Taking one of her few moments to stand still at centerstage as her 10 fellow band-members sonically introduced themselves, Welch's hands orchestrated their sound. Long, thin fingers climbed the space around her, and she fell into "What the Water Gave Me," a track from the 2011 release "Ceremonials."
Swiftly unleashing herself from the stillness, Welch burned a path from stage-left to stage-right, bewitching the front rows with a tambourine held high.
"Hello Voodoo Festival," she called. "We are Florence and the Machine. Thank you so much for having us. Now, we would have liked to have a choir with us, but it turned out they were all ghosts and went back home. So, I was wondering if you'd be our choir this evening? Can we sing this one together?" - [Nola.com]
Heavy rain and wind wreaked havoc on New Orleans' Voodoo Fest on Halloween Weekend, but Friday's kickoff day (10/30) went off fine, with a headlining set from Florence + the Machine where any dramatic weather system seemed part of her theatrical performance. The holiday weekend meant lots of folks were dressed up -- both on stage and off -- and acts like Metric and Florence got into the Halloween spirit. Some, like Modest Mouse, were business as usual, attire-wise. Other performers Friday included Joey Bada$$, Jason Isbell, My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way, and more.
Gerard also stopped by the Toyota Music Den, which BrooklynVegan helped curate along with SPIN and Stereogum, as did The Joy Formidable and Wax Motif.
We'll have pictures from Day 2 of Voodoo fest up soon. (Sunday was rained out.) More pics from Friday, below...
