17 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

KING KRULE – “CELLULAR”

Man Alive!, the new King Krule album, is out this week and here’s another single to whet your appetite. “Cellular” is the most lively single we’ve gotten from KK since “Dum Surfer” and plays around with post-punk rhythms.

TRICKY – “LONELY DANCER” FT. ANIKA

Trip hop pioneer Tricky is back with a new EP titled 20, 20 that will be out March 6 via his own False Idols label. First single “Lonely Dancer” features German singer Anika who brings an icy chill to the track that is different than Tricky’s usual collaborators.

PEARL JAM – “SUPERBLOOD WOLFMOON”

Following the dancey lead single “Dance of the Clairvoyants” off their upcoming album Gigaton, Pearl Jam go in a more hip-shakin’ retro rock direction on second single “Superblood Wolfmoon.”

GREG DULLI – “A GHOST”

There’s a strong sun-baked spaghetti western vibe to “A Ghost,” the latest single from Greg Dulli’s new solo album, Random Desire,’ that’s out this week. Recording in Joshua Tree might’ve had something to do with it. Read our interview with Greg for more.

WAXAHATCHEE – “LILACS”

“‘Lilacs’ was the last song I wrote for the record,” Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield says, “and it’s mostly just about obsessive/negative thought patterns. It’s about backsliding into old behaviors that don’t serve you and sort of letting your worst self get the best of you. I think that when people are in that mindset they can really try to turn the blame onto other people, so the song sort of plays out like a conflict you’d have with someone you love. It’s meant to capture that moment of heat that happens right when you realize you’re wrong or that your issue is more with yourself than with someone else – being flawed and fragile but making progress inch by inch. The chorus serves as a sweet little resolve. I wanted it to feel like the light at the end of the tunnel and the reminder that it can always and often does get better.” It’s off her new album Saint Cloud, due out March 27 via Merge.

HORSE LORDS – “PEOPLE’S PARK”

Baltimore experimentalists Horse Lords will release new album The Common Task on March 14 via Northern Spy. The song title comes from a public park established by the Young Lords, a Latinx liberation organization in Chicago while the music was inspired by reggaeton. “The music was an experiment in testing the limits of genre,” say Horse Lords, “The project was approached with great respect for the history, techniques and repertoire of reggaeton, trying to extrapolate from rather than impose upon. The standard drum pattern underwent a process of distillation and recombination (this we must admit was not a minimally invasive procedure), mutating into a tiling rhythmic canon. Reggaeton’s links to dub were emphasized in the production, overall the hope being a balance of reverence and playfulness.”

NAP EYES – “SO TIRED”

“I get frustrated sometimes by what the world seems to require for success at a given task (for example, polished songwriting, coherent and understandable communication), so part of this is just me venting on this subject,” says Nap Eyes frontman Nigel Chapman of this new single. “Sometimes I would rather flow with free writing than try to box songs into rehearsed, many-times-repeated containers.” Nap Eyes new album Snapshot of a Beginner will be out March 27 via Jagjaguwar/Paradise of Bachelors.

ELLIS – “EMBARRASSING”

Canadian songwriter Linnea Siggelkow is releasing her first LP as Ellis, Born Again, in April via Fat Possum records, and the latest single she’s shared is “Embarrassing.” “I’ve come to realize that shame can be both good and bad,” she says, “and the importance of recognizing the difference. I’ve felt it often when I shouldn’t have, when I’ve been made to feel guilty for things that have happened outside of my control, or for feeling ashamed of my body or my femininity or my feelings. But I think it’s important to also recognize that some things shouldn’t be justified, sometimes I act in wrong ways and hurt myself or others around me. I am learning to take responsibility for my actions and to hold myself accountable for the things that I should be embarrassed by, to say sorry, and to be better.”

ACTIVITY – “EARTH ANGEL”

Brooklyn’s Activity, which includes members of Grooms, Russian Baths and Field Mouse, will release their debut album, Unmask Whoever, on March 27 via Western Vinyl. Their new single may share its title with The Penguins’ doo-wop classic, but this “Earth Angel” has other things on it’s mind: “I wanna fuck around.”

YUMI ZOUMA – “SOUTHWARK”

New Zealand band Yumi Zouma specialize in a breezy brand of ’80s pop as you can hear on appearling new single “Sourhwark.” Songwriter Christie Simpson says,  “I wrote the chorus line [‘I am imperfectly yours’] about the someone in particular that I was with at the time, but it now feels like a universal truth for my relationships, a dedication that goes to every person I’ve loved and those that I’m still loving now.” Yumi Zouma’s new album Truth or Consequences is out March 13 via Polyvinyl.

THE STROKES – “BAD DECISIONS”

The second single off the new Strokes album kinda sounds like a cross between “I Melt With You,” “Dancing With Myself,” and Is This It-era Strokes.

YVES TUMOR – “GOSPEL FOR A NEW CENTURY”

Yves Tumor announced a new album, and you can read more about its great lead single here.

PORTRAYAL OF GUILT – “THE END OF MAN WILL BRING PEACE TO THIS EARTH” & SLOW FIRE PISTOL – “HEART OF DISCERNMENT”
