Hot Girl Summer

17 New Rap Songs Out This Week

In addition to the official song of the hot girl summer, this week gave us a new G&D (aka Georgia Anne Muldrow & Dudley Perkins) album (which I reviewed for Notable Releases), and new singles by SiR/Kendrick Lamar, Brockhampton, Cousin Stizz/Freddie Gibbs, Pivot Gang, CupcakKe, and more. Read on for all the hip hop we posted on BV this week…

MEGAN THEE STALLION – “HOT GIRL SUMMER” (ft. NICKI MINAJ & TY DOLLA $IGN)

Megan Thee Stallion is responsible for the whole “hot girl summer” thing, and now she has teamed with Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign for a song called “Hot Girl Summer.” Juicy J produced it, and it samples City Girls’ “Act Up.” You can read more about it here.

SIR – “HAIR DOWN” (ft. KENDRICK LAMAR)

R&B/soul singer SiR is releasing his new album Chasing Summer on August 30 via Top Dawg Entertainment/RCA, and he tapped his TDE labelmate Kendrick Lamar for its new single “Hair Down.” It’s a smooth, laid-back song, and Kendrick sounds as great as ever on it.

BROCKHAMPTON – “IF YOU PRAY RIGHT”

Brockhampton have shared a second single off their upcoming album GINGER, which is “coming soon.” The group’s art-rap rhymes are in fine form and delivered over a psychedelic, marching band-infused beat. The video stars a marching band too.

COUSIN STIZZ – “TOAST 2 THAT” (ft. FREDDIE GIBBS)

Boston rapper Cousin Stizz’s anticipated new album Trying to Find My Next Thrill comes out next week, and now he has shared the song featuring Freddie Gibbs. Gibbs has been on fire lately and this song is no exception, but Stizz has no trouble holding his own next to Gibbs. It’s the best song released from the new album yet.

PIVOT GANG – “SOHO FREESTYLE” (ft. KOTA THE FRIEND) & “HOUDINI” (ft. THEMIND)

Chicago rap group Pivot Gang, who count Saba as a member, released their very good new album You Can’t Sit With Us this year and now they’re back with two new singles. One features fellow Chicago rap scene regular theMIND and the other features rising NYC rapper Kota The Friend, and both remind you that both Saba and Pivot Gang are on fire right now.

JIDENNA – “SOU SOU” & “ZODI” (ft. MR EAZI)

Following “Tribe” and “Sufi Woman,” Jidenna shared two more songs off his upcoming album 85 To Africa. “Sou Sou” is a hip hop banger and “Zodi” sees him channelling Afro-fusion with help from Nigerian singer Mr. Eazi.

POWERS PLEASANT – “CAN’T FUCC WIT IT” (ft. BUDDY & G PERICO)

Pro Era and Beast Coast member Powers Pleasant is releasing his debut album Life is Beautiful on August 23 via Commission Music, and the East Coast producer tapped two great West Coast rappers for his new single, “Can’t Fucc Wit It.”

G PERICO – “BIG RACCS” (ft. SONNY DIGITAL)

Speaking of G Perico, he’s also got a new project on the way, Ten Eight, due August 23 via So Way Out, and new single “Big Raccs” is exactly the kind of West Coast bounce he does best.

BLUEFACE – DIRT BAG EP

Blueface, the fast-riding rapper with the weird flow, is back with his first project of 2019, the Dirt Bag EP, out now on Cash Money. Guests include Offset, The Game, Mozzy, Lil Pump, and Rich The Kid, and it seems like these eight songs have plenty more of the pop appeal of “Thotiana” that made Blueface famous.

SNOOP DOGG – “LET BYGYONES BE BYGONES”

Snoop Dogg talks about reconciling with Suge Knight on “Let Bygones Be Bygones,” the latest single off his upcoming album I Wanna Thank Me (due August 16 via Doggystyle Records).

BAS – “JOLLOF RICE” (ft. EARTHGANG)

Dreamville rapper Bas is back with a new EP, Spilled Milk 1. It features his great recent JID collab “Fried Rice,” as well as three other songs, and the best one is opener “Jollof Rice,” which features another great Dreamville act, EarthGang.

LIL YACHTY & TEE GRIZZLEY – “ONCE AGAIN”

Another song is out from the upcoming Quality Control comp, this one from Lil Yachty and Tee Grizzley. Grizzley goes hard as ever on this, and the usually softer Yachty leaves his comfort zone to match Grizzley’s intensity.

MARY J BLIGE – “KNOW”

“When you hear the word ‘queen,’ you think of a woman getting everything she wants, but it’s not like that at all,” Mary J Blige says in the intro to her new ode to women, “Know.” “See, being a ruler means sacrifice. Most of the time, you get less than what you give. So every woman and mother in the world is a queen, because she sacrificed so much.” The song’s powerful message is matched by Mary J’s powerhouse pipes.

CUPCAKKE – “WHOREGASM”

CupcakKe is one of the best new rappers around, and though she’s got a reputation for making raunchy music, she’s also a multi-faceted artist who does much more than that. This song, though, is very much that.

TAYLOR MCFERRIN – “LOVE AND DISTANCE”

Taylor McFerrin has released a third single off his upcoming album Love’s Last Chance, and it’s a gorgeous dose of jazzy, psychedelic neo-soul.
