21 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

JIM JAMES – “OVER AND OVER” FT. ANGEL OLSEN

“Over and Over” was first featured on My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James’ album Uniform Distortion, and then it was also on his acoustic record Uniform Clarity. He’s now offered up a new version of it as a duet with Angel Olsen. That is an “Amazon Original” and you need to be an Amazon Music subscriber to hear the whole thing but there’s a snippet below. Also below: Jim performing the song on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series.

BEIRUT – “CORFU”

It’s been less than a week since Zach Condon announced his new Beirut album, Gallipoli, and he’s already shared a second track from it. “Corfu” is a jazzy, exotic, almost loungy instrumental that sounds like the cover art looks.

RAPSODY & J COLE – “SOJOURNER”

Jamla Records is releasing the Jamla Is the Squad II compilation on November 9, and they’ve shared a new song from it, a collaboration from Jamla artist Rapsody (whose Laila’s Wisdom was one of our favorite albums of 2017) and J Cole (who released KOD this year). Over a rich-sounding, laid-back beat, Cole starts the song off in fine form, and then Rapsody comes in to steal the show with a delivery that’s as breathtaking as ever.

LAURA JANE GRACE & THE DEVOURING MOTHERS – “REALITY BITES”

Against Me! frontwoman Laura Jane Grace is releasing her first album as Laura Jane Grace & The Devouring Mothers, Brought to Rot, on November 9, and she’s following its first two singles she’s sharing a third, “Reality Bites.” “Want to send this one out to all my Transgender, non-binary, intersex and other non gender conforming, friends, family & community,” Laura writes. “Love you all. And a great big FUCK YOU to the small minded hateful world we’re all dealing with daily.”

SMINO – “L.M.F.”

St. Louis rapper Smino released his great debut album blkswn last year, and while he hasn’t given any real word on a follow-up yet, he did just drop his second single of 2018 (following May’s “New Coupe, Who Dis?” featuring Mick Jenkins, who released a killer new album today). The song is called “L.M.F.,” which stands for “Lion Mufasa” and the song features more than a few Lion King references. Smino sounds great as ever over dizzying production courtesy of Sango, and this is making us very excited to hear more new Smino.

UPDATE (10/29): It looks like we won’t have to wait very long! Smino just shared a teaser video with a snippet of a new song which also reveals his new album is called Smino Noir and out next week:

TAKEOFF (of MIGOS) – “LAST MEMORY”

Just a couple weeks after Quavo’s solo album came out, another of the Migos has shared some solo material. Takeoff has been teasing a new solo LP called The Last Rocket, and “Last Memory” is presumably from that project. Check out the very Migos-sounding song and watch its very expensive-looking video:

KIRK KNIGHT – “DOWNTIME”

Pro Era’s Kirk Knight has been talking about his new album IIWII (aka “It Is What It Is”), and now he revealed the artwork, tracklist, and November 16 release date (more info and pre-orders here), and shared second single “Downtime.” While lead single “Run It Back (Freestyle)” found Kirk in an aggressive mode, this is a chiller, more melodic song that shows off a much different side of him. He’s good at this kind of thing too, and he still finds time to fit in skillful, fast-paced bars.

B.E.D. (BAXTER DURY, ETIENNE DE CRECY, DELILAH HOLLIDAY) – “CENTIPEDES”

Standout cut from Baxter Dury’s collaborative album with French Touch maestro Etienne de Crecy and Skinny Girl Diet singer Delilah Holliday. It’s funky, and rich in strange lyrical imagery (“I want you to be full of Love Centipedes”). The only thing bad about it is, at a minute and a half, it’s over too soon.

TRENTEMØLLER – “TRANSFORMER MAN” (NEIL YOUNG COVER)

Anders Trentemøller is releasing a new mix on November 23 titled Harbour Boat Trips Vol. 02 Copenhagen that features Slowdive, The Raveonettes, A Place to Bury Strangers and more. It’s also got his cover of Neil Young’s “Transformer Man,” here transformed into an icy synthpop number.

THE FAINT – “CHAMELEON NIGHTS”

Omaha, NE’s gothy synthpunks The Faint are back with their first new single in two years. “Chameleon Nights,” which is out now via Saddle Creek, is both distinctly modern and unmistakably The Faint.

NATALIE PRASS – “NO FUTURE IN OUR FRONTMAN” (MATTHEW E. WHITE COVER)

Matthew E. White recently launched a project called No Future In Our Frontman, where his song of the same name, about Donald Trump, will be covered by multiple different artists, with proceeds going to voter awareness charities. The first cover version, by Natalie Prass, came out today.

SAY ANYTHING – “IT’S A PROCESS”

Say Anything’s upcoming album OLIVER APPROPRIATE is being touted as possibly the band’s final album and also a return to the early days, and so far all the singles have lived up to the latter promise. The new “It’s A Process” is no different — this sounds like the Say Anything you know and love.

MATT OX – “JETLAG” (ft. CHIEF KEEF)

Fourteen-year-old rapper Matt Ox is having a busy week or so. After appearing on a new Valee song last Friday, he’s now got his own new song out featuring Chief Keef.

MISERABLE – “LOVERBOY / DOG DAYS” (EP STREAMS)

King Woman’s Kristina Esfandiari also records and performs as Miserable. She’s following her 2016 album Uncontrollable with two EPs: Loverboy and a reissue of Dog Days. She lost the original recording of Loverboy in a fire and had to re-record it, a painful process. As she told Bust, “I was beyond devastated. I sang about some really personal experiences and put my all into the vocals which was hard to go back and replicate because I felt that I released that energy the first time around. That was the hardest part for me.”

THE LIVING HOUR – “BOTTOM STEP”

Canadian band The Living Hour have signed to Kanine Records who will release their new album on March 9. While that’s a good ways off, you can check out track from the LP — the dreamy “Bottom Step” — right now.

KLAUS JOHANN GROBE – “ZU SPÄT”

One of the many cool, weird disco songs from Swiss duo Klaus Johann Grobe’s just-released fourth album. Where KJG were once very krautrock, this is closer to Kool & the Gang than Kraftwerk. In a Klaus Johann Grobe kind of way. More here.

SRSQ – “PERMISSION”

Kennedy Ashlyn began making music as SRSQ after losing her closest friend and Them Are Us Too collaborator Cash Askew in 2016’s Oakland Ghost Ship fire. Her debut album for the project, Unreality, is out today via Dias Records, as is a new video for album track “Permission,” which really showcases the eerie beauty of Kennedy’s voice.

AFI – “GET DARK”

Goth punk vets AFI shared the first single off their upcoming The Missing Men EP, which we wrote more about here.

GERARD WAY – “BABY YOU’RE A HAUNTED HOUSE”

Just in time for Halloween, former My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way shared a thematically appropriate new song and video, which we wrote more about here.

TINY HAZARD – “I’M NOT SCARED”

“I’m Not Scared” is the first single off Tiny Hazard’s just-announced EP, which we wrote more about here.

BOYGENIUS – BOYGENIUS (EP STREAM)

Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus gave a surprise early digital release to their collaborative boygenius EP, which we wrote more about here.
