19 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

JACKIE LYNN – “SHUGAR WATER”

Jackie Lynn (Haley Fohr of Circuit des Yeux plus all three members of Bitchin Bajas) shared a bouncy second single off their upcoming album Jacqueline, and it comes with a Jacob Forman-directed video that pays homage to David Lynch’s Inland Empire, David Cronenberg’s Videodrome, and Abel Ferrara. Haley says, “‘Shugar Water’ was designed to bring us all together. It is a calling for us all to drink from the same cup and allow ourselves to let go. Let us seek refuge in each other’s arms. Let us get lost on the byway of comfort and celebration. We need each other every day (even if our mind does not remind us of this every day). Do not get lost in your own soul! What if we are, after all, just different versions of the same person?”

KING TUFF – “I’M FREE”

King Tuff says “I’m Free” is “a song I wrote a few years back which first appeared on Ty Segall’s album Freedom’s Goblin. Ty had asked me to write a song for him to record and I had this little demo laying around which I gave to him.” King Tuff has now shared that demo which you can compare and contrast with Ty’s version:

CAROLINE – “POOL #1 DARK BLUE”

London band Caroline formed in 2017 over a shared love of Midwestern emo, Appalachian folk, minimalist classical and dance music. The band practiced without a name for a year before making their live debut in 2018 as Caroline. Having signed with Rough Trade, they’ve just shared this live “pool session” for this widescreen, ellagic number called “dark blue.”

LUCIFER – “MIDNIGHT PHANTOM”

Sweden’s Lucifer make occult rock that should appear to fans of Blue Oyster Cult and Ghost, and actually, they tell Revolver their new song was specially influenced by BOC, as well as by death metal vets Autopsy. “Why no one has yet merged Autopsy and Blue Öyster Cult into four minutes is a mystery to us. ‘Midnight Phantom’ came to us in a collective nightmare and we think he made us accomplish this,” they say. The song will appear on their upcoming album Lucifer III, due March 20 via Century Media.

VASUDEVA – “BREAKS”

NJ instrumental rock trio Vasudeva have shared “Breaks” off their upcoming album Generator, due April 10 via Skeletal Lightning. It’s not easy to pin down (part math rock, part post rock, part ’80s rock, and more), but it’s a gorgeous song no matter what subgenre you call it.

MUNDY’S BAY – “VISIONS OF YOU”

Quebec indie-punks Mundy’s Bay have shared another song off their upcoming debut album Lonesome Valley, and this one sees them adding a spiky ’80s vibe to their usually-’90s-inspired sound.

ZOON – “VIBRANT COLOURS”

Hamilton, ON-based guitarist and songwriter Daniel Monkman says My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless changed his life and you can hear that record’s influence on the hazy, gorgeous shoegaze he makes as ZOON. His new album, Bleached Wavves, will be out in June via Paper Bag and this is the gossamer, widescreen first single.

JAY SOM – A THOUSAND WORDS (EP STREAM)

Jay Som’s new 7″, A Thousand Words, has two previously unreleased b-sides from the sessions she recorded her 2019 sophomore album, Anak Ko, during. “A Thousand Words” “was made after a year of extensive touring plus a cancelled tour,” Melina Duterte says. “I forced myself to make a sort of big and jovial song to bring me out of the funk I was in. I also wanted to remind myself that music can be fun! It was heavily inspired by Bruce Springsteen, Elliott Smith, Pavement and that song ‘Alright’ by Supergrass. About the second track, “Can’t Sleep,” she says, “‘Can’t Sleep’ was made in August or September 2017 while I was living with my parents in between US tours, before I moved to LA. I think I had all my gear packed away somewhere that I couldn’t access, so I used instruments left over in my childhood room: a broken acoustic guitar, chopsticks on a snare drum, a bad hi hat, and my trumpet. Everything was recorded through the laptop mic. I was pretty frustrated with the California heat and the fact that I couldn’t record properly, so this sort of fever dream song was born.”

ARCHERS OF LOAF – “RALEIGH DAYS”

They’ve been teasing, and we’ve been anticipating, and now the first new Archers of Loaf music in over 20 years is here. “Raleigh Days” is a revved up, nostalgic anthem with a little heartland rock by way of Thin Lizzy.

SAVAK – “IT’S MUTUAL”

Brooklyn band SAVAK have shared a second single from their forthcoming album Rotting Teeth in the Horse’s Mouth. “It’s Mutual” is a tense, pointed ripper.

PUBLIC PRACTICE – “COMPROMISED”

Brooklyn band Public Practice have announced their debut album, Gentle Grip, which will be out May 14 via Wharf Cat. Get a taste via the snappy, energetic first single, “Compromised,” where singer Samantha York takes a look at the moral gymnastics of our daily life. The video is fun, too.

HEXVESSEL – “BILLION YEAR OLD BEING”

Finland’s Hexvessel call themselves “Psychedelic Forest Folk,” and they tend to get associated with metal despite sounding more like Fairport Convention than Black Sabbath, and they’re also just a great rock band who sound a lot more approachable than you might expect from a band who seem so niche. “Billion Year Old Being” is dark and creepy in a way that recalls Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd or Fleetwood Mac’s “The Green Manalishi.”

EMPTY COUNTRY (CYMBALS EAT GUITARS) – “SWIM”

Empty Country, the current project of Joseph D’Agostino, frontman of the now-defunct Cymbals Eat Guitars, will now release his debut album on April 24 via Get Better Records, and you can read more about new single “Swim” here.

THE AVALANCHES – “WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU” (ft. BLOOD ORANGE)

The Avalanches have released their first new song in four years, “We Will Always Love You,” which is a collaboration with Blood Orange. Read more about it here.

RUIN LUST – “BESTIAL MAGNETISM”

Featuring members of Yellow Eyes, Anicon, Vilkacis, Vorde, and more, Ruin Lust takes a heavier detour when compared to its members’ more atmospheric musings, zeroing in on brawn, might, and hatred to fuel their frenzied sounds. Read more and hear “Bestial Magnetism” off their upcoming LP for 20 Buck Spin at Invisible Oranges.

NECK OF THE WOODS – “VISION LOSER”

“Vision Loser” is the second single off Vancouver progressive death metallers Neck of the Woods’ upcoming album for Pelagic, and you can read more about it here.

AMANDA PALMER & FRIENDS – “BEDS ARE BURNING” (MIDNIGHT OIL COVER FT. MISSY HIGGINS)

Tomorrow, Amanda Palmer will release a charity album to help benefit victims of the Australia bushfires, and it finds Amanda reuniting with her Dresden Dolls partner Brian Viglione on most songs, and her frequent collaborator Jherek Bischoff played bass and guitar. It features covers of several Australian musicians, as well as guest appearances by Australian musicians. The first taste is a cover of Midnight Oil‘s 1987 classic “Beds are Burning,” featuring Missy Higgins. Read more here.

LAS NUBES – “DEMONIZE”

“Demonize” will appear on Miami indie-punks Las Nubes upcoming split with Palomino Blond, and you can read more about it here.
