15 New Songs Out Today

Rosalía at Webster Hall
Rosalía at Webster Hall (more by Amanda Hatfield)

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

SONDRE LERCHE – “YOU ARE NOT WHO I THOUGHT I WAS”

Norway’s Sondre Lerche will release his new album Patience on June 5. This is his first album since leaving NYC for sunny Los Angeles, but the record was mostly made in his home country and ambient music served as one of its chief inspirations. “Ever since Pleasure came out in 2017, I’ve been running a lot, and I listen to mainly abstract music that helps me lose sense of time and structure when I run, what I refer to as ‘patient music,'” Lerche says. “Performing the flamboyant and intense Pleasure show 140 times in one year got me into athleticism, and made me passionate about running. Before this, I never did anything remotely athletic in my life. After Pleasure I felt like slowing down everything in my life. I stopped touring for the first time since I was 18. I moved to LA, and I just focused on writing. I needed to make soothing music.” That said this first single is a typically bouncy, jazzy Lerche creation.

ROSALÍA – “DOLERME”

Rosalía released a new single, “Juro Que,” in January, and now she’s shared her second track of the year. This one is more pop-oriented, with a little vocoder to give the vocals an alien feel.

BICEP – “ATLAS”

Irish electronic duo Bicep are back with a new single, “Atlas,” that matches squelchy techno with widescreen, ambient atmosphere. “It would’ve been unthinkable to foresee the circumstances this track would be released in when we were making it,” says Bicep’s Matt & Andy. “Our frame of mind was so positive then, fresh off the back of our live tour, full of excitement for the next phase. ‘Atlas’ was our attempt at summing up some of the euphoric moments we experienced on that tour across those two years. It feels like those moments are very far away for all of us right now, but we hope this serves as some form of distraction amidst all this chaos.”

MAN MAN – “FUTURE PEG”

Now signed to Sub Pop, Man Man are set to release new album Dream Hunting in the Valley of the In-Between on May 1. They’ve just shared a new single from it, “Future Pet,” a gregarious bit of indie pop whose video explores the idea of dream hunting – in this case trying to rent a studio, which results in a few fantastical outcomes.

JORDANA – “SWAY”

Witchita, Kansas’ Jordana, previously Jordana Nye, is releasing an expanded and remastered version of her 2019 album Classical Notions Of Happiness, and she’s shared another of its new tracks, “Sway,” a silky-smooth jam. “‘Sway’ is a love song about a loss for words,” she says, “where instead of speaking, a single, shameless movement, a sway, takes place in its absence.”

WARM DIGITS FT. THE ORIELLES

Here’s another of the many collaborations featured on duo Warm Digits new album Flight of Ideas. This one features The Orielles, whose danceable, post-punk influenced pop works well with Warm Digits’ M.O.

JACKIE LYNN – “DREAM ST.”

“I first wrote ‘Dream St. as an ode to my favorite street in Chicago, Ogden Drive,” says Haley Fohr (Circuits des Yeux) of this string-laden new single from her group Jackie Lynn (which also features all three members of Bitchin Bajas). “It is one of the few streets in the city that runs on a diagonal. On a good day you can catch a nice steady flow and shave minutes off of your commute. It also used to be a part of Route 66. I can’t help but wonder if my very distinct attraction to the flow of Ogden isn’t correlated to the deep historic stream that has been going down on that specific stretch of land for decades.” Jackie Lynn’s new album, Jacqueline, is out April 10 via Drag City.

SARAH JAROSZ – “JOHNNY”

Sarah Jarosz will release her new album World on the Ground on June 5 via Rounder. The record, which she made with producer John Leventhal (Elvis Costello, Rosanne Cash), explores “the tension and inertia of small-town living, the push/pull between the desire for escape and the ease of staying put.” First single “Johnny” is a lovely piece of literate folk pop.

MUZZ – “BROKEN TAMBOURINE”

Muzz, the new collaboration between Paul Banks (Interpol), Josh Kaufman (Bonny Light Horseman), and Matt Barrick (Jonathan Fire*Eater/The Walkmen/Fleet Foxes), shared the song “Bad Feeling” a couple weeks back and have now released their first official single (and are officially signed to Matador).

DIRTY PROJECTORS – “SEARCH FOR LIFE”

Dirty Projectors have a new EP, Windows Open, out on Friday, and they’ve shared a new single, “Search for Life,” off of it, which we wrote more about here.

THE RUINS OF BEVERAST – “SILHOUETTES OF DEATH’S GRACE”

German black/doom metallers The Ruins Of Beverast are streaming a new 10-minute track from their upcoming split EP with Mourning Beloveth, Don’t Walk On The Mass Graves, due this Friday, March 27 via Ván Records. It’s gloomy and depressive and atmospheric but still manages to have a jagged edge.

TWITCHING TONGUES – “NECROMANTICAL SCREAMS” (CELTIC FROST COVER)

Not only did Twitching Tongues vocalist Colin Young spearhead the video of hardcore vocalists singing Smash Mouth’s “All Star” to parody the celebrity “Imagine” video, the band also just released this cover of Celtic Frost’s “Necomantical Screams.” Twitching Tongues’ version is a little doomier and a little more modern-sounding; they make it their own while keeping the general vibe of the original intact.

BRIGHT EYES – “PERSONA NON GRATA”

The first Bright Eyes single in nine years has arrived. Read more about it here.

SQUID – “SLUDGE”

UK art punks Squid signed to Warp and you can read more about their first single for the label here.

NOUS – “NINTHS”

Christopher Bono‘s avant-garde/contemporary classical project NOUS — which also includes Greg Fox (ex-Liturgy, Ex Eyes, etc), Shahzad Ismaily (Ceramic Dog, Secret Chiefs 3, Ex Eye, etc), Thor Harris (Swans, Shearwater, etc), and Grey Mcmurray (itsnotyouitsme, So Percussion, etc) — are releasing a new album and you can read more about lead single “Ninths” here.
