20 New Songs Out Today
So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…
FOUR TET, KH - "ONLY HUMAN"
Four Tet is back with a new single, "Only Human," which is officially credited to Tour Tet & KH (that being his initials, Kieran Hebden). This is a more overtly dancefloor oriented single than we've heard from him in a while, certainly more than 2017's atmospheric New Energy.
SOLANGE - "ALMEDA"
Solange's awesome new album When I Get Home arrived last night with little warning (she announced it just hours beforehand). There's so much to unpack on it -- and we're still unpacking it -- but a clear highlight is "Almeda." When I Get Home pays as much tribute to jazz as it does to the chopped n screwed genre of Solange's birthplace of Houston, and this psychedelic yet trunk-rattling song is especially reliant on the latter. It's also an instantly-addictive ode to black excellence and black culture ("Black waves, black days, black baes, black days / These are black-owned things / Black faith still can't be washed away," Solange sing-raps to breathtaking effect). It's the perfect mix of forward-thinking music that's a thrill to listen to, and a powerful message.
PAN AMSTERDAM X IGGY POP - "MOBILE"
Horn player and rhymesmith Pan Amsterdam (real name Leron Thomas) has just released this compelling abstract single that has Iggy dropping in seamingly form a gas station somewhere off the highway: "Two scratches, beef jerky and a Powerball." This is from Elevator Music, Vol. 1, which is out March 15 and also features Open Mike Eagle.
EARTHEATER - "CONCEALER"
This gorgeous new techno/darkwave cut by Eartheater comes courtesy Doom Trip Records' new mixtape Doom Mix Vol. III which will be out April 9. "This is your brain on life" sings Alexandra Drewchin.
2 CHAINZ - "FORGIVEN" (ft. MARSHA AMBROSIUS)
The new 2 Chainz album Rap Or Go To The League is out now, and an early favorite is its opening track "Forgiven," which is one of the most soulful and politically conscious 2 Chainz songs to date. It features neo-soul great Marsha Ambrosius, and she and 2 Chainz performed it on Fallon last night with an orchestra and a choir. It's a moving performance and you can watch it below and stream the full album here.
LITTLE SIMZ - "SHERBERT SUNSET"
The new Little Simz album GREY Area is out today and it may very well be 2019's best rap album yet (read our review). It's got so many great tracks, but one non-single worth highlighting is "Sherbert Sunset," the penultimate track that kinda sounds like Simz' own spin on a late-album Kendrick Lamar ballad (Kendrick himself has said Simz "might be the illest doing it right now"). It's a very political record, but "Sherbert Sunset" is a breakup song, and Simz' personal music is as devastating as her political music is.
ROBERT FORSTER - "ONE BIRD IN THE SKY"
Go-Betweens co-founder Robert Forster just released his terrific new solo album, Inferno, and this closing song seems to double as a philosophy for life: “Eat only what I eat, breathe only what I breathe, well that’s me.” And as his “da da das” and violin fade out, you can almost imagine the credits rolling. May we all achieve such grace. (Read our review of the album.)
THE RADIO DEPT - "YOUR TRUE NAME" (NO EYES REMIX)
The Radio Dept have handed their 2018 single "Your True Name" over to No Eyes to remix, who turns the guitar-based original into a much, much glitchier, pitched down experience.
ARTHUR RUSSELL - "NOT CHECKING UP"
There seems to be no end to the well of unreleased tracks from the late folk/disco artist Arthur Russell, as evidenced by this spooky and spare track which was recorded in 1985 as part of the "World of Echo" sessions. It comes courtesy of Devendra Banhart who has curated a compilation titled Fragments du Monde Flottant which collects demos from the likes of Vashti Bunyan, Tim Presley, King Tuff, Helado Negro and more.
GESAFFELSTEIN & PHARRELL WILLIAMS - "BLAST OFF"
French producer Gesaffelstein's new album Hyperion comes out next week (3/8), and following his previous single with The Weeknd comes this new one with Pharrell. Like the song with The Weeknd, Gesaffelstein provides a moody backdrop, but he gives most of the spotlight to his guest vocalist, who turns it into a proper pop song.
REMA-REMA - "EMERGE (HALLIGANS LIVE REHEARSAL VERSION)"
Post-punk group Rema-Rema are probably the only band ever to be covered by Big Black and This Mortal Coil, and only existed for around in year in '79/'80. (Members would go on to be in Adam & The Ants, The Wolfgang Press and Renegade Soundwave.) They only put out one EP, which was one of 4AD first-ever releases, but they've now gone through reel-to-reel and cassette recording to release their "debut" album, Fond Reflections, some 40 years after breaking up. This is the album closer, heavy with foreboding dread and tradeoff vocals between Gary Asquith and Mick Allen.
SHE KEEPS BEES - "COYOTE"
New York duo She Keeps Bees are back with their first album in five years, Kinship, due out May 10 via Ba Da Bing. Its first single, "Coyote," is fleshed out with strings that make a beautiful accompaniment to Jessica Larrabee's howling voice and guitar.
SHOW ME THE BODY - "MADONNA ROCKET"
Show Me The Body have shared another single off their upcoming album Dog Whistle (due 3/29 via Loma Vista). Like the previous single, "Madonna Rocket" takes an unconventional approach to raw, furious hardcore, and it does a pretty good job of capturing the energy of SMTB's much talked-about live show. Speaking of, they incorporate recent live footage in this video, which is worth checking out to get a taste of how wild their shows can be.
SAM EVIAN - "ROSES"
Sam Evian has shared "Roses," a previously unreleased song that he says he cut from his 2018 album You Forever "at the last minute." It's the b-side of a limited edition 7" due out April 19, with "Cherry Tree," which Sam describes as "the first Evian song."
VLTIMAS - "MONOLILITH"
Death metal supergroup Vltimas — aka original Morbid Angel frontman David Vincent, guitarist Rune “Blasphemer” Eriksen (ex-Mayhem), and drummer Flo Mounier (Cryptopsy) — have unleashed another single off their upcoming debut album Something Wicked Marches In. "Monolilith" sees Vltimas exploring their (slightly) slower side, and it's as effectively filthy as their more whiplash-inducing songs.
QUEEN KEY - "CAN'T TAKE IT"
Queen Key's new album Eat My Pussy Again drops in a few weeks (3/22), and it features the just-released "Can't Take It." Key often goes for in-your-face bangers, but this is more of a soulful throwback that should get your head nodding instantly.
BURNA BOY - "DANGOTE"
Nigerian Afro-fusion artist Burna Boy is gearing up to come to the US for Coachella and a few other shows, and while we wait for that, he's got a new single. "Dangote" the kind of chilled-out, good vibes song that's gonna sound great in the desert this summer.
DABABY - "BABY SITTER" (ft. OFFSET)
North Carolina rapper DaBaby had his biggest breakthrough yet with this year's "Walker Texas Ranger" single, and now he has released his first full-length project (and Interscope debut) since that single. The whole thing is solid, and this bass-heavy song featuring Offset is not surprisingly one of the highlights.
JOSH BERWANGER - "CITIES" & CASEY JAMES PRESTWOOD - "A NEW KIND OF LOVE"
Indie/emo veterans and longtime friends Josh Berwanger (most famously of The Anniversary and more recently of Radar State and a solo artist) and Casey James Prestwood (most famously of Hot Rod Circuit and also a solo artist) are releasing a split 7″ soon via Lost Broadcast Records, and we premiered a stream of both songs ahead of the release. You can also get 10% off pre-orders of the vinyl with the BrooklynVegan discount code. More info here.
