15 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

ANGEL OLSEN – “ALL MIRRORS”

Angel Olsen has finally announced a followup to her great 2016 album MY WOMAN, and lead single/title track “All Mirrors” is a very welcome return that already has us excited to hear more. Read more about the new album here.

CHANNEL TRES – “BLACK MOSES” (ft. JPEGMAFIA)

Channel Tres, who is touring with Toro y Moi this year, is releasing his Black Moses EP on August 16 via GODMODE. He has now shared the dark, bass-heavy title track which effectively pairs Channel Tres with avant-rapper JPEGMAFIA.

IGGY POP – “JAMES BOND” (FT. FAITH VERN of PINS)

Iggy Pop will release new album, Free, on September 6 and he’s just shared the kinda surfy, kinda jazzy “James Bond” which features backing vocals from Faith Vern of PINS. “I’ve never had more fun singing a lyric,” says Iggy. “Faith’s reading is so loaded, and Leron [Thomas]’s production and trumpet along with the band swings like crazy.”

THE FUTUREHEADS – “LISTEN, LITTLE MAN”

The Futureheads are back with Power, their first proper album in nine years, in a month and they’ve just shared a second song from it. With its dense harmonies and angular arrangements, “Listen, Little Man” is instantly recognizable as a Futureheads song with an insanely catchy “oh oh oh” hook. “It has a perfect balance between lightheartedness and menace which marries very well with the concept of the song,” says vocalist/guitarist Barry Hyde who named the song after a book by controversial therapist Wilhelm Reich. “Playing with the micro and the macro and highlighting the insanity that the human race is sometimes gripped by!”

GHOSTFACE KILLAH – “PARTY OVER HERE”

Here’s another highly cinematic video from Ghostface, though unlike “Conditioning” which played out like a heist thriller, “Party Over Here” is just a good time. His new solo album, Ghostface Killahs, is out in August.

KAONASHI – “MY 5-YEAR PLAN” (VIDEO)

Proggy, mathy Philly post-hardcore band Kaonashi have signed to Equal Vision, and they’re celebrating the announcement of the signing with a new video for “My 5-Year Plan” off their self-released 2018 EP Why Did You Do It?. “Ever since we started this band, our goal was to sign to Equal Vision Records. Their sound and style is what Kaonashi was based off of. We still can’t believe it,” the band says, and if you like classic Equal Vision stuff (like Converge, Hope Conspiracy, Fall of Troy, early Coheed, etc), you’ll probably like this too. Also catch the band on tour this year.

DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE – “KIDS IN ’99”

Recent Chance the Rapper collaborators Death Cab for Cutie have announced The Blue EP, which they describe as “a collection of five new tracks that share a similar conception but different births.” It’s due out September 6, and first single “Kids in ’99” is a tribute to three people who died during the Olympic Pipeline explosion in Bellingham, WA in June of 1999. “The Olympic Pipeline explosion in 1999 was a tragedy that really affected me while we were living in Bellingham,” Benjamin Gibbard says. “After all these years I felt it was worthy of its own folk song.”

COFFINS – “FORGOTTEN CEMETERY”

Tokyo death-doomers Coffins are releasing their new album Beyond The Circular Demise on September 20 via Relapse, and the first single is the absurdly heavy “Forgotten Cemetery.”

THE KINKS – “THE FUTURE”

There’s an enormous deluxe box set for The Kinks’ Arthur on the way for its 50th anniversary, and among its 88 songs is this unreleased “doo-wop” song, “The Future.”

LONG BEARD – “MEANS TO ME”

Leslie Bear is releasing her second album as Long Beard, Means to Me, due out September 13 via Double Double Whammy. She co-produced it with Craig Hendrix of Japanese Breakfast, whose sound the dreamy, shoegazey new title track feels related to.

OPERATOR MUSIC BAND – “MONDO”

Brooklyn’s Operator Music Band have shared another song from their upcoming Duo Duo album that’s out in September. Set to percolating percussion, “Mondo” is driving disco, funky in a krautrock way — tipping its hat to Kraftwerk at one point — and very infectious.

SEEYOUSPACECOWBOY – “ARMED WITH THEIR TEETH”

Rising math/sasscore band SeeYouSpaceCowboy have announced their first proper full-length and shared the lead single, and you can read more about it here.

SIGNALS MIDWEST – PIN (EP STREAM)

Ohio/Philly/Pittsburgh emo band Signals Midwest’s first release in three years, the Pin EP, comes out this week, and you can stream it now and read more about it here.

ROYAL TRUX – “SUBURBAN JUNKIE LADY” (ARIEL PINK REMIX)

Royal Trux have an EP of Ariel Pink remixes on the way. On “Suburban Junkie Lady,” Pink strips away much of the original’s scuzz and adds synthesizers, turning it more into an ’80s ballad you could almost imagine Kim Carnes singing — which is just what you’d expect him to do.

GRLWOOD – “I HATE MY MOM”

Two-piece “scream-pop” band GRLwood are releasing a new album this Friday, and while you wait for the whole thing, lead single “I Hate My Mom” is streaming now. Read more here.
