Billy Woods & Kenny Segal

20 New Rap Songs Out This Week

This week in hip hop we got the great new Quelle Chris album (which I reviewed for Notable Releases), plus the new collaborative album by Billy Woods & Kenny Segall, Melii’s debut, a new Saweetie EP, a collab single from Pusha T & G Count, the highly anticipated collab single from Rosalía & J Balvin, and new songs by Kool Keith, Lil Durk (with Teyana Taylor & Melii), G-Eazy (with Blueface, YG & ALLBLACK), YBN Nahmir, 03 Greedo & Mustard (ft. Shoreline Mafia), DeJ Loaf, slowthai, and more. Read on for all the new hip hop we posted on BV this week…

BILLY WOODS & KENNY SEGAL – HIDING PLACES (ALBUM STREAM)

Brooklyn indie-rapper and LA beat-scene producer Kenny Segal have teamed up for a 12-song collaborative album, and Woods navigates Segal’s warped, bass-heavy beats with ease. Features come from Elucid, Self Jupiter, and Mothermary.

MELII – PHASES (ALBUM STREAM)

Harlem’s Melii has been co-signed by Rihanna, she’s fresh off touring with Meek Mill (whose 2018 album Championships she is on), and now she just dropped her debut project phAses on Rule #1/Interscope. Across its 14 songs, she bounces between rapping and singing (and sometimes bounces between English and Spanish), and she’s great at both. It’s got trap songs, R&B songs, and plenty of the in-between, with features from A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, Tory Lanez, and Odalys.

G. COUNT & PUSHA T – “POPE VS. PONTIFF”

G. Count is one half of Chicago duo LEP Bogus Boys, and for this new song he tapped Pusha T, who’s still riding high off the strength of last year’s killer DAYTONA. It’s a moody, melancholic song, and Push destroys it with a verse that namedrops Quavo and Hillary Clinton and sounds as vicious as anything on DAYTONA.

KOOL KEITH – “UNCRUSHABLE”

Kool Keith is releasing a new EP this Friday, and we wrote more about the song “Uncrushable” and its video here.

LIL DURK – “HOME BODY” (REMIX FT. TEYANA TAYLOR & MELII)

Chicago rapper Lil Durk has released a remix of “Home Body” from last year’s Signed to the Streets 3, and the new version comes with vocals by two very talented women, Teyana Taylor and Melii (the latter of whom dropped her debut phAses earlier this week).

G-EAZY – “WEST COAST” (REMIX ft. BLUEFACE, YG, ALLBLACK)

G-Eazy and Blueface have dropped a new remix for their song “West Coast” featuring verses from two more West Coasters, YG and ALLBLACK. It comes with a black-and-white video directed by Daniel CZ and shot on the streets of the West Coast, featuring expensive cars and starring even more West Coasters like Ty Dolla $ign, E-40, P-Lo, and more.

SAWEETIE – ICY (EP STREAM)

Rising rapper Saweetie has dropped a new seven-song EP, ICY. Two of those songs feature Quavo of Migos, but Saweetie is the star of her own show and ICY is a fine showcase of her booming, confident bars. The whole thing is worth hearing but “My Type” is an early standout.

YBN NAHMIR – “BABY 8”

The YBN crew released one of the best rap albums of 2018 with YBN: The Mixtape, and now Nahmir is back with a new solo single. “Baby 8” is a little darker and more aggressive than Nahmir’s biggest hits, and he’s great at this kind of thing too.

03 GREEDO & MUSTARD – “TRAP HOUSE” (ft. SHORELINE MAFIA)

Before getting sentenced to 20 years in prison on gun and drug charges, 03 Greedo recorded a new album with (DJ) Mustard, Still Summer in the Projects, which comes out April 5 via Alamo Records. Ahead of its release, they’ve dropped a new single featuring two members of the fast-rising LA rap group Shoreline Mafia. Over a beat that marries Mustard’s trademark bounce to a little West Coast G-Funk, the guys go back and forth between furious verses and a wailing auto-tune hook. It’s cool stuff.

DEJ LOAF – “IN A MINUTE”

We’re still waiting for DeJ Loaf to finally release her debut album, and the end of the video for this new song “In A Minute” says “album coming soon” so our fingers are crossed that she means it! Meanwhile, she shows off her sentimental side on this promising loosie which comes with a video that tackles the political climate we unfortunately live in.

NGHTMRE & A$AP FERG – “REDLIGHT”

LA DJ/producer NGHTMRE has nabbed A$AP Ferg for his new single “Redlight.” The ominous, bass-heavy backdrop finds the middle ground between EDM and trap, and it should be no surprise that Ferg’s booming delivery sounds right at home over this.

ROSALIA & J BALVIN – “CON ALTURA” (ft. EL GUINCHO)

Rosalía and J Balvin have teamed up (again), and the result is this new banger “Con Altura,” which we wrote more about here.

SLOWTHAI – “GORGEOUS”

slowthai has detailed his new album Nothing Great About Britain and shared the new single “Gorgeous,” which we wrote more about here.

DENZEL CURRY – “BLACK BALLONS” REMIXES

Denzel Curry has released an EP with six remixes of “Black Balloons” (ft. GoldLink & Twelve’len) from last year’s excellent TA13OO, and he’s also got a new video for the song. The remixes were done by Telescope Thieves, Cancrejo, Manuvers, JerriousB, Pazmal, and Louby.

MIST – “CAN’T STOP CLOCKS”

UK rapper MIST is following his 2018 Diamond in the Dirt EP (which features Jessie Ware. Mr. Eazi, and more) with the new single “Can’t Stop Clocks,” along with a video directed by DAPS (who also did the videos for Migos & Drake’s “Walk It Talk It” and City Girls & Cardi B’s “Twerk”). It’s got a ridiculously catchy hook, and here’s what MIST says about the song and video: “‘Can’t Stop Clocks’ came from the idea I had about the judge being able to lock locks but we can’t stop the clocks. For all my brothers locked down and what not. The idea of the video came from a program I watched as a child called Bernard’s Watch – I’ve been watching Daps for a minute and I knew he’d be able to bring the idea to life and he did!”

NAV – “AMAZING” (ft. FUTURE)

NAV recently released his new album Bad Habits, and now he has already put out a deluxe edition featuring this new song with Future. It’s a nice dose of trap&B with both NAV and Future in auto-tuned sing-rapping mode.

LOGIC – “I’M PROBABLY GONNA ROCK YOUR WORLD” & “VACATION FROM MYSELF” (PROD. MAC DEMARCO)

Rapper Logic released his novel Supermarket, and comes with an accompanying soundtrack including these two songs produced by Mac DeMarco. They aren’t rap at all, and instead kinda sound like a modern-day lo-fi indie take on ’70s disco.

MISS EAVES – “EXPOSURE KILLS”

Brooklyn rapper Miss Eaves is releasing her Sad EP next week, and you can read more about the eccentric electro-rap of lead single “Exposure Kills” (and its video) here.

CIARA – “THINKIN BOUT YOU”

Ciara’s new album Beauty Marks comes out May 10 via Ciara’s own Beauty Marks Entertainment, and the announcement comes with this upbeat new single “Thinkin Bout You” that kinda sounds like Prince by way of Janelle Monae.
