22 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

BUDDY – “HOLLYWOOD” (ft. KENT JAMZ)

Compton rapper Buddy is planning to follow his 2018 debut album Harlan & Alondra with a new album in spring 2020, and while most details on that are still TBA, today he released a very promising new single “Hollywood.” Equipped with a hook that pays homage to Cam’ron’s “Oh Boy,” the song is an addictive dose of neo-soul-tinged rap.

DVSN – “NO CRYIN” (ft. FUTURE)

OVO R&B duo dvsn (aka singer Daniel Daley and frequent Drake producer Nineteen85) and Future have put their heads together for a double dose of melancholic star power on new single “No Cryin.”

MARIA MCKEE – “EFFIGY OF SALT”

Former Lone Justice singer/songwriter Maria McKee is back with La Vita Nuova, her first solo album in 13 years, on March 13 via Fire Records. “The album became sort of an elegy to desire, almost a fond farewell,” says Maria who came out as queer since that last album and also spent time re-engaging with her first love, acting. “Much of queer liberation is finding a way to live beyond hetero ruminative models we’re conditioned to live with. This album is, in a way, an exorcism, a sort of purging of those ideas and expectations.” The first single is the sweeping “Effigy of Salt.”

AMANDA PALMER, SARAH-LOUISE YOUNG, MAXIM MELTON – “THE FRENCH BREXIT SONG”

Amanda Palmer released her first solo album in seven years, There Will Be No Intermission, back in March, but she’s continued to share songs since, and this is the latest one. About the track, Amanda writes on Patreon, “at the London patron pub gig at the end of August, I saw my dear friend Maxim play this very hilarious song that was written by HIS cabaret friend Sarah-Louise (who wasn’t there). I said “we should record that and make a ridiculous video!!” Because Patreon, we could, and we did.” Proceeds from the first month of digital downloads go to Open Piano for Refugees.

HOLODRUM (EX-HOOKWORMS) – “LOW LIGHT”

Holodrum is a new UK band featuring former Hookworms member Matthew Benn, and former/current members of Cowtown, Drahla, Mucky Sailor, Nope, VIDE0 & Xam Duo. The group released “No Dither” in September and have now followed it up with “Low Light.” Both are dark, danceable and psychedelic, with a lot of promise in those grooves. Listen to both of those below and Holodrum will make their live debut on Saturday in Manchester.

TOY – “DOWN ON THE STREET” (STOOGES COVER)

UK psych band TOY are releasing a covers album, Songs of Consuption, in two weeks and here’s the opening cut, a version of The Stooges “Down on the Street” that’s closer to Suicide than Iggy Pop but still with heaps of attitude.

CHARLY BLISS – SUPERMOON (EP STREAM)

Charly Bliss released their sophomore album Young Enough earlier this year, and they’ve collected five songs from the sessions that birthed it into a new EP, Supermoon. Frontwoman Eva Hendricks told Rolling Stone, “this EP serves as a bridge, spanning the distance between Guppy and Young Enough. It’s easy to hear how our sound was starting to change. The more we kept writing, the further we went. We chose songs for Young Enough that learned a little deeper into that, but it’s cool to hear how Young Enough isn’t a record that came out of thin air.”

FORESEEN – “INFILTRATOR”

Finland’s Foreseen have made a name for themselves as one of the better crossover thrash revival bands around, and new single “Infiltrator” proves they have not lost their knack for mind-melting rippers one bit. It’s the first taste of the band’s new 7″ that comes out on November 15 with the b-side “Wide Awake Nightmare.”

WESTSIDE GUNN – “KOOL G” (ft. BENNY THE BUTCHER & CONWAY THE MACHINE)

Another posse cut from the Griselda Records crew has arrived (co-produced by in-house producer Daringer and frequent collaborator The Alchemist), and it delivers exactly what you want from these guys: tough, ’90s New York style bars over a hypnotic, hazy beat.

HAIM – “NOW I’M IN IT”

Haim released their first single since 2017’s Something To Tell You, “Summer Girl,” back in July, and now they are following it with “Now I’m In It” and its accompanying video, directed by regular collaborator Paul Thomas Anderson. About the song, Danielle Haim says, “‘Now I’m In It’ is about going through it. A depression. Not leaving the house type of shit. For my sisters and I, there have been times in our lives where we have felt like we are stuck in a dark hole. This track speaks to that emotion. The track is chaotic- like my mind when I’m spiraling. Fast-talking to myself- words jumbled up. Heartbeat racing. These times are hard to forget and even harder to work through. After being constantly on the go the past couple years, I didn’t wanna stop and deal with some shit. Also, every day my sisters and I feel so fucking lucky that we get to do this for a living!!! It seemed like stopping and dealing with these emotions would be letting everyone down. But every time I’ve been depressed- it takes me accepting that I need help, to start to get out of it. It’s gotten a little easier as i have gotten older to recognize the symptoms and remind myself that when this happens, I need to seek help. (shout out to my therapist!!) Anyway, we all know it’s important to talk about this stuff. This one poured out of us. Take care of yourself. Be nice to yourself. And thank the ones around you that help u everyday. Hope this helps anyone who is in it right now.”

CHARLES RUMBACK & RYLEY WALKER – “MENEBHI”

Charles Rumback and Ryley Walker’s new collaborative album Little Common Twist is out Nov. 8 via Thrill Jockey. “Menebhi” is a spectral instrumental, dark and ambient and perhaps not quite what you expect from either musician.

FAILED FLOWERS (ANNA BURCH AND FRED THOMAS) – “BROKEN SCREEN”

Failed Flowers are led by Anna Burch and Fred Thomas (Saturday Looks Good to Me) and have been making music for five years now, inspired by the jangly indiepop of the C-86 scene. They’ve got a new 7″ due out this Friday via Slumberland (part of the label’s 30th anniversary singles series) and you can stream both side of that here:

HANNAH DIAMOND – “INVISIBLE”

PC Music pop singer Hannah Diamond released “Part of Me” in September, and now she’s announced her debut album, Reflections, which is due out on November 22. She’s also shared a new single, which pairs vocals autotuned into androidian rigidity with sparkling production.

EYELIDS – “THE MINUTES”

Portland’s Eyelids, the group that features The Decemberists‘ John Moen, and former Guided by Voices member Chris Slusarenko, will release new album The Accidental Falls on Valentine’s Day, 2020. The album was produced by R.E.M.’s Peter Buck, who knows what to do with the band’s jangly indie rock style, and has them collaborating with poet Larry Beckett (who collaborated with Tim Buckley). “It was Larry’s trust in us that really caused us to think we should do it,” Moen says. “When someone like that is into your work to the degree they want to collaborate, it definitely feeds your confidence.” Check out the album’s first single, “The Minutes.”

PINEGROVE – “PHASE”

Pinegrove have announced their first album for Rough Trade, Marigold, which is due Januray 17. It features recent single “Moment” and the alt-country-leaning new single “Phase.”

THE ANGELUS – “THE YOUNG BIRDS” / “THE WEEPING SONG” (NICK CAVE COVER)

Even if you aren’t familiar with The Angelus by name, you may recognize Emil Rapstine as one of the core guest vocalists on Dead To A Dying World’s great new album Elegy and a member of their touring band. They’ve now got a new single, “The Young Birds,” which is a very appealing dose of dark psychedelic rock, and it comes back with a well-executed Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds cover.

NERO DI MARTE – “SISYPHOS”

Italian metal band Nero Di Marte are releasing their first album in six years, Immoto, on January 24 via Season of Mist, and the first single is the opening track “Sisyphos,” which treks through all kinds of different metal (post-, prog, black, etc) in its 11-and-a-half minute running time.

BOB NANNA – “DO YOU WANT TO BUY A GUITAR?”

Braid’s Bob Nanna is releasing a new acoustic solo album in 2020, and the first taste is “Do You Want To Buy A Guitar?”, which you can read more about here.

COCOROSIE – “SMASH MY HEAD”

CocoRosie announced a new album and shared new single “Smash My Head,” and you can read more about it here.

DISHEVELED CUSS (mem TERA MELOS) – “WANNA BE MY FRIEND”

Disheveled Cuss is the new project led by Nick Reinhart, singer/guitarist of math rock greats Tera Melos, and it’s a much more relaxed project than the chaotic band he’s best known for. His debut single is “Wanna Be My Friend,” which is a very appealing dose of shoegazy indie rock, and you can read more about the project here.

FYRHTU – “RITUAL”

Oakland’s Fyrhtu is a new duo from the very prolific Leila Abdul-Rauf (a solo artist and a member of Vastum, Hammers of Misfortune, Amber Asylum, Cardinal Wrym, and more) and Nathan A. Verrill (also of Cardinal Wrym), and you can read more about their new single “Ritual” here.
