19 New Songs Out Today
So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…
VEGYN - "NASEUOUS / DEVILISH" (ft. JPEGMAFIA)
South London producer Vegyn, who worked with Frank Ocean on Endless and Blonde and co-hosted Frank's Beats 1 show blonded, is releasing his proper debut album, Only Diamonds Cut Diamonds, on November 8 via PLZ Make It Ruins. The first single features JPEGMAFIA, who sounds as great as he does on his own new LP.
ROGER HARVEY - "BURN ONE WITH JOHN PRINE" (KACEY MUSGRAVES COVER)
Indie folkie Roger Harvey is releasing a new 7" with his song "Twice As High" and his cover of Kacey Musgraves' "Burn One With John Prine," and the Kacey cover is now streaming. Roger really puts his own twist on the song, and it's very worth hearing.
HARRY NILSSON - "LOSST AND FOUNND" & "U.C.L.A."
We lost Harry Nilsson in 1994 to a heart attack, when he was just 52. At the time, he was working on his first new album 15 years and now, 25 years later, those recordings will be released as Losst and Founnd that will be out November 22 via Omnivore Recordings. It features contributions from Van Dyke Parks, Jim Keltner, Jimmy Webb, and Harry’s son, Kiefo. You can check out two songs from it right now: the bouncy title track and the very Nilsson-esque "U.C.L.A."
CASANOVA - "LIVE" (ft. GIGGS)
Brooklyn rapper Casanova is releasing his new album Behind These Scars on October 11 via Roc Nation, and its latest single features UK rapper Giggs. "It was a dope experience to work with Giggs and to be able to combine U.K. culture with Brooklyn," Casanova told Complex, and their distinctly different styles pair well on this transatlantic collab.
YOUNG GUV (BEN FROM FUCKED UP) - "CAUGHT LOOKIN'"
Ben Cook already released one album as Young Guv this year and his second will be out October 25. Where GUV I was a concentrated dose of late-'70s style power-pop, GUV II looks to be more varied. "Caught Looking" is funky, synthy pop that sounds right out of 1984. With it comes an equally '80s-style video, shot all over New York City, and includes some sax-on-a-boat action.
DAWN RAY'D - "TO ALL, TO ALL, TO ALL!"
After debuting the intro track off their upcoming album Behold Sedition Plainsong (due 10/25 via Prosthetic), Liverpool folk/black metallers Dawn Ray’d have now released the album's first proper single, "To All, To All, To All!" "The title is the opening line of the final communique released by the Kronstadt rebellion in Russia in 1921, which was an anarchist uprising," singer/violinist Simon Barr told Kerrang. "The lyrics are about the tragedy of those who uphold and support capitalism, despite the misery, drudgery, depression that comes with living under the system. There’s something terrible about being bludgeoned by something whilst still believing it’s there to benefit you."
JULIANA HATFIELD - "NEXT TO YOU" (THE POLICE COVER)
Supergrass recently released a cover of The Police's "Next To You" (the lead track on Outlandos d’Amour) and now here's Juliana Hatfield covering the same song. It's like when we got two asteroid/meteor movies in 1998! In Juliana's case, it's part of her upcoming Juliana Hatfield Sings the Police tribute album that's out November 15. "Their recording of it is so perfect in its imperfection," Juliana tells Billboard. "It’s unpolished and raw. That whole album sounds like three guys bashing out a song in a room together. So I didn’t even want to attempt to do a rocking version of it like that. I don’t want it to be compared to the original. There’s no way I could come close. So I just went in a completely different direction and slowed down to half time. Listen at Billboard.
FOALS - "INTO THE SURF"
Here's another song off Foals' upcoming Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost - Part 2 which is out October 18. "Into the Surf" is one of their widescreen swayalong anthems.
MACSEAL - "GRADUATING STEPS"
Macseal have shared a second single off their upcoming debut album Super Enthusiast (due 11/8 via 6131), and this one's a very catchy offering of jangly emo.
VAMACHARA - "DELIVERANCE"
California's Vamachara have a punishing sound that pulls from late '90s / early '00s hardcore and metalcore but sounds fresh today, and that's on display on their new single "Deliverance," the first taste of the upcoming Hereafter (due October 25 via Closed Casket Activities).
VACIVUS - "SHARDS" & "ANNIHILISM"
UK death metallers Vacivus are releasing their new album Annihilism on October 25 via Profound Lore, and they're streaming two doses of pure filth from the LP right now.
GHOSTS OF GLACIERS - THE GREATEST BURDEN (ALBUM STREAM)
Denver instrumental post-metal trio Ghosts of Glaciers are releasing their four song, 40+ album The Greatest Burden this Friday, September 27 via Translation Loss, and the whole thing is streaming now. "Without lyrics, we knew we wanted to write songs that made us feel something while playing them: angry, frustrated, distraught, triumphant, lonely, exhausted, radiant and everything in between. It’s an album about cycles. My hope is that the experiences we had while writing and performing these four songs translates to the listener," drummer Ben Brandhorst told Decibel. They do indeed convey a lot of emotion, even without lyrics. If you tend to dig post-rock/post-metal type stuff, check this out.
ΣTELLA - “FOREST”
Greek artist Σtella will release The Break in January via Arbutus but they're not making you wait till next year to hear some of it. "Forest" is lush, catchy synthpop and comes with a video that makes good use of high production value locations near her home -- namely the ancient Greek temple of Poseidon, Mount Parnitha and Park of Souls.
SCREAMING FEMALES - "PRETTY OKAY"
Screaming Females are releasing a collection of their "complete non-album recordings," Singles Too, on October 18 via Don Giovanni. Today they share "Pretty Okay," from their 2008 split 7" with Full of Fancy.
NEVER ENDING GAME - "PUPPET"
Detroit’s Never Ending Game (who share members with Freedom, True Love, and Detain) have released a second single off their upcoming debut album Just Another Day (due 10/11 via Triple B), and, like the first, it's a total skull-crusher.
MOUNT EERIE & JULIE DOIRON - "LOVE WITHOUT POSSESSION"
Phil Elverum will release a new Mount Eerie album titled Lost Wisdom pt. 2, on November 8 which is his second collaboration with onetime Eric’s Trip singer Julie Doiron. (The first Lost Wisdom collaboration happened in 2008.) This is the gorgeous first single.
THE MOUNTAIN GOATS - "GET HIGH AND LISTEN TO THE CURE"
The Mountain Goats have digitally released their Welcome to Passaic 7" which has "Passaic 1975" from this year's In League With Dragons on the A-side and the awesomely-titled “Get High and Listen to The Cure” — an unreleased song from the sessions for 2017’s Goths — on the flip. Read more here.
THE KVB - "SUBMERSION"
UK psych/synthwave duo The KVB will be on their North American tour starting October 11 in San Diego and at the merch table they'll have a new EP, Submersion, available as a tour exclusive. This is the title track.
