13 New Songs Out Today
So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we'd call "indie," and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. In these concertless times, that includes daily livestreams and live concert videos we love. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here's a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
YEAR OF THE KNIFE - "MANIPULATION ARTIST"
Rising metallic hardcore band Year of the Knife have debuted the third single off their upcoming Kurt Ballou-recorded Pure Noise debut, Internal Incarceration. "Manipulation Artist" is pretty fucking brutal, and vocalist Tyler Mullen tells Revolver that it's "about questioning your own sanity while you are trapped in a cycle of abuse from a manipulative, toxic partner."
JADASEA - "DEEP END" (PROD. KING KRULE)
Fresh off appearing on MIKE's great new album Weight of the World, UK rapper Jadasea put out his own new single produced by past collaborator King Krule (under his Edgar The Beatmaker guise). It's a great dose of hypnotic, chilled-out UK rap.
RINA SAWAYAMA - "DANCE IN THE DARK" (LADY GAGA COVER)
Spotify launched a Pride edition of its singles series, and the first cover is from Rina Sawayama, taking on Lady Gaga. "One of my fave songs by Lady Gaga , 'Dance in the Dark,' she writes. "I recorded this at home, working remotely with Clarence Clarity . Happy Intersectional Pride everybody."
ORVILLE PECK - "SMALLTOWN BOY" (BRONSKI BEAT COVER)
For the same singles series, Orville Peck recorded a cover of Bronski Beat's 1984 hit "Smalltown Hit," giving it a hearty helping of twang.
FRANK TURNER - "FALLING IN LOVE" (NOFX COVER)
Frank Turner has shared another song off West Coast Vs. Wessex, a split album with NOFX where both artists cover the other's songs. "I’ve long thought ['Falling In Love'] was one of [Fat Mike's] best compositions," Frank told FLOOD. "It’s a beautiful lyric and melody, and I wanted to come at the song in a way that would lay that bare and highlight the beauty of the writing." Frank turns the skate punk original into a bare-bones folk song, and it's genuinely cool to hear the song reimagined this way.
DEVENDRA BANHART - "LET'S SEE"
Devendra Banhart releases the Vast Ovoid EP on July 24 via Nonesuch and it's three songs were ones recorded at the same time as his album Ma but didn't quite fit. and here's a second track from it. "Ultimately all three songs are about the difference between disappointment and disillusion," says Devendra, adding it's a "bigger difference than I realized. Lots more freedom in disillusion, lots more breathing space." "Let's See" is charmingly low-fi.
MOLLY TUTTLE - "FAKE EMPIRE" (THE NATIONAL COVER)
Molly Tuttle is releasing an album of cover songs, ...but i'd rather be with you, on August 28, and she's shared the first single, a take on The National's "Fake Empire," which she calls "incredibly timely."
SUN KIL MOON - "LEMON BALM" FT. PETRA HADEN
Here's another song from Sun Kil Moon's upcoming Welcome to Sparks, Nevada. Like "The Johnny Cash Trail," this song has more of a melodic song structure that Mark Kozelek has given us the last few years. It features backup vocals by friend and collaborator Petra Haden.
PUBLIC ENEMY - "FIGHT THE POWER" (2020 VERSION ft. NAS, BLACK THOUGHT, RAPSODY, YG, JAHI, QUESTLOVE)
In the midst of nationwide protests against racism and police brutality, Public Enemy debuted a new version of "Fight The Power" last last night's (6/28) BET Awards, which you can read more about here.
