17 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

MURA MASA – “NO HOPE GENERATION”

Mura Masa has announced his sophomore album, R.Y.C (Raw Youth Collage), due January 17 via Polydor/Anchor Point. It features his recent Clairo collaboration; collaborations with slowthai (who made his great “Doorman” with Mura Masa), Tirzah, Georgia, Wolf Alice’s Ellie Rowsell, and more; and the just-released “No Hope Generation” which kinda finds Mura Masa embracing emo rap.

MEGAN THEE STALLION x VICKEELO – “RIDE OR DIE”

Megan Thee Stallion’s song from the Queen & Slim soundtrack is here. After the incredible year she’s already had, she didn’t have to go this hard, but she went ahead and did anyway.

PUSHA T & SWIZZ BEATZ – “NO PATIENCE”

More songs are out from the Godfather of Harlem soundtrack, including Pusha T and Swizz Beatz’s “No Patience,” which is another late-career winner from Push.

DAVE EAST – “GODFATHER 4” (ft. NAS)

Unrelated to Godfather of Harlem is this song called “Godfather 4” from Harlem rapper Dave East. It’s the latest single off Dave’s upcoming album Survival, and it features one of his biggest influences, Nas. Nas is fully in his comfort zone here, and Dave East holds his own next to the legend.

LIZZO FEAT. ARIANA GRANDE – “GOOD AS HELL (REMIX)”

Like “Truth Hurts,” “Good As Hell” is another song Lizzo released a few years ago that turned into a sleeper hit during what has been Lizzo’s most massive year yet. She’s capitalizing on the track’s newfound success with this remix featuring Ariana Grande, whose vocal additions are a nice added touch to the already-inspiring song.

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN – “RHINESTONE COWBOY” (GLEN CAMPBELL COVER)

Bruce Springsteen premiered his new film Western Stars this week, which showcases him performing his recent album of the same name with the E Street Band at his hometown of Colts Neck, NJ. The Boss is promoting the film with an official soundtrack, which ends with this cover of Glen Campbell’s 1975 hit, flourishing string sections intact. It’s a cinematic cover fit for the end of a movie as the credits roll, so it’s fitting Bruce put this song last.

R.E.M. – “UPTEMPO MO DISTORTION”

R.E.M.’s 25th anniversary edition of Monster is out next week and they’ve just shared one of the bonus cuts, this never-before-heard instrumental demo. “Uptempo Mo Distortion” has the fuzzpedal sonics much of Monster has but also a bit of the band’s early jangly side too.

OTOBOKE BEAVER – “YOBANTOITE MOJO”

Japanese punks Otoboke Beaver released ITEKOMA HITS back in April, and now they’re back with an infectious, rowdy new single, which was commissioned for the opening theme of new Japanese television drama series “Susumu Inomata and 8 Mojo.”

JONATHAN FIRE*EATER – “IN THE HEAD”

Third Man’s reissue of influential NYC band Jonathan Fire*Eater’s album Tremble Under Boom Lights is out today and includes a few bonus tracks, like previously unreleased song, “In the Head.” You can stream that and they whole reissue:

WALTER MARTIN – “OCTOBER”

Meanwhile, former Jonathan Fire*Eater (and Walkmen) member Walter Martin gets in the spirit of the month, with this first taste of his new solo album due out early next year. “The trees have gone bald / Guess the world is getting older / October is here.”

KEATON HENSON – “BREATHING OUT”

British singer and songwriter Keaton Henson’s classical album Six Lethargies came out today. The final piece is the sublimely melancholy, eighteen minute-long “Breathing Out.”

RUFUS WAINWRIGHT – “TROUBLE IN PARADISE”

Rufus Wainwright teams with acclaimed producer Mitchell Froom (Los Lobos, Crowded House, Suzanne Vega) for this single he’s calling his first pop release since 2012’s Out of the Game. “Trouble In Paradise” is about the fashion world but also applies to the state of the planet,” says Rufus, adding that it’s got “a sense of sophistication and an animalistic instinct.” Stay tuned for more in 2020.

EL PERRO DEL MAR – “PLEASE STAY’ (BURT BACHARACH COVER)

Sweden’s El Perro Del Mar has covered Burt Bacharach’s “Please Stay,” a song that has been recorded by everyone from The Drifters to Elvis Costello and beyond. EPDM brings a little of her gloomy romance to it and her version will be a part of a new dance performance piece debuting at Stockholm’s Royal Dramatic Theatre in November and December. “”‘Please stay’ by Burt Bacharach has been made in different versions but my favorite by far is the one produced by pioneer producer Joe Meek with The Cryin’ Shames from 1966. This version is complete magic,” she says. “It’s been on my mind for some time and when working on this album that’s all on dark matters I came to think about what would happen to the song if its original meaning of love and heartbreak was to be about death and the pleadings of having someone not die or return from the dead.”

AJ TRACEY – “FLOSS” (ft. MOSTACK & NOT3S)

Rising UK rapper AJ Tracey has released a deluxe edition of his self-titled debut album, and it features this new single “Floss,” a banger that finds the middle ground between UK grime and Atlanta trap.

PRONG – “END OF SANITY”

NYC metal vets Prong have shared a new track off their upcoming EP Age Of Defiance, which drops November 29 via Steamhammer. It’s nothing you haven’t heard from this band before, but 30 years into his career, Tommy Victor still sounds pretty great.

DESERT SESSIONS – “NOSES IN ROSES, FOREVER”

Josh Homme’s first Desert Sessions album in 16 years is out today (read more about it in Notable Releases), and one of its best songs is the Josh Homme-sung “Noses In Roses, Forever,” which basically sounds like it could pass as a new QOTSA single.

ANTI-FLAG – “HATE CONQUERS ALL”

Anti-Flag announced a new album and shared this ripper of a new single, which samples a Trump speech and which the band calls “a kneejerk reaction to the idea of Love Trumps Hate and this idea that love can beat back hatred.” Read more here.
