20 New Songs Out Today
So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…
DAYS N DAZE – “MY DARLING DOPAMINE”
Folk punks Days N Daze will release their new album Show Me the Blueprints on May 1 via Fat Wreck Chords (their first release for the label), and the horn-fueled first single “My Darling Dopamine” finds the band’s “thrashgrass” in fine form.

THE RENTALS – “ANOTHER WORLD”
Another taste of The Rentals’ upcoming Q36 is here, and this one finds them exploring moody, atmospheric electronic pop territory.

RIDE – “CLOUDS IN THE MIRROR” (PETR ALEKSANDER REMIXES)
Ride has teamed up with producer duo Pêtr Aleksänder (aka Noah & The Whale’s Tom Hobden and Two Door Cinema Club’s Eliot James) for a new, reworked version of their terrific 2019 album This Is Not A Safe Place that turns it into a more orchestral beast. It’s titled Clouds in the Mirror, and it drops May 1st via Wichita Recordings. Ride’s Andy Bell praised the new versions in a statement, saying, “…the results are inspired, often really beautiful, and at times, totally mental. [Pêtr Aleksänder] have crafted a delicate web of string and synthesizer arrangements which draws you into a whole other world than our version of the album. I love what they’ve created.” You can check out the reimagined versions of “Repetition” and “Clouds of Saint Marie” now:

NAP EYES – “MYSTERY CALLING”
Canadian band Nap Eyes (who are on tour now with Destroyer) are set to release their fourth LP Snapshot of a Beginner later this month, and their latest offering is the breezy “Mystery Calling,” which comes with a cinematic, dream-like music video from Antoine LeHaie. “We don’t know whether they’ve been there before, if they’re stuck there and passing time, if they have a purpose or they’re just chilling,” says Lahaie. “It was also important for me to keep it abstract and unresolved. Even though I like to be tongue in cheek I didn’t want to fall into something comedic.”

ANNA BURCH – “TELL ME WHAT’S TRUE”
“Tell Me What’s True,” the dreamy new single from Anna Burch’s upcoming album, takes it’s video inspiration from Martin Scorsese’s 1974 classic Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. “I had been planning a sort of minimalist performance video on a Rhodes piano but didn’t have any concrete ideas,” says Anna, who directed. “Then I stumbled across the 1974 Scorsese film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore and was so entranced by this scene of her auditioning in a cowboy bar on an electric piano, and I thought it would be a really sweet homage to recreate the scene with my song. The movie is so charming and funny, and the performances are incredible — Ellen Burstyn won the Oscar for Best Actress. It’s a bit of an outlier for Scorsese, and not one of his better known, but it might be my favorite now.”

HARKIN – “UP TO SPEED”
Harkin, aka former Sky Larkin frontwoman Katie Harkin (who’s played in Sleater-Kinney, Wild Beasts and Courtney Barnett’s band) will release her solo debut on April 24, This is the most appealing single yet, with Katie’s strong voice cutting through the guitar-and-keyboard haze.

LOCAL H – “HOLD THAT THOUGHT”
Local H have shared another single off their upcoming Steve Albini-recorded album LIFERS, and it proves these guys are still very capable of churning out alt-rock ragers.

EYE FLYS – “GUILLOTINE”
Eye Flys — the band of Full of Hell guitarist Spencer Hazard, Backslider bassist Jake Smith (on guitar and vocals), former Backslider drummer Patrick Forrest, and Triac’s Kevin Bernsten on bass — will release their debut full-length album Tub of Lard next week (3/20) via Thrill Jockey, and here’s another song from it: the sludgy, pissed-off “Guillotine.”

ANDERSON. PAAK & JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE – “DON’T SLACK”
So far this year, Justin Timberlake has released new songs with SZA and Meek Mill, and now he’s got one with another great, comparatively newer artist: Anderson .Paak. Like the SZA song, it’ll appear in Trolls World Tour (which both JT and Paak voice characters in), and this one sounds a bit like early Janelle Monae.

AUROCH – “COFFIN NAILS”
Vancouver’s Auroch are releasing their new mini album Stolen Angelic Tongues on April 24 via 20 Buck Spin, and first single “Coffin Nails” is a vicious dose of blackened death metal.

JOHANNA WARREN – “PART OF IT”
Portland, OR folk singer Johanna Warren’s fifth album, Chaotic Good, is due out May 1, and she’s shared the second single off of it, the sharply sung “Part of It.”

BLACKLISTED – “EYE FOR AN EYE” (2005)
Hardcore boundary-pushers Blacklisted are releasing the “new” EP Eye For An Eye on May 1 via Deathwish, featuring two songs from their 2005 split 7″ with First Blood, Dead Mean’s Hands III. The newly-issued title track is streaming now.

FENNE LILY – “HYPOCHONDRIAC”
Bristol singer/songwriter and Aldous Harding collaborator Fenne Lily signed to Dead Oceans and you can read more about her first single for the label here.

SHARON VAN ETTEN – “STARING AT A MOUNTAIN”
Sharon Van Etten stars in the new drama Never Rarely Sometimes Always, and she also recorded this new song for the soundtrack. Read more about it here.

THAO & THE GET DOWN STAY DOWN – “TEMPLE”
This is both the title track and first single to Thao’s upcoming fifth album.

DERADOORIAN – “SATURNINE NIGHT”
Angel Deradoorian says she was inspired by Can and vocalist Damo Suzuki for her first album for ANTI- and you can definitely hear that on this first single.

YAEJI – “WAKING UP DOWN”
Yaeji will release a new full-length mixtape, WHAT WE DREW 우리가 그려왔던, on April 2 via XL. Here’s the first single and she designed the characters in the video herself.

GHOST WORK (SEAWEED, etc) – “FAKE BLOOD”
Aaron Stauffer, frontman of the great Tacoma, WA indie rock band Seaweed, is now fronting the band Ghost Work, whose impressive lineup also includes Snapcase bassist Dustin Perry, former/classic era Milemarker guitarist Sean Husick, and former/classic era Minus the Bear drummer Erin Tate. “Fake Blood” is the first single off their upcoming debut album, and you can read more about it here.

SHINER – “LIFE AS A MANNEQUIN”
Kansas City atmospheric post-hardcore vets Shiner are releasing their first album in 19 years in May, and you can read more about first single “Life As A Mannequin” here.
