17 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

MERCURY REV – “TOBACCO ROAD” FT SUSANNE SUNDFØR & “ODE TO BILLIE JOE” FT LUCINDA WILLIAMS (BOBBIE GENTRY COVERS)

Mercury Rev’s tribute to Bobbie Gentry’s The Delta Sweete is out in a couple weeks, and features an amazing lineup of vocalists, including Norah Jones, Margo Price, Phoebe Bridgers, Hope Sandoval, Vashti Bunyan, Rachel Goswell (Slowdive), Beth Orton, and more. They just released two tracks from it. Susanne Sundfør takes on “Tobacco Road” which is a really great version, that’s got a bit of that ’60s orch-pop going on. Then there’s Lucinda Williams who provides vocals for the LP’s bonus track, a cover of Gentry’s smash hit “Ode to Billie Joe”(which wasn’t on The Delta Sweete) which adds real swagger.

BRUTUS – “WAR”

Belgium’s Brutus are following their 2017 debut LP Burst with the new album Nest on March 29 via Sargent House. Like the debut, it was produced by Jesse Gander (best known for work with White Lung and Japandroids), but going by lead single “War,” it’s not a repeat of their debut by any means. It’s part ethereal wave, part post rock, part D-beat, and drummer/singer Stefanie Mannaerts’ truly soaring vocals take the genre-defying song to another level.

TEEN – “RUNNER”

Brooklyn’s TEEN, which is made up of sisters Teeny, Lizzie, and Katherine Lieberson, will release their new album, Good Fruit, on March 1 and have just shared new single “Runner.” “I wanted to explore a feeling: what makes someone seemingly difficult? Particularly women? Rarely have I had the experience where my partner is OK with my complexities; my intensity, my warmth, my ambition, generosity or lack thereof,” Teeny told Billboard, “The fact that I unabashedly will not be contained. Instead my experience, especially in relationships with men, has been this: it is far more comfortable to keep me as a projection of what they want, rather than interact with who I really am. When I begin to feel this, and it’s often when a dude is asking me to be his girlfriend, and comply with his systems of habit, I run.” The song is a great piece of arty synthpop, and the video is striking.

RYAN ADAMS – “FUCK THE RAIN” (FT JOHN MAYER)

Ryan Adams has a new single from Big Colors, which is his first of three albums due out this year. The mid-tempo acoustic number features a guitar solo from singer-songwriter and Dead & Company member John Mayer. “Check out this song it’s cool,” says Ryan. “Or don’t- we all might die trump is president. I love you, sincerely Ryan Adams.”

Y LA BAMBA – “BOCA LLENA”

Portland’s Y La Bamba are back with new LP, Mujeres, on February 8 and they’ve just dropped this sultry, danceable new single. “This song is about everything that I have been taking in so far until this point,” says singer-songwriter Luz Elena Mendoza. “It is about the things that I see and often feel, that due to the distractions and false ideals society forces on to some, parts of the world don’t see.”

BONOBO – “IBRIK”

Though Fabric Records’ long-running Fabriclive mix series is no more, the label is now starting a Fabric Presents series and the first mix will be made by Bonobo. It’s due February 22, but you can stream Bonobo’s new song “Ibrik” from the mix now.

KINGS DESTROY – “FANTASMA NERA”

NYC’s Kings Destroy have teamed with producer David Bottrill (Tool, King Crimson, etc) for their new album Fantasma Nera, due March 8 via Svart Records. The title track is out now, and it sees Kings Destroy expanding their sonic palette and going into trippy desert rock territory.

INJURY RESERVE – “JAWBREKEAR” (ft. RICO NASTY & PRO TEENS)

Avant-hip hop group Injury Reserve (rappers Ritchie With A T and Stepa J. Grogg with producer Parker Corey) are the second hip hop act to sign to indie rock-oriented label Loma Vista (following Denzel Curry), and they’re planning to release a self-titled album on the label this year. Most details are still TBA, but they just released lead single “Jawbreaker” featuring Rico Nasty and Pro Teens. It’s an appealing dose of noisy, abstract hip hop, and maybe we’re biased, but it’s worth it for Rico Nasty’s killer verse alone.

EAST OF THE WALL – “FAST-BANG POOPER DOOP”

You may be hesitant to take a song called “Fast-Bang Pooper Doop” seriously, but don’t judge this one by its title. It’s a dose of sludgy, chaotic yet precise prog metal, and it’s a promising taste of their new album NP-Complete (due March 29 via Translation Loss).

VAN GOOSE – “SHE’S NO PRESSURE”

Van Goose, aka Marcy Playground drummer Shlomie Lavie, has a new single — this funky little number, “She’s No Pressure.” The song’s from Van Goose’s debut album, Habitual Eater, which is out March 1.

UNI – “DESTROYER”

Uni, the NYC-based psych band that includes David Strange and Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger’s Charlotte Kemp Muhl and new singer Jack James, have a new single: the heavy, big-riffed “Destroyer,” which comes with a phantasmagoric video full of freaky claymation and apocalyptic visions. KEVIN DEVINE – “ONLY YOURSELF”

JENNY LEWIS – “RED BULL & HENNESSY”

LADY LAMB – “EVEN IN THE TREMOR”
