13 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

MICHAEL KIWANUKA – “SOMETHING IN THE WAY” (NIRVANA COVER)

Psychedelic soul artist Michael Kiwanuka releases his great new album Kiwanuka at midnight (read our review), and in support of the album, he did a live session for The Tunnel, in which he covered Nirvana’s “Something In The Way.” He plays it pretty straight, but he still finds a way to add that Kiwanuka flair to it.

AJ TRACEY & SKEPTA – “KISS & TELL”

Fresh off releasing the expanded deluxe edition of his self-titled debut album, rising grime MC AJ Tracey links with veteran grime icon Skepta for this very fun new collab.

RUSSIAN BATHS – “WRONG”

Brookyn’s Russian Baths release their debut album next week and here’s one last early taste. Kicking off with crisp drums, “Wrong” soon blows into dark maelstrom of brooding guitars. It’s a gothy ripper.

SEATBELTS – “BLACK SPRING”

Seatbelts, the new UK band from ex members of Liverpool’s Hooton Tennis Club, have been working with Edwyn Collins of Orange Juice on their debut album and here’s a new single that touches on Brexit fears against a melancholic, acoustic backing.

TACOCAT – “RETROGRADE”

If you follow astrology, you know that Mercury Retrograde, the phenomenon when Mercury appears to move backwards, causing technology, communication, and scheduling issues, began today in Scorpio. In honor of that inconvenient transit, and Halloween, Tacocat share new single “Retrograde,” which follows their 2019 album This Mess is a Place.

TWIN PEAKS – “OUR WORLD”

Chicago’s Twin Peaks recently released Lookout Low which found the indie band embracing ’70s influences, and now here comes a brand new standalone single that was recorded during the same session. Says the band’s Cadien Lake James: “One day last year amidst some moment of (the constant) political turmoil or another, I read a tweet Connor posted encouraging all that despite the current state of affairs, ‘it’s still our world.’ I wrote the lyrics for ‘Our World’ directly after. Despite not fitting into the sequence of Lookout Low, it’s one of our favorites.”

21 SAVAGE – “IMMORTAL”

After previewing it in the trailer for Mortal Kombat 11 late last year, 21 Savage has finally officially released his new song “Immortal,” which finds him sounding as threatening as you’d hope for from a song in Mortal Kombat.

BEACH BUNNY – “DREAM BOY”

Chicago indie pop band Beach Bunny’s lead vocalist and songwriter, Lili Trifilio, began the band as a singer-songwriter project in 2015. Now they’ve announced their debut LP, Honeymoon, due out February 14 via Mom + Pop. They’ve also shared a catchy, breezy new single, “Dream Boy.” About it, Lili says, “‘Dream Boy’ was inspired by summer love—it is a song about being jaded to the idea of falling for someone again after being heartbroken in the past. It’s about giving into the butterflies in your stomach even when love seems so scary at times. In the context of Honeymoon, ‘Dream Boy’ is an anthem of change in perspective, instead of viewing love as difficult the listener begins to open up to the possibility that just because the past was painful, doesn’t mean the future has to be. It reminds me of the color baby blue, poolside romance, and the optimism of summer’s beginning.”

QUEENSWAY – THE REAL FEAR (EP STREAM)

Baltimore hardcore crew Queensway are gearing up to hit the road with Sanction, Vatican, and Fuming Mouth, and just ahead of that trek, they’ve dropped this new five-song EP. If you’re unfamiliar, Queensway strike a balance between beastly metal grows, tough ’90s hardcore, and just a hint of rap-metal, and their riffs really groove. That’s all on display, and in very fine form, on this new batch of songs.

DEERHUNTER – “TIMEBENDER”

Powered by elegant piano, this brand new, nearly 13-minute Deerhunter epic takes a few wild twists and turns before winding back where it began.

LA ROUX – “INTERNATIONAL WOMAN OF LEISURE”
