19 New Songs Out Today
So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…
PEGGY SUE - "MOTORCADE"
UK band Peggy Sue will be back in February with new album Vices, which will be their first in five years. The first single, "Motorcade," is a little sunnier than you may remember Peggy Sue sounding, though it is a breakup song. “Motorcade is about recognizing the difference between what you need and what you want,” says singer/guitarist Katy Young, “and asking for it as fast and loud as you like. I wrote it in the first wave of relief after a big break-up - it was probably the first moment that I was ready to be a bit mean and honest about it all. When we started arranging the song with the band it just kept getting louder and faster and more powerful, now it’s this burst of energy that we’re terrified of playing live but always love every second of.”
ANIMAL COLLECTIVE - "AUTUMN RITES"
Animal Collective (who, in this case, is just Avey Tare and Geologist) have shared the Autumn-themed B-side to this past August's "Summer Blaze." "We know it doesn’t fully feel like Autumn in a lot of places just yet, so play this one outside to try and bring on the crisp," they say.
BATTLES - "FORT GREENE PARK"
Battles are sharing one last song from their forthcoming album Juice B Crypts before releasing the whole thing on Friday. "Fort Greene Park" starts on the mellow side, with tinkling synthesizers and a snaky guitar lead, but then come John Stanier's drums and it's a Battles song.
YOUNG GUV - "SHE'S A FANTASY"
Fucked Up's Ben Cook will release his second Young Guv album of 2019 later this month. "She's a Fantasy" is blissed-out janglepop in the Teenage Fanclub / Big Star mold that goes deeply psychedelic in its final act.
TEEBS - "BLACK DOVE" (ft. SUDAN ARCHIVES)
Following "Studie" ft. Panda Bear, LA beatmaker Teebs has shared another song from his upcoming new album Annica (due 10/25 via Brainfeeder), and this one features the great, rising psychedelic soul artist Sudan Archives. Her and Teebs sound truly great together.
THE FREE NATIONALS - "ETERNAL LIGHT" (ft. CHRONIXX)
Anderson .Paak's backing band The Free Nationals have been releasing a guest-filled series of singles since last year, as they gear up for a still-unannounced album, and the latest is the chilled-out "Eternal Light" with modern-day reggae great Chronixx.
EMILY JANE WHITE - "WASHED AWAY"
Emily Jane White has shared another single off her upcoming album Immanent Fire, and it's another dose of the kind of gothy, ethereal folk that she does so consistently well.
JACK PEÑATE - "MURDER"
It's been 10 years since Jack Peñate released his second album, Everything is New. If you were wondering what became of him, well, he's finally back, with his third album, After You, on November 29. He spent the last decade both working on songs and learning the technical side of production. Building his own studio in his London apartment, Peñate worked with Paul Epworth, Inflo and Alex Epton on the album and his is the new single, the danceable "Murder" that comes with a vivid, choreographed video:
COMMON HOLLY - "CRAZY OK"
Brigitte Naggar releases her new album as Common Holly, When I say to you Black Lightning, on Friday, and she's shared one more song from it. "Crazy OK" starts off as gentle, twee indie pop and then veers into much more impassioned territory.
THE DRUMS & JONNY PIERCE - “I DIDN’T REALIZE” + “YOU LIED”
Jonny Pierce of the The Drums has just shared two melancholy unreleased songs he recorded back in 2012 and is crediting them to himself and The Drums. “It’s easy to write a song when you’re in the afterglow of an epiphany,” Pierce says of "I Didn't Realize." “I was coming out of a chapter of deep grief after a band mate who I had loved deeply and trusted deeply abandoned me for some sort of hypothetical greener pasture...This song is about the realization that putting someone else’s needs above your own can lead to devastating results.”
FRAN - "SO SURREAL"
Fran the Chicago band led by singer/guitarist Maria Jacobson, will release their debut album, A Private Picture, on November 15 via Fire Talk. New single "So Surreal" is very catchy bit of jangly guitar pop that Fran says is about daydreaming. "There’s a huge disconnect between the world we create in our minds and the external world," says Jacobsen. "Our daydreams have real power and can transform our lives — but they also pull us out of the momentum of what’s happening. This song tries to capture that frenzy of being pulled in too many directions at once, even if it’s all in your head."
OBSEQUIAE - "IN THE GARDEN OF HYACINTHS"
Minneapolis' Obsequiae have shared a second single (and third track) from their anticipated new album The Palms Of Sorrowed Kings (due November 22 via 20 Buck Spin), and even more so than the previous single, this one shows off a breathtaking blend of evil black metal and gorgeous, melodic riffage.
HAVE A NICE LIFE - "SCIENCE BEAT"
"Science Beat" is the third single off Have A Nice Life's upcoming third album Sea of Worry, and it sees the usually-dark band embracing an ever so slightly prettier sounding, new wavey kind of vibe.
KATY J PEARSON - "TONIGHT"
Katy J Pearson hails from Bristol, UK and who makes, bright, twangy guitar pop. “People said I was sounding quite country and I hadn’t even realized - my eyes were opened!” says Katy. Newly signed to Heavenly Recordings, she's just released her first single for the label, the breezy, bouncy "Tonight."
X - "DELTA 88 NIGHTMARE"
Legendary punk group X have a new single out on November 29 via Fat Possum. The original lineup of the band — Exene Cervenka, John Doe, Billy Zoom, and DJ Bonebrake — recorded together earlier this year, laying down five songs in two days. Two of those recordings are on this single: “Delta 88 Nightmare,” a song that was demoed for Los Angeles but never got the full studio treatment.
SCREAMING FEMALES - "ANCIENT CIVILIZATION"
Singles Too, which collects Screaming Females' "complete non-album recordings," comes out Friday via Don Giovanni, and ahead of that they've shared one more single, "Ancient Civilization," off their 2013 split 7" with Tenement.
OMAR SOULEYMAN - "LAYLE"
Syrian dabke icon Omar Souleyman is releasing his new album Shlon on November 22 via Mad Decent/Because Music, and the first single is "Layle," which is as instantly addictive and language barrier-defying as you'd hope from Omar Souleyman.
TAYLOR HAWKINS & THE COATTAIL RIDERS - "CROSSED THE LINE" (ft. DAVE GROHL & YES' JON DAVISON)
Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins is releasing a new album called Get The Money on November 8 via Shanabelle/RCA, and it features an all-star cast of guests including his Foo Fighters bandmates Dave Grohl and Pat Smear, Duff McKagan, Nancy Wilson, Perry Farrell, Joe Walsh, Chrissie Hynde, LeAnn Rimes, Roger Taylor, and more. Grohl is on new single "Crossed The Line," along with Jon Davison who joined prog legends Yes in 2012.
