19 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

ABIGAIL WILLIAMS – “I WILL DEPART”

Abigail Williams, whose metalcore and symphonic black metal roots are very much in the rearview, have announced a followup to 2015’s The Accuser, Walk Beyond The Dark, due November 15 via Blood Music. The first single is the eight-plus minute “I Will Depart,” which is a little less evil and a little more melodic than The Accuser, but still pretty menacing and a very promising taste of this new LP. Ken Sorceron & co are also planning a fall North American tour with Enisferum, Kalmah and Aenimus, dates for which are still TBA. Stay tuned.

THOR & FRIENDS – “AS ABOVE SO BELOW”

Thor Harris, percussionist for Swans, Shearwater, Xiu Xiu, Amanda Palmer, and his own Thor & Friends ensemble, among others, is the 2019 artist in residence at Joyful Noise Recordings. He’s collaborating with a whole bunch of artists to create over 300 minutes of music for a 6-disc vinyl box set (limited to 666 copies, of course, and packaged in a wooden box made by Thor himself, who counts woodworking among his many talents). He’s shared “As Above So Below,” which was made with Wye Oak’s Jenn Wasner, Jeremy Barnes and Heather Trost of A Hawk and A Hacksaw, John Dieterich of Deerhoof, and Thierry Amar and Tim Herzog of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, among others.

GARCIA PEOPLES – “HEART AND SOUL”

NJ’s Garcia Peoples have shared “Heart & Soul” from their forthcoming One Step Behind. Moody and mellow, with more than a little flute, the song takes its time across eight minutes, building tensions and atmosphere before things really kick in.

HANNAH DIAMOND & DANNY L HARLE – “PART OF ME”

PC Music pop singer Hannah Diamond shares her first single of the year, which is accompanied by sugary-sweet production from labelmate Danny L Harle.

PETER IVERS – “IN HEAVEN”

Cult musician Peter Ivers released two albums for Warner Brothers in the mid-’70s, but was an extremely prolific artist, recording hundreds of songs on his own. RVNG Int. is unearthing some of those on a new compilation, Becoming Peter Ivers, collecting 25 songs transferred from a survey of over 500 reels and cassettes, plus a booklet featuring many unseen photos and ephemera. One of the songs is Peter’s version of “In Heaven,” the song he co-wrote with David Lynch for Eraserhead, which was used in the film’s iconic “lady in the radiator” sequence. Unsurprisingly, this is a much different version. Becoming Peter Ivers is out November 8.

COMMON HOLLY – “MEASURED”

Brigitte Naggar is set to release her new album as Common Holly, When I say to you Black Lightning, on October 18 via Barsuk, and here’s another song from it. “I was pretty set on this song just being one verse and lasting about thirty seconds,” Brigitte Naggar told Flood. “But, on better counsel, I took a few minutes one morning at the cabin where we were recording, to flesh out some more words. Now I think it’s a little thesis statement on the cycle of loving and losing. It definitely also feels like an old Jewish folk song to me, but with more flutes.”

CARACARA – “DARK BELLS”

Caracara released their great Better EP earlier this year, and today they’re back with another new single, “Dark Bells,” which — like Better — was produced by Will Yip. This one starts off as a crunchy, melodic alt-rock banger that sounds like it could’ve been a hit in the late ’90s until it seamlessly transitions into bouncy modern synthpop. It’s really cool stuff.

ZONAL – “WRECKED”

Zonal — the new project of Justin Broadrick (Godflesh) and Kevin Martin (The Bug), who previously collaborated as Techno Animal — are gearing up to release their new album Wrecked, which includes 12 songs, half of which feature Moor Mother. Here’s one of the ones that doesn’t feature Moor Mother: the creepy, crackly title track.

HAVE A NICE LIFE – “LORDS OF TRESSERHORN”

Have A Nice Life recently announced their anticipated third album Sea of Worry and shared the driving title track, and now they’ve unleashed a second single which shows off a sleepier, hazier side of them.

PLAGUE YEARS – “HELLBORN”

Detroit crossover thrashers Plague Years are planning to release a full-length album on eOne in 2020, but in the meantime they’ve put out a video for “Hellborn” off last year’s six-song Unholy Infestation. It’s not a new song, but if you haven’t familiarized yourself with Plague Years yet, this new video is a good opportunity to get into them while you await the new LP.

FIREBREATHER – “OUR SOULS, THEY BURN”

Sweden’s Firebreather have shared another track off their upcoming album Under A Blood Moon (due 9/27 via RidingEasy), and this one mixes slower, doomier stuff with the kind of roaring sludge that the previous two singles had. It gets a little trippy at times too.

BUILDINGS – “BEAR THE DOG”

Minneapolis noise rock trio Buildings are a band who once played NYC with Unsane and Cherubs, and if you like those bands, you’re probably gonna like Buildings’ new single “Bear the Dog” too. It’s the first taste of their new LP Negative Sound, which drops November 22 via Gilead Media.

WILCO – “EVERYONE HIDES”

Wilco have shared “Everyone Hides,” the second single from their upcoming album Ode to Joy. The video, directed by Jamie Fleischel, has the band playing a game of hide-and-seek.

BRITTANY HOWARD – “13TH CENTURY METAL”

Alabama Shakes frontwoman Brittany Howard shares another new single ahead of the release of her debut solo album, Jamie, on Friday, and we wrote more about it here.

DANNY BROWN – “BEST LIFE”

Danny Brown has shared the Q-Tip-produced second single off his anticipated new album, which you can read more about here.

ALICIA KEYS & MIGUEL – “SHOW ME LOVE”

Alicia Keys and Miguel have a new duet, featuring guitar by Raphael Saadiq. Read more here.

GRADE 2 – “TIRED OF IT”

UK punks Grade 2 have shared the second single off their upcoming Tim Armstrong-produced album Graveyard Island, which comes out in October via Tim’s Hellcat label. Read more about it here.

WISH YOU WERE HERE (mem STICK TO YOUR GUNS) – “FIVE ROSES”

Wish You Were Here is the Bon Iver-ish indie folk solo project of Jesse Barnett, who’s best known for fronting the hardcore/metalcore band Stick To Your Guns. It’s the first single off his upcoming debut album, which you can read about here.

HANGMAN – ONE BY ONE

Long Island hardcore band Hangman’s debut album comes out later this week, but you can stream it in full now and read more about it here.
