Spirit Possession

17 New Metal & Hardcore Songs Out This Week

This week in heavy, we got the debut album from Chelsea Wolfe’s new project Mrs. Piss and the rippin’ new Xibalba album (both of which I wrote about in Notable Releases), and we also got new albums from Brant Bjork, Lesser Glow, and Many Blessings. On top of that, we got new singles from Necrot, Ulthar, Spirit Possession, Living Gate, Valkyrie, Lamb of God (ft. Testament’s Chuck Billy), Wino, Second Arrows (mem Deadguy, ex-Every Time I Die, etc), Take Offense, -(16)-, and more. Read on for all the metal and hardcore we posted this week…

NECROT – “STENCH OF DECAY”

Bay Area death metallers Necrot have detailed their anticipated new album Mortal and released this new song, which you can read more about here.

ULTHAR – “FURNACE HIBERNATION”

Ulthar, who hail from the same scene as Necrot (both of whom share members with Vastum) also have a new song out today. Read more here.

SPIRIT POSSESSION – “SPIRIT POSSESSION”

Spirit Possession is the black metal duo of vocalist/guitarist S. Peacock (Ulthar, Mastery, Pandiscordin Necrogenesis) and A. Spungin (Ormus, Tarus) on drums and handmade synthesizers, and their self-titled debut LP comes out on July 24 via Profound Lore. “Spirit Possession” is also the name of the album’s lead single, which is raw and filthy and just a little bit melodic too.

LIVING GATE – “THE DELUSION OF CONSCIOUSNESS”

Living Gate, the new death metal band of Aaron Rieseberg (YOB), Lennart Bossu (Oathbreaker, Amenra), Wim Coppers (Oathbreaker, Wiegedood) and Levy Seynaeve (Amenra, Wiegedood), have dropped another venom-spewer from their upcoming self-titled debut EP, due 6/12 via Relapse.

VALKYRIE – “FEELING SO LOW”

Valkyrie, the Virginia heavy rock band led by former Baroness member Pete Adams and his brother Jake, have announced their first album in five years and first since Pete left Baroness. Fear comes out July 24 via Relapse, and first single “Feeling So Low” finds the Adams’ brothers dual riffing sounding as badass as ever. More info here.

LAMB OF GOD – “ROUTES” (ft. TESTAMENT’S CHUCK BILLY)

Lamb of God have released a thrashy new song inspired by the No DAPL movement, and it features guest vocals by thrash legend Chuck Billy, who is of Pomo Native American heritage. “It was imperative for me to have a Native voice represented on the song,” said Randy Blythe, and Chuck said “it was a great honor as a proud Pomo Native American to be asked by Lamb of God to do some guest vocals on this song.” Read more here.

WINO – “THE SONG’S AT THE BOTTOM OF THE BOTTLE”

Heavy metal legend Scott “Wino” Weinrich” (of Saint Vitus, The Obsessed, and more) is releasing a new acoustic solo album in June, and we premiered this new song from it today. Read more about the song, and read Wino discussing the music that influenced his new album (and telling all kinds of stories about his early years) here.

SECOND ARROWS – “GALACTIC”

Second Arrows, the new-ish NY/NJ hardcore/metalcore band with current and former members of Deadguy, Every Time I Die, Nora, Ensign, and The Banner, have released the lead single off their upcoming debut album. Read more here.

TAKE OFFENSE – CAUSE & EFFECT EP

Crossover thrashers Take Offense dropped a new EP with three songs that didn’t make the cut for last year’s Keep an Eye Out. Read more here.

-(16)- “SADLANDS”

Sludge vets -(16)- have shared another song off their upcoming album Lifespan of a Moth. This one’s more of a slow-burner compared to this band’s usual ragers, and they’re good at this kinda thing too.

PANOPTICON – “SNOW BURDENED BRANCHES” (LIVE)

Austin Lunn’s black metal/folk project Panopticon;’s live shows were pretty rare in the pre-pandemic days (and obviously nonexistent now), but Austin got a full band together a few times including at 2018’s Migration Fest, which was recorded for the upcoming live album Live Migration, due June 19 via Bindrune Recordings. Here’s the first taste, which shows off Panopticon’s ability to sound as powerful on stage as Austin does in studio.

ONSLAUGHT – “RELIGIOUSUICIDE”

Onslaught are one of the original UK thrash bands, and if you haven’t listened to their ’80s classics like Power From Hell or The Force in a while (or ever), you should break those out. They hold up. These days, their only original member is guitarist Nige Rockett (current vocalist Dave Garnett actually joined this year, and two other members joined in 2018), and this current lineup of the band is releasing its first album, Generation Antichrist, on August 7 via AFM Records. New single “Religiousuicide” isn’t as purely evil as the band’s classics, but all things considered, it’s not bad at all.

LIFE FORCE – “OUT FRONT” (ft. TIM MCMAHON)

Life Force (a new-ish band led by Matt Fletcher of Shai Hulud and Zombie Apocalypse) are prepping Hope and Defiance for New Age Records, and this absolute ripper of a new single features Tim McMahon of Mouthpiece.

HAIL SPIRIT NOIR – “CROSSROADS”

Psych/prog metallers Hail Spirit Noir are releasing their new album Eden In Reverse on June 19 via Agonia Records, and this new single (which features Lars Nedland of Solefald and Borknagar) is a trippy, riffy, shapeshifting, promising taste.

VILE CREATURE – “WHEN THE PATH IS UNCLEAR”

Canadian black/sludge two-piece Vile Creature have shared the 11-minute second single off their upcoming Glory! Glory! Apathy Took Helm!. Sonically, it’s a glacial paced trek through noisy sludge, and lyrically, guitarist/vocalist KW Campol tells Decibel that “the lyrical content of Glory! Glory! Apathy Took Helm is very much based in… combating the ideas of apathy and nihilism taking over your life and finding ways to maneuver through that both personally and politically. There’s very little divide between the two of those.”

THE SOFT PINK TRUTH – AM I FREE TO GO? (CRUST PUNK COVERS)

Matmos’ Drew Daniel already released his new Soft Pink Truth album Shall We Go On Sinning So That Grace May Increase? earlier this year, and now he followed it with this covers album of crust punk songs, which he turns into electronic songs. “I find these songs and the artists that sang them inspiring: they are direct, angry and demanding. I don’t cover them out of mockery or satire. I love these songs and wanted to play them and play with them. It’s as simple as that,” he writes.

Drew also adds that the album is name-your-price and “all profits after paying out due/requested royalties from the original artists will go to the International Anti-Fascist Legal Defence Fund, which assists people all around the world with the legal repercussions of protesting fascism.”

UNDER GLASS – INSIDE A SHRINKING SPIRAL

Under Glass dropped this new LP on Middle-Man Records, and if you like your screamo on the raw, chaotic, blackened side, check this one out. It’s a rager.
