20 New Metal Songs Out This Week

I’ve spent a lot of this week still absorbing the new Tool album, but we also got plenty of great new metal (and metal adjacent) stuff to listen to, including new albums from Kayo Dot, Mizmor, Cognizance, Foscor, Disillusion, and Vitriol, all of which you can read about in Invisible Oranges’ Upcoming Metal Releases column. We also got new singles from Cult of Luna, Liturgy, Cattle Decapitation, Nile, Esoteric, Gatecreeper, Dawn Ray’d, Korn, Life of Agony, and more. Plus, the new Crypt Sermon album is streaming over a week early! Read on for all the metal-friendly music we posted on BV this week…

CULT OF LUNA – “LAY YOUR HEAD TO REST”

Cult of Luna have shared a second single off their anticipated new album A Dawn To Fear (due 9/20 via Metal Blade). Following the ten-and-a-half-minute “The Silent Man” comes “Lay Your Head To Rest,” which is a little shorter, but no less epic. It balances melody, aggression, and experimentation perfectly.

LITURGY – “GOD OF LOVE”

Brooklyn black metallers Liturgy are back with their first new song in four years, and it features an orchestra, a harp, and more. Read more here.

CATTLE DECAPITATION – “ONE DAY CLOSER TO THE END OF THE WORLD”

Cattle Decapitation have debuted the first single off their upcoming eighth album Death Atlas (due 11/29 via Metal Blade). It’s called “One Day Closer to the End of the World” and it goes back and forth between relentlessly brutal death metal and a more uplifting, melodic hook before ending up in almost atmospheric post-metal territory. It’s a cool song that covers a lot of ground without losing focus. Read more about the album (which features a Dead Can Dance cover and a member of Phish) here.

NILE – “LONG SHADOWS OF DREAD”

Nile had been talking about a new album, and then they announced a tour with Terrorizer, leaving us wondering if we would know more about the album before that tour, and now we know more about the album! It’s called Vile Nilotic Rites, and it comes out November 1 via Nuclear Blast (the same day the tour starts in Atlanta). Your first taste is the ferocious “Long Shadows of Dread.”

ESOTERIC – “DESCENT”

Funeral doom vets Esoteric’s anticipated new album A Pyrrhic Existence comes out November 8th via Season of Mist, and the first taste of the album is now here, in all its nearly-28-minute glory.

GATECREEPER – “EVERLASTING”

Arizona death metallers Gatecreeper have shared a second single off their anticipated new album Deserted, and it’s another total ripper that’s keeping our hopes very high for this album.

DAWN RAY’D – “RAISE THE FLAILS”

Liverpool black metallers Dawn Ray’d are releasing their new album Behold Sedition Plainsong on October 25th via Prosthetic Records, and it seems like the political band’s message will be just as strong as ever on this one. A press release calls it “a call to arms and a potential catalyst for positive radical change,” and then continues, “The first audio from the album [comes] in the form of the evocative album intro, “Raise The Flails,” with its rallying cry – ‘It’s time for new tales of resistance.'” It’s clearly just an intro-type song, but it already sounds promising.

KORN – “CAN YOU HEAR ME”

Korn have shared another single off their upcoming album The Nothing, which drops next week, and the song’s video doubles as a trailer for the band’s new “dramatized anthology podcast series” about the new album.

LIFE OF AGONY – “LAY DOWN”

Life of Agony have debuted the second single off their upcoming album The Sound of Scars, a concept record which picks up where the story of LOA’s classic 1993 debut River Runs Red left off. Of the new song, bassist Alan Robert says, “It’s an anthem for survivors. We’ve all been through situations in our lives where everything seems completely hopeless. ‘Lay Down’ is about believing in yourself when no one else will. Times when you really have to dig down deep to find that that last ounce of strength to keep on going.”

HIGHER POWER – “SEAMLESS”

UK band Higher Power blend real-deal hardcore and soaring ’90s alt-rock on their great new single “Seamless,” which will appear on their Roadrunner debut 27 Miles Underwater. Read more here.

PORTRAYAL OF GUILT – “SACRIFICIAL RITE” & SOFT KILL – “TIN FOIL DRIP”

Portrayal of Guilt and Soft Kill toured together earlier this year (opening for Skeletonwitch), and today they put out a split with one new song from each band. Portrayal of Guilt’s “Sacrificial Rite” starts out as the closest this band has ever come to black metal, and it transitions into the closest they’ve ever come to goth rock. It’s pretty wild. Soft Kill’s “Tin Foil Drip” is over three times as long as the Portrayal of Guilt song, and it finds their usual gothy post-punk in fine form.

PROCESS BLACK (ex-DEADGUY, KISS IT GOODBYE) – “LIES OVER TRUTH”

Process Black is the current project of former Deadguy / Kiss It Goodbye vocalist Tim Singer, along with guitarist Aaron Edge (Lumbar, Bible Black Tyrant, Ramprasad, etc) and drummer Brock Lowry (Craft Spells), and you can read more about “Lies Over Truth” from their upcoming EP on Deathwish here.

1349 – “STRIDING THE CHASM”

1349 have shared another track off their anticipated The Infernal Pathway, and it’s six minutes of relentless fury.

BORKNAGAR – “UP NORTH”

Norwegian melodic black metallers Borknagar have shared another song off their new album True North, which is due September 27 via Century Media. Read an interview with Borknagar’s Øystein G. Brun over at Invisible Oranges while you dive into the triumphant new song.

DEAF CLUB (mem THE LOCUST, etc) – “BOYFRIENDS OF CHRIST”

Deaf Club is one of the many bands of Justin Pearson (The Locust, Dead Cross, Retox, Planet B, etc), and you can read more about their upcoming EP here.

SWANS – “IT’S COMING IT’S REAL”

Swans have announced a new album which features Anna Von Hausswolff, Ben Frost, and more, and the first single is “It’s Coming It’s Real.” You can read more about it here.

CHELSEA WOLFE – “DERANGED FOR ROCK & ROLL”

Chelsea Wolfe’s new album Birth of Violence comes out next week, and she has shared another single from it ahead of the release. It’s called “Deranged For Rock & Roll,” and it’s a folky song with a hard edge that’s keeping our hopes very high for this album.

EMILY JANE WHITE – “LIGHT”

Dark folk singer Emily Jane White is releasing her new album Immanent Fire in November, and you can read more about the album and lead single “Light” here.

CRYPT SERMON – THE RUINS OF FADING LIGHT (ALBUM STREAM)

Trad-doom revivalists Crypt Sermon have made a big leap with their anticipated sophomore album The Ruins of Fading Light, which is now streaming in full two weeks ahead of its scheduled release date of September 13th (via Dark Descent). Listen at Decibel and hear three songs below.
