13 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

SCHAMMASCH – “RAYS LIKE RAZORS”

Switzerland black metallers Schammasch are releasing their new album Hearts Of No Light on November 8th via Prosthetic, and the first single is “Rays Like Razors,” which is blends heaviness, experimentation, and melody in very appealing ways. The band make their US debut at Decibel Metal & Beer Festival in LA this December. Read more here.

THE DARKNESS – “EASTER IS CANCELLED”

Cheeky riff-rockers The Darkness release their new album, Easter is Cancelled, next week and have shared the roaring title track that, as the band themselves note, has it all: “Almighty guitar solos! Riffs galore! Delicate acoustic touches! Highflying falsetto! Barbarian chants! Space-age electronics!”

CARLA DAL FORNO – “PUSH ON”

Australian artist Carla Dal Forno;s new album, Look Up Sharp, is out next week via her own Kallista Records and here’s a gorgeous, mysterious new track from it. “Push On” is quiet but builds nicely with a delicate trip-hop vibe, pulling you in all the while. “Last year I went through a bit of a 90s phase listening to Massive Attack, Movietone, Stereolab, and Portishead,” Carla says. “It pushed me in a new studio direction and I began experimenting with rhythms and melodies I hadn’t worked with before. It also seemed like a fitting lyrical end to the record.”

ELIZABETH (EX TOTALLY MILD) – “BEAUTIFUL BABY”

Elizabeth Mitchell, formerly of disbanded Melbourne band Totally Mild, is releasing her debut full-length as Elizabeth, The Wonderful World of Nature, on November 1 via Our Golden Friend. She’s shared the dreamy, torchy new single “beautiful baby” and its Lynchian video, directed by Triana Hernandez. “‘Beautiful baby’ is about leaving the chaos of a relationship behind,’ Elizabeth told Flood Magazine. “It’s about trying to understand how a love that was so beautiful could be a thing that ends. We took a lot of inspiration from the music of Twin Peaks, hoping to re-imagine the magical spell of Angelo Badalamenti and Julee Cruise.”

PNB ROCK – “FENDI” (ft. NICKI MINAJ & MURDA BEATZ)

Hook-master PnB Rock has tapped Nicki Minaj — who is apparently retiring (?) — for a song named after the luxury fashion brand that Nicki collaborates with. Whether or not this means Nicki is not actually retiring remains to be seen.

CUP (YUKA HONDA / NELS CLINE) – “SPINNING CREATURE”

Cup, the duo of Wilco guitarist Nels Cline and former Cibo Matto member Yuka Honda, will release their debut album, Spinning Creature, on November 1 via Northern Spy. The title track is warm and fuzzy, mixing bossa nova with glitchy pop.

HUNDREDTH – “IRIDESCENT”

Hundredth have shared the final entry in their 2019 singles series, and it sees the band continuing to embrace atmospheric ‘80s post-punk and dream pop, while keeping their modern post-hardcore/emo side intact. If you dig stuff like Turnover, this is worth a listen too.

SUDAN ARCHIVES – “CONFESSIONS/BLACK VIVALDI SONATA”

Sudan Archives already released “Confessions” off her highly anticipated debut album Athena (due 11/1 via Stones Throw), and now she has released a video for the song, which also features elements of another new song, “Black Vivaldi Sonata.” It’s keeping our hopes high for this album, and the video is pretty awesome too.

BATTLES – “A LOOP SO NICE THEY PLAYED IT TWICE” (ft. XENIA RUBINOS)

Battles have shared a new double single from their upcoming album, and one of the songs features the great Xenia Rubinos. You can read more about it here.

SAUDADE – “CRISIS”

Saudade, the music collective that includes Chino Moreno (Deftones), Dr. Know (Bad Brains), Mackie Jayson (Cro-Mags), John Medeski, Robert Thomas Jr. (Weather Report), frequent Chino collaborator Chuck Doom, and more, have signed to Sargent House and their first release for the label will be the Shadows & Light / Sanctuary Dub EP. It includes recent single “Shadows & Light” (which features vocals by Chino and Chelsea Wolfe) and the just-released instrumental “Crisis.” You can read more here.

THE NIGHT WATCH – “MENDOZA”

Folk/prog/metal/etc band The Night Watch — whose lineup includes Musk Ox members Evan Runge and Nathanael Larochette (the latter of whom is also an Agalloch collaborator — are releasing a new album, and you can hear lead single “Mendoza” now and read more about the project here.

SHARON VAN ETTEN – “SEVENTEEN” FEAT. NORAH JONES

Sharon Van Etten shared an alternate, “country” take on “Seventeen” from her excellent 2019 album Remind Me Tomorrow, featuring Norah Jones, which we wrote more about here.

JEFF LYNNE’S ELO – “FROM OUT OF NOWHERE”

Back in 2015, Jeff Lynne released his first ELO album in 14 years. He’s now back, in much quicker fashion, with its follow-up, From Out of Nowhere, which will be out November 1. He’s shared the title track which is undeniable ELO.
