19 New Songs Out Today
So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…
PROPHETS OF RAGE - "MADE WITH HATE"
"Here the cameras click / the shots go boom / money talks / God walks out the room" - Chuck D sounds pissed off of "Made with Hate," the new single from Prophets of Rage (the supergroup that also features Tom Morello, Tim Commerford, Brad Wilk, B-Real and DJ Lord). Says Chuck, ""AS WITH MANY songs 'Made With Hate' was formed out of a conversation amongst ourselves about the level of passion fuel it takes to create. Especially when attacking something of HATE. You must create the energy to hate 'HATE'. To have PEACE you have to despise Hatred with a passion for Peace and attack it. You can't have hate take over anything especially history, so you have to fuel yourself to attack in thought word and deed with equal passion."
THE WEDDING PRESENT - "JUMP IN, THE WATER'S FINE"
UK indie rock vets The Wedding Present are back with their first new material in two years, a new 7" single on their own Come Play With Me label. The song was co-written by frontman David Gedge and Danielle Wadey who recently switched from bass to guitar. "Danielle came up with the solo bass part after I said I wanted to do a song that was bass-driven and it just got fatter and heavier!," David told Louder Than War. "We also now have three vocalists in the band so we used the opportunity to experiment with some a cappella singing, too." It's definitely different than anything The Wedding Present have quite done before. Darren Hayman of Hefner did the single's artwork.
LAURA STEVENSON - "JESUS, ETC" (WILCO COVER)
Chicago podcast Better Yet is releasing all of god's money, a tribute compilation to Wilco's classic Yankee Hotel Foxtrot benefiting the AIDS Foundation of Chicago. It's due out July 10, and includes this rustic, harmony-laden folk take on "Jesus, Etc" from Laura Stevenson, who released The Big Freeze back in March.
DEFLORE W/ JAZ COLEMAN (KILLING JOKE) - PARTY IN THE CHAOS (EP STREAM)
Killing Joke frontman Jaz Coleman has teamed with Italian group Deflore for a new EP. The band opened for KJ in Rome and Jaz was taken by their sound. "They were so powerful, such epic sounds, so cinematic," Jaz tells Revolver. You can hear that cinematic vibe in these three songs which are orchestral but also very heavy.
A$AP FERG - "WIGS" (ft. CITY GIRLS & ANTHA)
A$AP Ferg recently released a new single featuring A$AP Rocky, and now he's back with another new single, and this one features rising Miami duo City Girls and Ferg's Harlem neighbor ANTHA. Like the last single, it finds Ferg in total banger mode, and it's predictably great.
BIG K.R.I.T. - "ADDICTION" (ft. LIL WAYNE & SAWEETIE)
Big K.R.I.T.'s anticipated new album K.R.I.T. Iz Here comes out July 12, and toady he released its second single, which features Lil Wayne and the up-and-coming Saweetie. The more modern, electronic sounding production is slightly more outside of K.R.I.T.'s usual comfort zone than the soulful production of the last single, but he still navigates it expertly.
SHENSEEA - "BEST LIFE"
Rising dancehall singer Shenseea recently signed to Interscope and released the song "Blessed" (ft. Tyga), and now she's back with another addictive new single, "Best Life." She'll be in NYC this summer for Warm Up.
THE UNDERACHIEVERS - LORDS OF FLATBUSH 3 (MIXTAPE STREAM)
The Underachievers have been busy this year as members of the Beast Coast supergroup, but they're also staying active on their own and released the 9-song mixtape Lords of Flatbush 3.
N.A.O. QUELLY - "MO BETTA"
Speaking of Beast Coast, Joey Bada$$ now has his own record label called Badmind and the first act he signed to the label is N.A.O. Quelly. His debut project Myk'Quel is coming soon but first the high-voiced rapper's new single "Mo Betta" is out now. It was produced by Pro Era/Beast Coast member Powers Pleasant, and it's a very cool offering from this new artist. N.A.O. Quelly plays his first headlining show on August 14 at Knitting Factory Brooklyn.
ENFORCED - "BORN LOST"
Richmond thrashers Enforced are releasing At the Walls on July 12 via WAR Records. They recently shared a song featuring Dwid Hellion of Integrity, and now they're back with another new single which should also appeal to fans of Integrity as well as fans of '80s crossover or Enforced's Richmond neighbors/recent tourmates Iron Reagan. Listen at Decibel.
WITCH VOMIT - "DRIPPING TOMBS"
Portland, OR's Witch Vomit are following 2017's buzzed-about Poisoned Blood with a new album, Buried Deep In A Bottomless Grave, on August 30 via 20 Buck Spin. Lead single "Dripping Tombs" is a dose of raw, filthy old school-style death metal that stays true to OSDM's punk aesthetic and thrash riffage.
HIGH COMMAND - "VISIONS FROM THE BLADE"
Worcester crossover thrashers High Command are releasing their debut LP Beyond The Wall Of Desolation on Southern Lord "in the coming months," and the punishing lead single "Visions from the Blade" is a very promising taste.
SCAM AVENUE - "JAILBIRD"
Brooklyn band Scam Avenue includes Nate Smith from Shy Child, Devery Doleman of Le Laque, as well as Lawrence Kim and Julie Rozansky. The group's sound is sleek and slinky, owing maybe just a little to '90s trip hop and dance music, as you can hear on first single "Jailbird." The single comes with a striking video made by ioulex (Julia Koteliansky and Alexander Kerr). Look for Scam Avenue's debut album later this year.
KATE NASH - "BAD LIEUTENANT"
Kate Nash is the subject of documentary Kate Nash: Underestimate The Girl, which recently premiered on BBC 3 in the UK, and to go with that she's shared dancefloor-ready new track "Bad Lieutenant."
FRIENDLY FIRES - "SILHOUETTES"
Friendly Fires are back with their first album in eight years which was co-produced by Disclosure, Janes Ford and others. They’ve just shared “Silhouettes,” a bongo-fueled single that beams sunny and tropical disco vibes.
BOY SCOUTS - "GET WELL SOON"
Oakland, CA-based songwriter and musician Taylor Vick is releasing a new album as Boy Scouts, Free Company, on August 30 via ANTI-. First single "Get Well Soon" has a tiny bit of country twang but mostly hews close to pleasantly meandering indie folk.
MANCHESTER ORCHESTRA and SARAH SILVERMAN/HARKIN - "MY BACKWARDS WALK" (FRIGHTENED RABBIT COVERS)
Two more covers from the upcoming Frightened Rabbit tribute album are here.
OPERATOR MUSIC BAND - "SLIM SPIN"
Operator Music Band's shiny, clinical brand of pop -- populated with gurgling synthesizers, funky krautrock-style drumming, and jazzy chord progressions -- draws comparisons to Stereolab but they bring their own style to the table, with a strong dance element as well. "Slim Spin," the first single from their new album, is a particularly gleaming example of what they do.
