20 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

NICOLAS GODIN (AIR) – “THE BORDER”

Air’s Nicolas Godin will release his second solo album early next year but has given us something to look forward to with this sumptuous single that is dark, sleek but also warm and inviting. “I wrote this song thinking of the great architect Mies van der Rohe,” says Nicolas. “He built the Barcelona pavilion in 1929 on the hill of Montjuic in Barcelona and this building swept away all the past of the history of architecture to open a new page of human history, making the world enter into modern architecture. In short, it’s the story of someone who asks some others to follow him to the Spanish border by the sea to show them a new path towards freedom and peace…leaving everything behind.” It’s pretty much exactly what you want from one half of Air, and the transportive video, directed by Alden Volney, is pretty cool, too.

SHANA FALANA – “DARKEST LIGHT/strong>

Gothy dreampop artist Shana Falana will release new album Darkest Light on October 25. She’s just shared this heavy, grinding track that was inspired by the Handmaid’s Tale series. “That show seriously f’d me up,” says Shana. “I know the book and author of course, but seeing the actual story come to life was devastating. It’s psychotic how we are still fighting for freedom over our bodies, our careers, and our believability when we say #metoo. It ended up being the title track of this record because there is still an ember to blow on…it’s the darkest light.”

KASH DOLL, KIM PETRAS, ALMA, STEFFLON DON – “HOW IT’S DONE”

The tracklist for the upcoming Charlie’s Angels soundtrack, co-executive produced by Ariana Grande, has been revealed. In addition to the previously released Ariana/Miley Cyrus/Lana Del Rey song, it features this new one from Kash Doll, Kim Petras, Alma, and Stefflon Don; plus contributions from Nicki Minaj, Chaka Khan, and more

MORMOR – “WON’T LET YOU”

MorMor is back with a new single, and this one’s a little different for him. It finds him applying a soaring falsetto to one of the most anthemic musical backdrops he’s written yet.

ACTIVE CHILD – “SET ME FREE”

Active Child returned over the summer with “All Eyes On You,” his first single since his 2015 album Mercy. He’s now shared another new track, “Set Me Free,” which he tells Billboard is for his daughter, Nova.

FRENCH MONTANA – “TWISTED” (ft. JUICY J, LOGIC, A$AP ROCKY)

French Montana continues to nab huge guests for the singles off his upcoming Montana, and this one’s got Juicy J, Logic, and A$AP Rocky. It’s got a very Juicy J hook, which also means it’s a very fun song.

GUCCI MANE – “TOOTSIES” (ft. LIL BABY)

Following the trunk-rattling “Big Booty” with Megan Thee Stallion, Gucci Mane offers up a more sedated song with Lil Baby.

T.I. – “SABOTAGE”

The King of the South is back with a new single that finds him fast-rapping over some ominous, modern production.

PAUL HASLINGER (EX-TANGERINE DREAM) – “INTRINSIC”

“I’ve never been happy staying in one particular school of musical thought,” says ’80s era Tangerine Dream member Paul Haslinger. “The fun has been turning things on their heads, to try something you were not supposed to do.” Paul has worked in film and TV (Halt & Catch Fire, Underworld), and will release new album Exit Ghost, eight years in the making, in February. It centers around a grand piano but builds out from there. Get a taste with this lovely mood piece.

CUP (NELS CLINE & YUKA HONDA) – “BERRIES”

Wilco just released their new album Ode to Joy, but guitarist/composer Nels Cline is extra busy as he’s also got CUP, his collaborative project with Cibo Matto’s Yuka Honda. Their debut album Spinning Creature is out next month, and this third single is an expansive, funky improv jam. Despite the title, Nels insists the song doesn’t have much to do with food. “There was no intention in adding another food-referencing song to Yuka’s oeuvre, but on the surface it does seem to be about…berries! The jam-out that makes up most of the song after the initial theme is another excellent example of Yuka’s post-production magic, and—for all you nerds out there—the guitar looping stuff is a real-time performance. And for electronics nerds, the Tenorion track is all live also!”

CRO-MAGS – “FROM THE GRAVE” (ft. MOTORHEAD’S PHIL CAMPBELL)

Cro-Mags — with the lineup of Harley Flanagan, Gabby Abularach, Rocky George, and Garry Sullivan — recently released their first new music in 19 years with the three-song Don’t Give In EP, and now they’re set to release a second three-song EP of 2019, From The Grave, on December 6 via Victory Records. The title track is out now, and it features guest guitar by longtime Motorhead guitarist Phil Campbell, who Harley asked to contribute after Lemmy came to him in a dream. Read more about it here.

BLOOD INCANTATION – “INNER PATHS (TO OUTER SPACE)”

Blood Incantation have released the first single off their very anticipated sophomore album Hidden History of the Human Race, and the band says the song “is a meditative journey through the inner cosmos of the human mind. We improvised this track on psychedelics over a period of several months, allowing it to grow and evolve as it chose.” You can definitely hear the influence of psychedelics on this song… read more about it here.

DAWN RAY’D – “LIKE SMOKE INTO FOG”

Liverpool folk/black metallers Dawn Ray’ have shared another single off their upcoming album Behold Sedition Plainsong (due 10/25 via Prosthetic). “Like Smoke Into Fog” offers up a killer balance of the band’s intense black metal side and their meditative folk side, and it comes with a video of them performing in front of a castle.

SMOKE DZA – “DRUG RAP” (ft. BENNY THE BUTCHER, prod. PETE ROCK)

Smoke DZA is releasing a new EP, Statute of Limitations, on October 18 via Cinematic, and it features all three Griselda Records rappers (Benny the Butcher, Conway the Machine, and Westside Gunn), as well as Styles P. Benny is on the new single “Drug Rap,” and he and DZA sound great together over this menacing beat from the legendary Pete Rock.

THE HECKS – “MY STAR”

Chicago band The Hecks just released their second album which finds them taking their dark post-punk sound into poppier, new wave territory. The album’s title track is a real stunner, dark and romantic. From spare beginnings — just guitar and voice — but builds to much more.

MICHAEL KIWANUKA – “HERO”

“Hero” is the second single off Michael Kiwanuka’s anticipated third album KIWANUKA, and you can read more about it here.

PUSHA T – “PUPPETS”

Pusha T has released a new song that samples the Succession theme song, and you can read more about it here.

ST. VINCENT – “NEW YORK” (NINA KRAVIZ VOCAL REMIX)

Nina Kraviz is curating as new remix album of St. Vincent’s MASSEDUCTION, which features Nina herself, plus Laurel Halo, Jlin, Pearson Sound, Hieroglyphic Being, Batu, Mala, Steffi, Midland, Fred P, and more. The first taste is Nina’s eerie vocal remix of “New York.” Read more here.

JULIEN BAKER – “TOKYO” & “SUCKER PUNCH”

Julien Baker is streaming two great new songs which were originally released as a vinyl-only Sub Pop single last year, but hitting the web for the first time today. Read more here.
