2021 SXSW Film Fest lineup: Tom Petty, Charli XCX, Poly Styrene, more

The 2021 virtual SXSW Film Festival is coming up, running March 16-20 and they’ve just announced the lineup of programming. They’ve put together a pretty robust slate of films, with 75 features including 57 World Premieres, 53 films from first-time filmmakers, plus nearly 100 short films, television series premieres, Q&As, panel discussions and more. Online attendees will be able to watch this year’s slate via a dedicated streaming app that will be available via Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, Android TV and Samsung TV, in addition to your computer or tablet. Passes are on sale now.

As usual, there are lots of music-related films, including all three of this years’ Headliner presentations.

The 2021 Opening Night film this year is Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil, a documentary “exploring every aspect that led to Lovato’s nearly fatal overdose in 2018, and her awakenings in the aftermath.”

This year’s Centerpiece screening is Tom Petty, Somewhere You Feel Free, director Mary Wharton’s documentary drawn from a newly discovered archive of 16mm film of Tom Petty working on his 1994 record Wildflowers (which got it’s long-overdue expanded reissue last year).

The Closing Night film is Charli XCX documentary Alone Together: “Charli XCX, a popstar in quarantine, embarks on a whirlwind creative and romantic journey while making an album in 40 days that unites a community around the world.”

  • Delia Derbyshire – the Myths and the Legendary Tapes : “A portrait of the character and legacy of electronic sound pioneer Delia Derbyshire, who realised the Dr Who Theme tune in 1963 and explores the idea that this extraordinary composer lived outside of time and space as other people experience it.” (International Premiere)
