16 New Songs Out Today
So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…
BAXTER DURY - "I'M NOT YOUR DOG"
Baxter Dury's sixth album, The Night Chancers (one of our Anticipated Albums of 2020), is out in March and it's shaping up to be a bit different than his last three records (which Baxter says were all of a piece). You can feel that difference on the album's opening track, "I'm Not Your Dog," which glides along an electro pulse with Baxter's marble-mouthed spoken lines mingling with Madeline's Hart's effervescent sung backing vocals. Meanwhile, Tom Haines' gorgeously photographed "oner" video finds Baxter awaking on a beach after an especially a rough night.
DROPKICK MURPHYS - "SMASH SHIT UP" & "THE BONNY" (GERRY CINNAMON COVER)
Boston Celtic punk lifers Dropkick Murphys will release a new album this fall, but first they released the new single "Smash Shit Up" and its B-side, a cover of Scottish singer/songwriter Gerry Cinnamon's 2019 song "The Bonny." Both songs pretty much sound like classic Murphys, and if you need that itch scratched, this band continues to deliver. They also announced openers for their St. Patrick's Day Boston Blowout run, including Rancid's Lars Frederiksen and The Sex Pistols' Glen Matlock on night one, Lars' band The Old Firm Casuals on nights two to four, and more.
ROZWELL KID - "ONLY TIME" (ENYA COVER)
Rozwell Kid have taken Enya's 2000 classic "Only Time" and turned it into something that sounds like Weezer. Pretty cool!
A BOOGIE WIT DA HOODIE - "KING OF MY CITY"
Bronx sing-rapper A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie is releasing a new album, Artist 2.0, and its newest single is typically catchy and melancholic "King of My City."
BILL WARD BAND - "POWDER ON THE MOON"
Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward has released a new solo single, and this one finds him exploring dramatic, suspenseful prog rock.
EYES WITHOUT A FACE - "THE GRIFT"
Eyes Without A Face is a new band with members of Vancouver black metal band Seer and Vancouver alt-pop band Blonde Diamond, and their debut single is "The Grift," which finds the band exploring gothy, '80s-style synthpop.
BAT FOR LASHES - "THE BOYS OF SUMMER" (DON HENLEY COVER)
Bat for Lashes just embarked on a North American tour supporting her most recent album, 2019's Lost Girls. She played some shows supporting the album in London in November, and from those shows comes the material for her new live EP, The Boys of Summer. Its title track is a lovely, stripped down cover of the Don Henley classic.
LIVING GATE (mem OATHBREAKER, YOB) - "LIVING GATE"
Living Gate is a new band from Lennart Bossu, Levy Seynaeve, and Wim Sreppoc (all three of whom are in Oathbreaker, the former two of which are in Amenra, and the latter two of which are in Weigedood) and YOB bassist Aaron Rieseberg, and their debut EP Deathlust is coming this May. The eponymous lead single is out now, and it finds these guys going in a more death metal direction than their more well-known projects. They do it well.
RUSTIN MAN - "JACKIE'S ROOM"
SOLOTHUS - "THE WATCHER"
Finnish death-doomers Solothus are releasing their third album and first for 20 Buck Spin, Realm Of Ash And Blood, on March 27 via their new label home. The first single is the monstrous "The Watcher."
LOOSE FIT - "PULL THE LEVER"
Sydney, Australia's Loose Fit make taut post-punk punctuated by melodic, flinty bass and Anna Langdon's attitude-heavy vocals. They've signed to Fatcat and will release a self-titled EP on April 3. "Pull the Lever" is the first single which the band says "was probably the first song we wrote where we felt we had kinda cracked open the 'Loose Fit sound' and found out what it was. We were trying to toe the line between moodiness and danceability." Langdon adds, "Apps on our phones are designed like slot machines. It's addictive and exciting to play a dating app. Refreshing or swiping is like pulling the lever of a slot machine to see what you got. That design is no accident in an attention economy."
THE LOVELY EGGS - "THIS DECISION"
UK DIY duo The Lovely Eggs will release new album I Am Moron on April 3 via Egg Records. They made the record in upstate NY with Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, MGMT). The first single is firey ripper "This Decision" which rails against "greed and mindless consumerism" and you can watch the video here:
SISTER WIVES - GWELER EIN GOFID
Sister Wives hail from Sheffield, UK who make synthy, post-punky sysch sung in a mix of English and Welsh tongue. Their debut EP, Gweler Ein Gofid ("See My Grief"), is dark and mossy and quite promising.
MIKE CRAIN - "WAIT, WHAT?"
Mike Crain of Dead Cross, Retox, and more recently Cunts is sadly battling cancer, but fortunately that’s not stopping him from making new music. He’s got his first-ever solo EP, which is self-titled, coming March 13 via his own Radical Guy Recordings, and you can read more about the lead single here.
SAVAK - "LISTENING"
Brooklyn's SAVAK will release their fourth album, Rotting Teeth in the Horse’s Mouth, and the first single is a strident, hooky punk number with real swagger.
