16 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

KALI UCHIS – “SOLITA”

Kali Uchis has released a new bilingual song produced by Tainy, whose known for work with Bad Bunny, J Balvin, and others. “This song is about healing, freedom and embracing the mixed emotions that come with that. I hope my fans feel sexy when they listen to it. I’m so excited to share more,” Kali says.

MADISON MCFERRIN – YOU + I (EP STREAM)

Madison McFerrin returns today with the You + I EP, which revisits her a cappella roots on the brief intro track and then dives into five tracks of chilled-out, jazzy soul. She celebrates with a Brooklyn release show at Baby’s All Right tonight (12/4).

SMOKE FAIRIES – “ELEVATOR”

Smoke Fairies have gradually been moving from their folk roots in a heavier, riffier direction, and new single “Elevator” is perhaps the closest they’ve come to stoner metal yet. It’s the third single off their upcoming Phil Ek-produced album Darkness Brings The Wonders Home (due January 31 via Year Seven Records), following “Disconnect” and “Out of the Woods,” and if you dig anything from ’70s Jethro Tull to late ’00s Decemberists to modern folky metal like SubRosa, this is worth a spin.

THE RENTALS – “9TH CONFIGURATION” (ft. SCHOOL OF SEVEN BELLS’ ALEJANDRA DEHEZA

The Rentals have shared the third song off their ambitious, outer space-themed double album Q36, which main member Matt Sharp made with Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Nick Zinner on guitar, The Killers’ Ronnie Vannucci on drums, and Flaming Lips collaborator Dave Fridmann as mixing engineer. “9th Configuration” is a soaring, jangly dose of acoustic psych-pop with a string section and some gorgeous guest vocals from School of Seven Bells’ Alejandra Deheza.

LOVING – “LATELY IN ANOTHER TIME”

Victoria, BC’s Loving announced their debut LP, If I Am Only My Thoughts, due out on January 31 via Last Gang Records. They’ve shared its first single, “Lately In Another Time,” a meandering folk tune with hints of psychedelica. “There isn’t a single narrative driving this album,” the band’s Jesse Henderson says, “but we do linger on some basic human problems: confusion in the face of a desire for self-knowledge and belonging, a struggle for meaning that is circular and sometimes seemingly endless.”

REGARDE LES HOMMES TOMBER – “A NEW ORDER”

French black metallers Regarde Les Hommes Tomber will release their new album Ascension on February 28 via Season of Mist and perform the album in full at Roadburn 2020. The first taste of the album is out in the form of the pulverizing, eight-minute “A New Order.”

SPOON – “IS THIS THE LAST TIME?”

Spoon have been digging through their archives lately, offering up demos and rare tracks. Slow-burner “Is This The Last Time?” was originally the b-side to the 2002 “Someone Something” 7″ from 2002, and has just made its debut on streaming services.

BILL FAY – “LOVE WILL REMAIN”

Bill Fay’s new album, Countless Branches, is out in January and he’s just shared a second track from it. “Love Will Remain” is a delicately beautiful piano ballad, simple but elegant, with some lovely touches of horn.

SOCCER MOMMY – “FEED”

A new film adaptation of The Turn of the Screw directed by Floria Sigismondi, The Turning, arrives at theaters in January, and the soundtrack has a stacked list of contributors too. We’ve already heard Courtney Love’s contribution, and here’s Soccer Mommy’s, which sounds very different from her recent single “yellow is the color of her eyes.”

WISH YOU WERE HERE – “WITHOUT YOU” (SPOOKY BLACK COVER)

Wish You Were Here is the Bon Iver-ish solo project of Jesse Barnett, frontman of metalcore/hardcore band Stick To Your Guns, and he has released a cover of Spooky Black’s chillwavey emo-trap song “Without You” and turned it into the same kind of atmospheric indie folk as his own debut album.

CARIBOU – “YOU AND I”

“‘You and I’ was one of the first tracks on the album that I started, and one of the last tracks I finished; it existed in some form or other throughout the whole arc of making the record,” Caribou’s Dan Snaith says of the new single from his forthcoming album, Suddenly. “It also captures a lot of what the record, and the title of the album, are about – the track changes suddenly and unpredictably, and it is about a change in my life that happened out of the blue.”

BE WELL (mem BANE, DARKEST HOUR, FAIRWEATHER, CONVERGE, BATTERY) – “STRENGTH FOR BREATH” & “FROZEN”

Be Well is a new band from some very familiar faces, including Peter Tsouras (Guitar) and Shane Johnson (Drums) from Fairweather, Mike Schleibaum (guitar) of Darkest Hour, and Aaron Dalbec (Bass) of Bane and Converge, and lead vocals from Battery frontman Brian McTernan, who’s also well known for producing albums by all of the aforementioned bands and many others. Their first release is a self-titled two-song 7″ on Equal Vision, which you can read more about here.

POLICA – “FORGET ME NOW”

Poliça have a new album, When We Stay Alive, due out in January, and they’ve shared a second single from it, the spritely electro-pop track “Forget Me Now.”

CRITERIA – “AGITATE RESUSCITATE”

Criteria (ex-Cursive) are releasing their first album in 15 years on Cursive’s label this January, and you can read more about lead single “Agitate Resuscitate” here.

THE JAMES HUNTER SIX – “I CAN CHANGE YOUR MIND”

Long-running British soul revivalist James Hunter is releasing a new James Hunter Six album, Nick of Time, on March 6 via Daptone, and you can read more about lead single “I Can Change Your Mind” here.

JEHNNY BETH (SAVAGES) – “I’M THE MAN” VIDEO

Jehnny Beth of Savages has made a video for “I’m The Man,” her contribution to the Peaky Blinders soundtrack. Directed by Anthony Byrne, who also directed all six episodes of Peaky Blinders’ new season, it’s a one-shot tour-de-force with Jehnny Beth front and center in an attitude-heavy performance. You really don’t see music videos like this for indie artists much anymore.
