20 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

FOUR TET – “4T RECORDINGS”

Four Tet’s new album Sixteen Oceans now has a release date of next Friday (March 13), and along with the announcement comes this celestial new single.

BARTEES STRANGE – “LEMONWORLD” (THE NATIONAL COVER) / “HAGS”

Washington D.C. songwriter and producer Bartees Strange is releasing an EP of covers of The National, Say Goodbye to Pretty Boy, later this month via Brassland. The latest track from that he’s shared is his take on “Lemonworld,” from 2010’s High Violet, which is seriously transformative, especially its impassioned chorus. He’s paired that with a new original track, “HAGS.”

HILARY WOODS – “THE MOUTH”

Another song from the new Hilary Woods album has arrived and this one’s the eeriest and noisiest yet.

THE RENTALS – “ABOVE THIS BROKEN WORLD”

The Rentals continue the rollout for their new album Q36 with this more ’80s-ish, beat-driven new single, which you can read much more about from Matt Sharp himself here.

EMPRESS OF – “GIVE ME ANOTHER CHANCE”

Lorely Rodriguez announced her third LP as Empress Of, I’m Your Empress Of, due out April 3 via Terrible Records, and its first single “Give Me Another Chance” is club-ready.

CONSTRICT – “NO EDEN”

LA metallic hardcore crew Constrict (whose lineup includes members of Vamachara, Forced Order, God’s Hate, Disgrace and more) have shared the title track off their upcoming No Eden EP, which drops 3/20 via Flatspot. ‘Tis a certified, grade A slapper.

REASON – “TRAPPED IN” (ft. BOOGIE & AB-SOUL)

TDE spitter Reason continues his recent string of singles with his Boogie/Ab-Soul collab, where Reason delivers his ’90s-style rhymes over brooding, modern production.

MYRKUR – “GUDERNES VILJE”

Myrkur has shared another new agey folk song from the upcoming Folkesange, and this may be the grandest-sounding single from this album yet.

HAIM – “THE STEPS”

Haim have announced their new album, Women in Music Part III, which comes out April 24 via Columbia. “The name came to me in a dream and I woke up laughing, so I told my sisters,” Danielle Haim says. Alana Haim adds, “I liked it because we are literally women in music and we always get written about that way, so it seemed cool to make it our own and control the narrative. It made me think about some of our experiences more.” “I just thought it was funny, plus the initials are WIMP3,” Este Haim says. “Wimp is a hilarious word.” New single “The Steps” is accompanied by a video directed by frequent collaborator Paul Thomas Anderson, who also directed the trio’s other most recent videos, and Danielle co-directed.

CMON – “PETER PAN”

LA duo CMON — aka Confusing Mix of Nations aka former Regal Deagle members Josh Da Costa and Jamen Whitelock — have shared a new single from their upcoming debut album which is out April 3 via Mexican Summer. “Peter Pan” sounds like early-’80s cod-reggae pop a la The Police, Men At Work or Matthew Wilder and the video for the song was directed by Geneva Jacuzzi.

CATHOLIC ACTION – “YR OLD DAD”

Scottish band Catholic Action will release new album Celebrated by Strangers at the end of March and here’s glammy new single “Yr Old Dad” which trots out a little Thin Lizzy style twin lead. “This is the sound of the wheels coming off, a sing-along catastrophe,” says guitarist Chris McCrory. “The shrugged shoulders as another funny little plan doesn’t go quite right.” Before the album’s out Catholic Action will be in the U.S. for NYC’s New Colossus and Austin’s SXSW festivals.

JADE HAIRPINS – “J TERRAPIN”

Jade Hairpins, aka Jonah and Mike from Fucked Up, will release their debut album, Harmony Avenue, on May 29 via Merge and here’s an infectious, jaunty new single. “J Terrapin” sounds like it could’ve come out of the UK in 1980, playing alongside Squeeze and Ian Dury & The Blockheads.

KEVIN MORBY – “GIFT HORSE” / “I WAS ON TIME”

If you pre-ordered the vinyl of Kevin Morby‘s 2019 album Oh My God, it came with an exclusive bonus 7″ featuring two additional songs, “Gift Horse” and “I Was on Time.” The two songs off that 7″ have now been shared on streaming services.

WOODS – “WHERE DO YOU GO WHEN YOU DREAM?”

The cheery-sounding first single from Woods’ first album in three years shows off the group’s new keyboard-heavy sonic direction, coated in piano, electric piano and mellotrons.

SONIC BOOM (OF SPACEMEN 3) – “JUST IMAGINE”

“Certain instruments have something about their sound that touches me deeply,” says former Spacemen 3 member Sonic Boom as to the sounds on his first solo album in 30 years, adding, “and I’m always trying to focus as much vibe as I can into the songs.”

TOTAL MELTDOWN – “EMBRACE IT”

Total Meltdown is a new band featuring Chris Enriquez (On the Might of Princes, Supertouch, Criteria, Shai Hulud, Spotlights, Primitive Weapons, more), and they’re streaming the very NYHC-sounding “Embrace It” from their upcoming self-titled EP. “It is all about accepting the fact that you are not in control of everything happening in your life,” vocalist Ralph Torres told No Echo.

CHARMER – “DOOM”

“Doom” is the latest single from Michigan emo band Charmer’s upcoming sophomore LP Ivy, and you can read more about it here.

JOSE JAMES – “NOBODY KNOWS MY NAME” (ft. LAURA MVULA & KRIS BOWERS)
