks, with members Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi taking lead on each respective track. The first song "Christmas at Swae's" has Swae Lee contemplating on the many ways he'll spend the holidays with a lover, and the second track "Nothing For Christmas" is a silly, wild banger dominated by Slim Jxmmi's shouted raps.
THE FLAMING LIPS - "PEACE ON EARTH / LITTLE DRUMMER BOY"
The Flaming Lips shared their version of David Bowie and Bing Crosby's medley "Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy," featuring a fittingly trippy, colorful music video filmed at Wayne Coyne's own Pink Floor Studios. It's a pretty faithful cover, but it's not without the usual psychedelic flourishes, including various vocal effects and swirling synths.
SOAK - "DRIVING HOME FOR CHRISTMAS" (CHRIS REA COVER)
Irish songwriter SOAK (real name Bridie Monds-Watson) released a tender, heartfelt cover of Chris Rea's "Driving Home For Christmas," which takes the grand, sentimental original and strips it down to its bare essentials, allowing the song's lyrics and Bridie's soft vocals to take center stage.
JOHN LEGEND AND ESPERANZA SPALDING - "HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS"
John Legend released his new holiday album A Legendary Christmas in October, which features a jazzy rendition of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" with Esperanza Spalding. This week, the two performed the cover on NBC's The Voice, which allowed both artists to showcase their incredible live vocals.
JOYFUL NOISE RECORDINGS - "HOLIDAY PARTY, VOL. 2"
Label Joyful Noise released the sequel to last year's Holiday Party compilation album, and this year's comp features holiday tracks from Danielson with Deerhoof's Greg Saunier, Kishi Bashi, Oneida, No Joy, and several others. Like last year's album, this year's comp is for a good cause; proceeds will go towards Second Helpings, "a non-profit that rescues perishable food, to feed people in need, all while providing culinary job training for disadvantaged adults."
WOODS - "CHRISTMAS TIME IS HERE" (VINCE GUARALDI TRIO COVER)
Psych/folk rockers Woods released a cover of the Charlie Brown Christmas classic "Christmas Time Is Here," which substitutes the original's gentle piano with twangy guitars, and Jeremy Earl's double-tracked vocals standing in for the choir.
