So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

BUILT TO SPILL - "MOUNTAIN TOP" (DANIEL JOHNSTON COVER)

This Built to Spill tribute to Daniel Johnston is shaping up to be pretty great, with Doug Martsch and co's just-produced-enough versions of these great songs. Another benefit is that the BTS album this most resembles is There's Nothing Wrong with Love so fans of that one, listen up -- this version of "Mountain Top" is terrific. They album's out June 12.

THE PRETENDERS - "YOU CAN'T HURT A FOOL"

GIRL IN RED - "MIDNIGHT LOVE"

"'midnight love' feels like my best work so far," Marie Ulven, aka Norwegian bedroom pop artist girl in red, writes of her dynamic new single. "It's my first song with a piano, but the approach of writing it was a bit different than usual too. Even though I’m singing from my perspective, as the 'victim,' in real life it was actually me who was 'bad guy.' A close friend was treated the same way I had treated someone else. Like, this dude would text her at night to see if they could meet up, and it kind of gave her false hope that they could be something more, so she always would say yes and be there for him. Seeing that so up close gave me some perspective and I realized that my situation was very similar. so this song is pretty much me reflecting on how small I’ve made someone else feel. Even though I never meant be a dick, I was. We met up recently after she heard the song and I apologized. I think she forgave me.”

RVG - "PERFECT DAY"

Australia’s RVG will release their second album, Feral, next Friday and they’ve just released a new song from it. “Perfect Day,” which is not a Lou Reed cover, is a jangly earworm that singer/songwriter Romy Vager says is “about trying to give someone the façade of it being a nice day even though things around them really aren’t good.”

TANYA DONELLY - "AS TEARS GO BY" (MARIANNE FAITHFULL/ROLLING STONES COVER, FT. SADIE DUPUIS)

Tanya Donelly (of Throwing Muses, The Breeders, and Belly) has launched a new series where she’ll release a cover song each Sunday, with proceeds going to different causes. Her first cover is also a tribute to Marianne Faithfull, who was recently hospitalized with COVID-19. She did “As Tears Goes By,” the Jagger/Richards/Oldham composition that Marianne released as a single in 1964 (and that The Rolling Stones then released their own version of the following year). It’s a great cover, and making it even better is backing vocals from Speedy Ortiz’s Sadie Dupuis. Read more here.
