17 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

JAY ROCK – “THE OTHER SIDE” (ft. MOZZY & DCMBR)

Jay Rock released one of the best rap albums of last year with Redemption, and now he’s back with a new single that proves he is not slowing down. Over a head-nodding West Coast beat from Cardo, Jay Rock and Mozzy trade verses and both sound tough as nails. DCMBR tops it off with a nice soulful hook.

ZERO 7 – “AURORA” (FT. JOSE GONZALEZ)

Chillout vets Zero 7 worked with Jose Gonzalez back in 2006 for their album The Garden, and they’ve done so again on this new single. Once again it’s a match made in heaven or at least the lobbies of boutique hotels everywhere. This single follows last year’s “Mono.”

ALBERT HAMMOND JR – “FAST TIMES”

The Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr is back with a new single, a jaunty number called “Fast Times,” Of it, AHJr says, “Explore the chaos. Be present without judgment and remind yourself you’ll forget everything you’ve learned today, tomorrow. I present to you Fast Times…enjoy at full blast!”

THE MURLOCS (MEMBERS OF KING GIZZARD) – “WITHSTAND”

Australian band The Murlocs, who are led by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizards’ Ambrose Kenny-Smith, just announced new album Manic Candid Episode which will be out March 22 via Flightless Bird/ATO. Get a taste with bluesy, garagey first single “Withstand.”

DAN MANGAN – “IN THE AEROPLANE OVER THE SEA” (NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL COVER)

“I love this song,” Dan Mangan says of his new Neutral Milk Hotel cover. “I wish I wrote this song. I don’t know if this song actually was written or if it always existed. This song was the first dance at my wedding. This song is life and death and beauty and fear and love and anger and celebration. I made this recording to be played at my wife’s Aunt Lauri’s funeral. I couldn’t be there. She was an incredible sculptor. She lived in Tucson and the first time I met her, I had just driven from El Paso with no air conditioning. My south-facing left arm out the window- absorbing a day’s worth of hot southern sun. I was young and inexperienced and hadn’t applied any sun screen. She spent the evening hacking at her aloe vera plants, wrapping my arm in fresh leaves. She was a kind, creative and talented artist, and was a life-long inspiration to my wife Kirsten, who learned from Lauri that she could forge a life in artistry if that’s what her heart desired. This recording is for Lauri Slenning.”

MOTLEY CRUE – “THE DIRT (EST. 1981) (ft. MACHINE GUN KELLY)

A new Motley Crue biopic called The Dirt is coming to Netflix on March 22, and to further promote that, Motley Crue have released a new song from the film’s soundtrack called “The Dirt (Est. 1981)” and it features rapper Machine Gun Kelly, who plays Tommy Lee in the movie. You probably have a pretty good idea of what to expect from this one. Observe:

TRIUMVIR FOUL – “URINE OF ABOMINATION I”

Portland death metallers Triumvir Foul (who share members with Ash Borer) are releasing their new album Urine of Abomination on March 29 via 20 Buck Spin (North America) and Invictus Productions (Europe). It’s four tracks long, all with the same title as the album, and “Urine of Abomination I” is out now. If you like your metal with an extra layer of noise and filth (and urine), check this out.

CHIEF KEEF & ZAYTOVEN – “SPY KID”

Chief Keef is teaming with producer Zaytoven for the collaborative album GloToven, which comes out March 15 via Glo Gang/RBC, and new single “Spy Kid” is streaming now. Keef is mostly in auto-tune mode, which pairs well with Zaytoven’s ice-cold production.

OFFSET – “CLOUT” (ft. CARDI B)

Offset’s debut solo album Father of 4 is out today and the best part about it is that it features a killer Cardi B verse on “Clout.”

SHANA CLEVELAND – “DON’T LET ME SLEEP”

La Luz frontwoman Shana Cleveland will release new solo album Night of the Worm Moon on April 5 which she recorded during the 2017 solar eclipse and the video for the lovely “Don’t Let Me Sleep” works that into its theme.

THELMA – THE ONLY THING (ALBUM STREAM)

Brooklyn musician and songwriter Natasha Jacobs was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a genetic joint disorder, after releasing her first album as Thelma in 2017. For her second, The Only Thing, she worked with synths as playing guitar became physically impossible. She wrote more about the process in an essay on The Talkhouse.

SUNWATCHERS – ILLEGAL MOVES (ALBUM STREAM)

Brooklyn’s improvisational psych/jazz/punk quartet Sunwatchers just released Illegal Moves which, while instrumental, is imbued with the group’s fierce socio-political worldview. If only politicians were described as skronky. Stream the whole thing:

HEALTH & JPEGMAFIA – “HATE YOU”

Noise pop-turned-industrial rock band HEALTH and avant-rapper/producer JPEGMAFIA teamed up for this collaborative single, which we wrote more about here.

NEW IDEA SOCIETY – “NOW IS HERE”

New Idea Society, the project of Mike Law (Eulcid, Wild Arrows) and Stephen Brodsky (Mutoid Man, Cave In, etc), are back with a new release after an eight-year hiatus. They made the new songs with past contributor Alan Cage (Quicksand) on drums, and new bassist Brian Cook (Russian Circles, Botch, Sumac), and we wrote more about the just-released “Now Is Here” here.

SLEAFORD MODS – “BIG BURT”

One of the standout cuts from Sleaford Mods’ new album Eton Alive, with Jason Williamson dropping some seriously dense slang. “I got a wonky back, inspector gadget in deep sea batter, 80’s cafe scampi chap, alright chap? Boston stump ya fall off splatter!” We don’t know what it means either, but it sounds cool.

MATTHEW LOGAN VASQUEZ – “VACATION”

Delta Spirit frontman Matthew Logan Vasquez’s new solo album, Light’n Up, it out today via Dine Alone, and to celebrate he’s shared a new video for album track “Vacation.” The song “is about certain ironies in my life,” he says. “First that I travel the world for work, and save all my money so that I can stay home. Also most of my relationships are best described as ‘weak ties.’ I’m fortunate to have lots of great friends living all over the place, but it’s hard to develop past our first experiences. This song makes me want to pick up the phone and call old tour pals.”

PAWS – “NOT ENOUGH”

Scottish indie-punks PAWS are going in a gentler direction on their new album, as evidenced by lead single “Not Enough” which we wrote more about here.
