2020 Oscars: Parasite wins Best Picture ++ Janelle Monae, Eminem & more
Tonight was the 2020 Oscars and as awards ceremonies go, this one moved pretty well and was full of surprises. First and foremost: Bong Joon Ho's Parasite won Best Picture, beating 1917 which was considered all but a lock. Bong Joon Ho also won Best Director, and Parasite also took home Best International Feature Film and Best Screenplay. During his speech for Best Director, Bong said "If the Academy allows, I would like to get a Texas chainsaw" to chop up the award among all the nominees. "I am ready to drink tonight."
Joaquin Phoenix won Best Actor for Joker and Renee Zellweger won for Judy.
Janelle Monae opened the night, coming out to sing "Won't You Be My Neighbor" and then bursting into a big production number with dancers representing Joker, Midsommar, Dolomite is My Name and more, plus Billy Porter came out to sing Elton John's "I'm Still Standing." You can watch that below.
That was not the only musical surprise in store for the night. At the end of a "Memorable Songs in Film" montage, Eminem came out to perform his Best Song-winning "Lose Yourself" from 8 Mile.
Billie Eilish, with her brother Finneas O'Connell, covered The Beatles' "Yesterday" from the In Memoriam segment.
Other musical performances included this year's Best Song nominees: Idina Menzel performing "Into the Unknown" from Frozen II alongside made of the dubbed version singers from around the world, plus Chrissy Metz ("I'm Standing With You" from Breakthrough), Randy Newman ("I Can't Let You Throw Yourself Away" from Toy Story 4), Cynthia Erivo ("Stand Up" from Harriet), and the Best Song winner, Elton John (“[I’m Gonna] Love Me Again” from Rocketman).
Hildur Guðnadóttir won Best Original Score for Joker.
Best Supporting Actor went to Brad Pitt in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and you can watch his speech below. Best Supporting Actress went to favorite Laura Dern for Marriage Story.
Other winners: Taika Waititi won Best Adapted Screenplay for Jojo Rabbit.
Best Documentary went to American Factory which is the first film produced by Barack Obama and Michelle Obama's production company, Higher Ground Productions (and you can watch on Netflix now).
There was no host this year, but Steve Martin and Chris Rock came out to trade off opening monologue jokes. Questlove is DJ for the night. You can watch their monologue below.
Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig made a good case for making them hosts next year with their presentation of the Best Production Design and Best Costume Design awards (which went to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Little Women, respectively). Also funny: Julia Louis Dreyfus and Will Ferrell giving out the Cinematography award (which deservedly went to Roger Deakins for 1917); and James Corden and Rebel Wilson as cats from Cats talking about the importance of good visual effects., You can watch those below too.
